Show HN: Fantasymath.com – math based, matchup specific fantasy football advicehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15212437Been working on this all offseason and wanted to post here with the kickoff of the NFL season.www.fantasymath.comIn FF, the goal is to pick a lineup of players that outscore your opponent's lineup. In real life, these players are often the same team/playing each other, and so their performance is correlated (e.g. a QB throwing to a WR). The fantasymath.com model takes these correlations into account in order to give you a slight edge when setting your lineup (apart from that, the rankings are basically the "fantasy consensus" or wisdom of crowds, set to distributions).Do everything on this myself. I'm a modeling guy by trade, and had to learn all the back and frontend stuff myself. The frontend is React + Redux. Used the React framework Grommet, which I really like. The backend is in Flask and Google App engine. Other really helpful things were Auth0 and Stripe.Audience is hardcore Fantasy Footballer's who are mostly interested in whatever edge they can get, so charge $40. Have a decentSep 10, 2017 2:54 PM

Ask HN: Do you find writing plumbing code for SaaS painful?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12951867Used to run a few different SaaS but the plumbing code relating to integrating Stripe, user authentication, billing management for customer all quickly adds up to non-product related coding which now adds friction to your testing & deployment lifecycle.I don't know, has this been the case for any of you out there?Would there be value in being able to quickly deploy different SaaS ideas by bootstrapping it with a SaaS website hosted on the cloud that will be completely taken off your hands? All you'd have to do is point to your core product running on your own deployment and interact with potentially a service that will give you drop in Access Control?I know security is paramount here but also feel like there should be minimal friction in retrofitting SaaS functionality to your web app. Stripe removes the need to store any of your customer's sensitive data on my end which would require PCI compliance. It's the classic build vs buy, and I'm curious to know if anything hits home for those wNov 14, 2016 6:09 PM

Does a new coal-fired power plant make sense in 2016?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12357550Lamu, where a Chinese-led coal-fired power plant is about to be built, is a stupendously beautiful archipelago of Islands off the South Eastern coast of Kenya.Indeed, Obama wrote of his visit with Michelle to the area in his first ever trip to Kenya before they got engaged in the early 90s.The main island hosts a UNESCO world heritage site, a 14th century town built up due to the confluence of African, Arab and European (as well as some Chinese, Indian) traders.Work on the coal-fired plant is likely to begin in 2017 but its construction is starting to face strong opposition from a minority.Main concerns are environmental destruction due to thermal effluent into the ocean, as well as air pollution.1400 Chinese workers (nearly half the labor required) will be brought in to work on the plant. While Kenya desperately needs the power, and is carrying out other major clean energy projects (e.g the largest wind power plant in Africa, which Google has invested in), coal sounds really concerningAug 25, 2016 8:12 AM

World’s Fastest Super Computer Entirely Made in Chinahttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11984637China has built the world’s fastest supercomputer using locally made microchips, a survey said Monday, the first time the country has taken the top spot without using US technology. The Sunway TaihuLight machine is twice as fast as the previous number one, which was built in China with chips from US firm Intel, the Top500 survey of supercomputers said on its website www.top500.org.China also has more top-ranked supercomputers than the US for the first time since the survey began, with 167 compared to 165.Located at China’s national supercomputer centre in the eastern city of Wuxi, the Sunway TaihuLight will be used for climate modelling and life science research. Its performance ends “speculation that China would have to rely on Western technology to compete effectively in the upper echelons of supercomputing,” the survey’s website said. The supercomputers on the Top500 list, which is produced twice a year, are rated based on speed in a benchmark test by experts from Germany and the US.OfJun 27, 2016 7:24 AM

Ask HN: Staying Happyhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10104051I really remember it, back to the time when i was in college, i have so much tasks. I needed to attend campus club. Lots of assignment. But the fact i was happy still surprises me.It has been ~1.5 years since i graduated from my college and got to work as a software engineer. I got decent job with decent salary (at least pretty good in my area). The workplace itself considered as a "fun" environment: sleeping pod, ping pong table, coffee machine and no cubicles. Also, workload is lighter than class assignments. But it seems like i am not happy anymore -- i don't know why. (Btw, yes, i do love coding. I do some of my pet projects in weekend)I tried to do so much things (to try) making myself happier: Cycling around the city, playing some game with friends; but none of them seems to be working. After all, i want to create happiness, not to "do something" or "buy something" to make myself happy. I know happiness is intrinsic and subjective. Two persons doing a same thing may perceive that Aug 22, 2015 10:41 PM

Patriot Act Section Goes Way Too Farhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9628531Via: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/opinion/letters/2015/05/29/letter-patriotact-sunset-senate-spying/28185561/"Section 215 of the Patriot Act is scheduled to sunset on Monday. This law was secretly interpreted to allow the mass surveillance of who you talk to on the phone. Such information can be deeply intimate and private: Consider, for instance, what you could infer from a record of numerous calls to a local oncology center and pharmacies. Section 215 is a pointless, expensive intrusion into the private life of every American. On May 22, the Senate voted against extending Section 215. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has indicated he will bring it up again for a lastminute vote on Sunday. I write to encourage local readers to ask their senators, especially McConnell and Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, not to extend these surveillance provisions because they run counter to the spirit and letter of the Constitution.
