Veteran-built iPhone steadiness tracker to help people avoid fallshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46226464Hi HN — I’m a veteran founder working on something deeply personal: helping people (including a lot of veterans and aging adults) stay on their feet longer. We’re building PinkSteady — an app that uses the iPhone’s IMU data to estimate steadiness and deliver adaptive balance training in short daily sessions. The problem: Falls destroy independence, cost the healthcare system billions, and most “fall prevention” solutions exist only inside clinics. There are balance exercises online, but compliance is extremely low. We’re trying to make steadiness training simple + habitual + measurable.Technical challenge: Consumer-grade IMUs are noisy. Gait patterns vary wildly. Most people do not want to strap on sensors or buy devices, so we’re trying to extract useful low-frequency stability features from phones people already have — placed inconsistently in pockets, belts, hand, etc. We’ve found:– gravity vector drift matters – window length selection changes user trust – feedback timing affects behaDec 11, 2025 1:16 AM

Launch HN: InspectMind (YC W24) – AI agent for reviewing construction drawingshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46219386Hi HN, we're Aakash and Shuangling of InspectMind (https://www.inspectmind.ai/), an AI “plan checker” that finds issues in construction drawings, details, and specs.Construction drawings quietly go out with lots of errors: dimension conflicts, co-ordination gaps, material mismatches, missing details and more. These errors turn into delays and hundreds of thousands of dollars of rework during construction. InspectMind reviews the full drawing set of a construction project in minutes. It cross-checks architecture, engineering, and specifications to catch issues that cause rework before building begins. Here’s a video with some examples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mvn1FyHRlLQ.Before this, I (Aakash) built an engineering firm that worked on ~10,000 buildings across the US. One thing that always frustrated us: a lot of design coordination issues don’t show up until construction starts. By then, the cost of a mistake can be 10–100x higher, and everyone is scrambling to fix problems that Dec 10, 2025 4:05 PM

The most requested feature was shared accounts — for couples, roommates, or small teams tracking expenses together.I just shipped that update. What's new:- Shared accounts with multiple members- Role-based permissions (Owner, Admin, Member)- Invite system via email- Activity history showing who made each edit- Clear UI for switching between personal and shared accountsNow multiple people can view/update the same finances without sharing logins. How it works internally:- New account_members join table in SQLAlchemy- Simple RBAC layer (endpoint permission checks)- JWT tokens now include current_account + role context- Transaction actions logged with the acting user- Background summarization runs per account instead of per userStill trying to keep it lightweight while making shared money tracking practical.Questions for the HN community:- Is the RBAC model (Owner/Admin/Member) too simple or too complex?- Would you exDec 10, 2025 3:02 PM

Ask HN: Better places to work for burntout SWE?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46211822I've tried my share of startups and megacorps, FAANGs. I am in a stage where I cringe on hearing a mission is so important that it needs a 996 culture. I also hate work getting stolen in the name of collaboration and politics in general thats daily business in Megacorps. I just want to bang out code, mentor juniors and deliver value in a small team that doesn't have an unhealthy obsession with growth or overworking. Maybe with rich founders who don't want to get more rich.Where can I find good places to work, especially in the US that offer: 1. Remote first setting 2. Mission oriented like Privacy, non-profit background etc (or Open Source with proven history) 3. Holocracy/Flat structureI think the above 3 criteria will really narrow down places that prioritize mission over growth/profits and automatically not pay a lot yet have a higher technical bar that deters a lot of folks who would end up optimizing for things that lead to a mess. Painting Galaxy Clusters by Numbers (and Physics)https://www.nasa.gov/general/painting-galaxy-clusters-by-numbers-and-physics/Galaxy clusters are the most massive objects in the universe held together by gravity, containing up to several thousand individual galaxies and huge reservoirs of superheated, X-ray-emitting gas. The mass of this hot gas is typically about five times higher than the total mass of all the galaxies in galaxy clusters. In addition to these […]Dec 9, 2025 9:07 PM

Show HN: Detail, a Bug Finderhttps://detail.dev/Hi HN, tl;dr we built a bug finder that's working really well, especially for app backends. Try it out and send us your thoughts!Long story below.--------------------------We originally set out to work on technical debt. We had all seen codebases with a lot of debt, so we had personal grudges about the problem, and AI seemed to be making it a lot worse.Tech debt also seemed like a great problem for AI because: 1) a small portion of the work is thinky and strategic, and then the bulk of the execution is pretty mechanical, and 2) when you're solving technical debt, you're usually trying to preserve existing behavior, just change the implementation. That means you can treat it as a closed-loop problem if you figure out good ways to detect unintended behavior changes due to a code change. And we know how to do that – that's what tests are for!So we started with writing tests. Tests create the guardrails that make future code changes safer. Our thinking was: if we can test well enough, we cDec 9, 2025 5:35 PM
