Ask HN: Let's build an HN uBlacklist to improve our Google search results?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29794372For the unaware, uBlacklist [0] is a browser extension that lets you blacklist sites from the google search results page. It lets you blacklist sites right from the results page, by regex, or by linking lists hosted somewhere. The low quality of results has been a problem from a while now and has become worse lately thanks to all those StackOverflow and Github clones. So I was wondering if we could come together and contribute to a single blacklist hosted somewhere and then import it into each of our browsers. Who knows? We might end up improving the quality of the results we all get.Lists to get rid of the StackOverflow and Github clones already exist. [1]I would love to contribute to a project like this, but won't be able to be a maintainer due to time constraints. Would greatly appreciate it if someone could host this. A simple txt file on github would do.What do you say, HN?[0]: https://github.com/iorate/ublacklist [1]: https://github.com/rjaus/awesome-ublacklist

Pushing People into IThttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29348049This comment was inspired by a submission that has been flagged. While the context of the article was about women, this is a generalized problem. Boys are just as much the victims of parent ambition as girls are. That said, here is my original comment:One thing I do not understand regarding regarding college diplomas overproduction is the push for more women in IT. We all know over here that IT is not the sunshine and flowers industry it sometimes looks like from outside. There's plenty of psychical and mental health hazards. For the first time in 20 years I now have more women colleagues than man. Of course we should accept anybody who is passionate about IT into the field, but pushing people into it? In my team right now there's an junior engineer girl who is absolutely WOW, I have only seen one more junior so bright and passionate in my career. But there's also two junior engineer girls, the project owner and scrum master - both women - who are just miserable! They have no love for t

Launch HN: Payflow (YC S21) – Allow workers to access their wages instantlyhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27916764Hi HN, we are Benoît and Avi, co-founders at Payflow (https://www.payflow.es/). We’re making a better app for workers to instantly access their earned wages. We launched a year ago in Spain (where we’re based!). Anyone in Spain can try our product. Otherwise, here’s a demo video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSDlGhoFNyM.75% of employees in Spain and Latam live paycheck to paycheck and many have no savings. They often run out of cash before payday, especially if they have an unexpected expense. This is an issue for employers too, because high employee turnover amongst low-income employees is costly. Most employee perks (e.g. health insurance, flexible benefits, snacks in the office), which are so familiar to HN, are usually reserved to white-collar workers in Latam. Said employee perks are too expensive for blue-collar employers, and more importantly are not what employees who are struggling with financial instability actually need.Given the inequality (and wealth) of our societies,

Ask HN: Would an expert-only version of StackOverflow be a good idea?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27894449Every time I want to contribute to StackOverflow, I get put off by and demotivated by the jarringly bad quality of the majority of new questions; see e.g. the list of new questions tagged with [php] [1]. Now this has been discussed broadly, and somehow everyone seems to have their own opinion about SO's problems.I recently read a short rant [2] about it on Meta, and now I wonder:Could an expert-only, high quality SO alternative work? Restricted access is hard to enforce, but some basic RegEx captcha and adjusted rules and moderation might help a lot. Would you use it?[1] https://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/php [2] https://meta.stackoverflow.com/a/371375

Ask HN: What could a single company do with 1000 developers hired in a year?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27591884In a recent StackOverflow podcast[1] a guest mentions a conversation with a recruiter who is trying to find 1000 Ruby developers in 2021 for a single client. It was not really discussed, but if anyone has any insight I am very curious:1. What kind of company/project can benefit from 1000 developers being added to it?2. What kind of onboarding process could handle 1000 new developers in a year?3. Are there really a thousand Ruby developers in the world who are likely to change jobs in 2021?[1]: http://stackoverflow.blog/2021/05/14/podcast-338-why-is-it-so-hard-to-find-ruby-developers/
