Ask HN: Combining Healthcare and Software Engineering into a Careerhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49390762I'm a former software engineer (self-taught) who is currently in school studying Kinesiology. I plan on going to graduate school for Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy. Before starting school, I gained a few years of experience working with disabled children. I decided to pursue OT/PT because I very much enjoy working with disabled populations, but want more autonomy to actually make decisions that impact their well being.Despite all of this (and a rocky resume), I still feel like programming is a part of me and is something I find enjoyable as a discipline.Has anyone successfully made a career combining healthcare and software engineering? How did you do it?Aug 21, 2026 4:48 PM

Show HN: Proliferate- open-source, self-hostable Codex for any coding agenthttps://github.com/proliferate-ai/proliferateHi HN- I'm Pablo, the founder of Proliferate (YC S25)!Proliferate (https://github.com/proliferate-ai/proliferate) is an open-source, self-hostable AI IDE that lets you work and automate tasks with Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Cursor, and Grok in one place. Here's a quick 2m demo of how we use Proliferate to build Proliferate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGNX0oaWmBYI started building Proliferate after my team onboarded to OpenAI Codex. Within days, we were using it for everything: using computer use instead of navigating websites ourselves, having Codex coordinate other agents, and setting up automations for recurring work. We really never needed to leave the desktop app to get work done.If my team’s experience is anything close to representative, a Codex-like app (a horizontal agent with a beautiful UI) is the main interface every company is going to use to get work done. That is perfectly in line with OpenAI’s mission to make Codex the everything app (see: https://news.ycombinatorAug 21, 2026 4:47 PM

Show HN: Steganeur – Hide secret messages in LLM-generated text (Rust)https://github.com/marcsnid/steganeurHi HN! I made a project that I found really fun and I'm proud of the idea and implementation. This first came up when speaking to a friend, we were talking around how to do steganography in natural text, and realized an LLM's token choices are a natural channel.Steganeur accomplishes this by encoding a secret message into the token choices of a language model, producing cover text that reads like a normal sentence. A recipient recovers the message using only the cover text and the model. With the rejection method, the output is statistically identical to normal generation, not just something that looks similar. The interesting problem I hit: steganeur reads the model's logprobs directly, and three of the four methods need them to come out exactly the same on encode and decode. On GPU reductions are non-deterministic, so the logprobs drift between runs, which is enough to corrupt the bits. Only one method (block) survives on GPU, because it bins tokens by their id rather than by probabilAug 21, 2026 4:33 PM

Show HN: eInk Optimized Manga with Kindle Comic Converter (+Kobo/KOreader)https://github.com/ciromattia/kccKindle Comic Converter optimizes black & white (or color) comics and manga for E-ink ereaders like Kindle, Kobo, ReMarkable, and more. Pages display in fullscreen without margins, with proper fixed layout support. KCC runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.KCC's main goal is maximum image quality at significantly smaller file size. For example, KCC1) can compress a 600 MB manga volume from Humble Bundle to 100 MB. This is mostly accomplished by downscaling to the native resolution of your specific device. This can also improve battery life, page turn speed, and general performance on underpowered ereaders with small memory and storage capacities.2) fixes black levels to avoid gray/faded blacks found in many Kindle Store manga3) fixes the rainbow effect on Kaleido 3 color eink without blur using the Discrete Fourier Transform (community PR)It can also semi-automatically join pre-split 2 page spreads and has several KOreader optimizations as well.Aug 21, 2026 4:20 PM

Show HN: Caspian – Talk to Human Tool for AI Agentshttps://github.com/TryCaspian/caspian-sdkSup HN! Dipanshu and Rushant here from Caspian. One is a functional programmer and the other has been deploying AI employees. Together we realized how agents have communication bottleneck.Given the coming agentic economy, we had a thought experiment on what can be the key infrastructure for agents as they get better. Our inspiration for solving for communications infra came from our own time spent just setting up comms while we were deploying open claw for companies plus we noticed about 15%+ of issues in Openclaw and Hermes were that of comms. So we abstracted the headache of reliable communication web-hooks, handling of queues, provision and identity management behind an single SDK integration / tool call. Think of it like rather than rolling your own auth, you can use better auth sdk, same thesis here.Technically, we designed the SDK from the ground up as a DSL for communications (heavy inspiration from functional programming) and then add on our own run time environment which auto pAug 21, 2026 4:17 PM

Show HN: Telex Page – Turn secrets into AES 256 encrypted PDFs, locallyhttps://telexpage.com/Hey! Every time I had to send something confidential, like a password, secret, .env, etc, I ended up using some openssl enchantment. It worked, but it was annoying for the team and impossible for my family.PDF docs already support strong AES 256 encryption and open pretty much everywhere. The annoying part was creating a doc and then jumping into a cli just to encrypt it.So I made telexpage.com. It runs 100% local in your browser and makes creating an encrypted PDF from a message as simple as possible. It works offline too. It's been really useful for me, hopefully it's useful for you too.Remember to send the password trough a different channel!Aug 21, 2026 3:42 PM

Show HN: Bounded GenAI metrics from Otel traces with O raw promptshttps://github.com/llm-measurement/otelcol-genai-sketchesHi friends,Author here. Like to present a project I've been working on - Otelcol-GenAI-Sketches, a Otel connector that works on genai/agent traces, and summarizes them (via sketches), to produce:() exact request counts/totals for tokens; () distinct users/prompts (estimates) (*) 'heavy' items in terms of tokensWhy does this exist: I'm a data scientist by profession, and needed to look at Otel traces, but soon ran into cardinality and portability issues, along with privacy issues (raw prompts being transported elsewhere, like for analysis in a notebook env is a no-no). I wrote a sketchlib first (llm-sketchkit) and then the connector for Otel collectors. To try it out, just:(i) git clone https://github.com/llm-measurement/otelcol-genai-sketches.gi... (ii) cd otelcol-genai-sketches (iii) export GENAI_SKETCH_SECRET="$(openssl rand -hex 32)" (iv) make example-up (v) profit! This would start a demo app that includes a Otel collector, prometheus server/db and a grafana dashboard. The repos contaAug 21, 2026 3:37 PM

It has learned to scan its surroundings for agent markers: AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, .cursor/rules, .kiro/steering, and forty others. Anything on the screen that points to these markers becomes a source of the scent - an editor window with an open project, a line in Finder, or a desktop icon. Show HN: Tosynch – reconnect with your friends and meet oftenhttps://tosynch.comI built this app to solve problem I had, and perhaps others too. I have been finding tough stay in touch with friends. Other than occasional hi/hellos, there is lack of meaningful interactions ongoing basis. Tosynch helps with connecting with existing friends, without calendar setup. It does one thing only and focuses on that. There is no hidden agenda of selling personal data for ads, nor any scheme around increasing likes. There is no discovery mechanism, and no public profiles. If we want to reduce our usage of phones and devices, we don't need another app to helps us constrained. We want to create more opportunities to meet people we already know. Tosynch helps increase those opportunities. It nudges after a chosen period, to reconnect and meet.
