Capturing an immortal photograph of jazz legendshttps://www.cbsnews.com/video/capturing-jazz-legends-art-kane-harlem-1958/In 1958, photographer Art Kane assembled many of the greatest legends in jazz on a brownstone stoop in Harlem; his picture became one of the most famous images ever taken of artistic royalty. Correspondent Mo Rocca talks about Kane's iconic group portrait with the photographer's son, Jonathan; and about the legacy the musicians left behind with legendary bassist Ron Carter, who played alongside nearly all of the jazz greats pictured that hot August day.

Show HN: Rmp, a Subsonic music player for generating playlists on the flyhttps://github.com/codesoap/rmpWhen listening to music, I often don't play whole albums, but string together songs that capture my current mood. In the past, I've written a tool that records my hearings and generates suggestions from my usual listening patterns[1] and used it with some scripts around mpd. This made my way of listening to music easier and worked decently, but I wished I could also sync and use this with my phone.Recently I've discovered Subsonic, a protocol for music servers and players. It caught my eye, because it supports "scrobbling" (apparently the common term for "recording hearings") and generating similar-song-lists. Pretty much exactly what I had been doing and many music players support this feature to create "instant playlists". With a little bit of hacking[2], it was easy to integrate my existing, collected hearing patterns into a Subsonic server. While I found a decent Subsonic client for my phone, I didn't find a terminal music player that worked for my style of listening. So I wrote rmp

Ask HN: What a fullstack dev should know about security?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49408476Hi all,I am asked to help a fullstack dev team (Spring+Angular) to skill up in term of security.I am skeptical about fullstack profiles, how many fullstack devs knows in depth display:flex and in the same time transaction isolation level ?So as fullstack devs they are not supposed to become cyber-security experts in their company but since they don't have a cyber-security expert they must level up so they don't put their company at risk. Even if they hire one they must know all the basics that are related to development so they will be able to follow their cyber-security expert recommendations. They are not newbies, for instance they know about sql injection. Here is my checklist (I'll help them to learn all of that), what to you think ? There will be half theory and half practice.Introduction * Cryptography and security: two distinct domains. * Wording: hashing, encryption, key, certificate, signature, foward secrecy, CVC, zero thrust. * OWASP Top Ten 2025 and CWC Top 25 2025. * Securi

Show HN: linecast – weather, radar, tides and maps in the terminalhttps://terminaltrove.com/linecast/I've been working on linecast, a free and open source collection of six terminal applications: weather, radar, sunshine, moon, tides, and maps. It's as if the Old Farmer's Almanac was built for Minitel.I made it because I'd been using the terminal a lot more over the past couple of years, I'm opinionated about weather forecast IA and design, and I liked the idea of making useful little terminal desk ornaments. The applications use ANSI color and Unicode braille characters rather than graphics. They reflow as the terminal is resized and derive their colors from your current terminal palette, including when the theme changes while they're running. They're mouse friendly where it makes sense. There's no account or required API key. Forecasts and air quality come from Open-Meteo; alerts, tides, and radar use various public sources; Sun and Moon positions are calculated locally; and the maps use OpenStreetMap-derived vector data and public elevation tiles. The code is just the Python stdlib wi

Ask HN: What made you stop relying on tutorials?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49407394I learned to program mostly by tutorials. I did what they told me and it all seemed to be straightforward. But when I started up the editor and tried to build something without the tutorial, I often found I didn't understand the logic as well as I thought I did.I’m starting to think the tutorials are good to get you started on a project, but the real shortcomings become apparent during the building phase. Why did you stop using tutorials? What did you do instead?

Show HN: Ditdah – A Morse App for the Terminalhttps://encse.github.io/ditdah/I passed the Morse exam when I got my novice license, but I haven't started using Morse until recently. I'm really a beginner: I can key at about 15 WPM and am practicing for 20, but I'm still making mistakes, with an extra dit or dah here and there. Thanks to all the YLs and OMs who have worked with me so far!I'm able to decode Morse with pen and paper, as long as it's only 10–15 WPM, but that needs to improve. Most operators recognize CQ without even knowing Morse. I have already learned a few more phrases just by hearing them, like "TEST", "DE", "PSE K", "BK", "BT", etc. Nevertheless, I have issues with more conversational words like "sunny", but it will build up slowly, I'm sure.To help myself out, and to learn something new, I started building a terminal app for Morse decoding. It's built around a neural network that I trained and can pick up quite a bit of text really well. The interface is textual. These kinds of applications have a special place in my heart, as I grew up in the
