I spent my twenties bouncing all over the place; did a stint in the Army Reserves while shooting for liutenant bars that didn't work out (failed out of college and I was in ROTC). Did construction, real estate, grew weed in Denver for a year (legally), ended up bartending for roughly a decade. It was great in my early 20s. Not so hot to watch my age group get raises and salary increases.I have my GED and never finished college - left with a record-setting 1.2 GPA (I have severe ADD and I wasn't properly medicated, there were other problems too). Seemed like there was this universe of 'good jobs' that were simply not in the cards.So there I am, in my early 30s, struggling to make NY rent and watching folks get promoted and getting married and buying houses and all that stuff. Show HN: Collaborative Jupyter Whiteboardshttps://jupyterspot.com/I found a common occurrence in data science type of meetings is someone screen-shares their Jupyter notebook either by Zoom, Hangouts, or conference room display and then starts scrolling through it explaining their tables, plots, markdown, Latex, etc. When I want to ask a question about a plot that the presenter scrolled past, there's a lot of "can you scroll up a little, no too far, back down a little". If I want to point to an area of a plot or column in a table, I can do it in Zoom, but it's all out of place once the notebook is scrolled. Usually someone has to ask the presenter to zoom in to see some tiny Matplotlib font.This led me to start looking into multiplayer versions of Jupyter that strive to be like Google Docs. There's proprietary ones like CoCalc and DeepNote, then there's open-source work underway to add real time collaboration to JupyterLab using Yjs. I have all kinds of problems when using their web player compared to Netflix and YouTube:- subtitle settings get reset every time I close the website.- the button for changing subtitles is in the upper right corner. Once you open the menu the button for closing it appears in the upper left corner. You can't close the menu by clicking outside of it, despite the fact that you can still see the blurred video in the background.- pressing space doesn't pause the video, but repeats the last action you did. If you closed the subtitle menu by pressing esc, pressing space will open it again. If you entered the full screen mode, pressing space will close it.- there is no way (afaik) to open a list of all episodes from within the player. Spoiler: probably not.Many of you will have seen the cognitive feats of the chimpanzee Ayumu, in particular this video which went viral a decade ago: https://youtu.be/JkNV0rSndJ0Impressively, he memorizes the positions of 9 randomly placed numbers after seeing them for less than a second.Back in 2014, I saw the videos and went to visit the lab outside Kyoto where Ayumu and his chimpanzee colleagues lived. The place was amazing, professor Tetsuro Matsuzawa who headed the experiments was extremely friendly and showed me around. The animals had plenty of trees to climb, and participated in the cognitive experiments voluntarily - bribed with raisins and small pieces of fruit.Getting back home I wrote my first app, based on the most famous experiment - it took me 3 months to first learn to program but the app turned out well and was featured in some countries.
