Why AI Needs to Pull Its Head Out of Its Ass and Get Bret Victor-Level ControlsLet’s get real: AI sucks at editing. Sure, it can spit out rough drafts—cool faces, surreal landscapes, or random game ideas—but when you try to refine that output? Forget it. You’re left yelling at the screen, “No, AI, I said tweak the lighting, not turn my Roman villa into a goddamn UFO hangar!”This is a problem. A big, hairy problem. If AI can’t do high-fidelity editing, it’s not a tool—it’s a toy. What we need are controls that give us real power over the details, like sliders, dials, and live previews. We need Bret Victor-level genius design to take AI from half-baked gimmick to something useful.AI Can’t Handle Nuance Here’s the thing: AI can generate stuff. But the second you try to make a specific change—like, “Make this face look more Emily Blunt and less John de Lancie”—it completely craps the bed. Why? Because that kind of adjustment isn’t simple. It’s about tweaking hundreds of tiny details: bone structure, skin texture, eye shape, expression, all working together. AI doesn’t

Show HN: A simple automated list of gadget deals with affiliate linksSearching for deals on tech stuff isn't so fun. Some sites are heavy on SEO chum and posting as many keyword-laden headlines as possible. Aggregator sites are flooded with whatever products the retailer APIs and feeds push out. I got fed up with all this while shopping online last weekend, so set about making what I'd hoped to find in the first place: a basic, somewhat-automated list of dealsIt's perfectly boring HTML with automatic price checks. There's no ads, no cookies, no signups, no writing for machines. The idea is to strike a balance between completeness and simplicity, so people can pick a decent deal without ado whenever they need one. The latest prices are fetched from Amazon, and links to the Wayback Machine are included so users can check for deceptive "yo-yo" deals.Another minimalist project of mine, txt.fyi, benefited hugely from feedback here way back when.I suppose the obvious shortcomings are:• further refinement might inevitably drag it toward more content (risk comp

Show HN: Flect AI – The Podcast Search Tool I Wish ExistedHey HN! Checkout Flect, a modern AI powered search engine for YouTube podcasts. Describe the content not the keywords.Flect lets you describe a moment in a podcast and it returns a list of relevant YouTube podcast clips with links to the exact timestamp in the episode. So far I have the top 40 podcasts, 16k episodes, 30k+ hours of content, all searchable by context.Lex Fridman (3+ years ago) - "one of the things that sucks with podcasts is it's hard to find stuff..." https://flectai.com/link/?id=677d98e4bb1e4ace8a95598df6cefbb...Background: I love podcasts but I can never find the clips I’m looking for. Podcasts are exploding in popularity but theres no good search tools out there to find what I'm looking for. I feel like I'm in the pre-search engine age of the internet again but for podcasts. I tried a ton of tools out there but was unable to find anything that worked well. All I could find was naive keyword title searches or AI transcript summarization apps. I want to type in the con

Ask HN: How Ray Bradbury's Advice on Writing Can Be Applied in Programming?1) The best hygiene for beginning writers or intermediate writers is to write a hell of a lot of short stories. If you can write one short story a week—it doesn’t matter what the quality is to start, but at least you’re practicing, and at the end of the year you have 52 short stories, and I defy you to write 52 bad ones. Can’t be done. At the end of 30 weeks or 40 weeks or at the end of the year, all of a sudden a story will come that’s just wonderful.2) What you’ve got to do from this night forward is stuff your head with more different things from various fields . . . I’ll give you a program to follow every night, very simple program. For the next thousand nights, before you go to bed every night, read one short story. That’ll take you ten minutes, 15 minutes. Okay, then read one poem a night from the vast history of poetry. Stay away from most modern poems. It’s crap. It’s not poetry! It’s not poetry. Now if you want to kid yourself and write lines that look like poems, go ahead and

There are two kinds of truthsI'm almost certain that what I'll write down is in the 101 textbook of epistemology, but lately I've been fascinated by two different kinds of truths that govern our lives. There's learnable truth. Eg.: Water is made of 2 hydrogen and one oxygen. The universe is 13.7 billion years old. Dinosaurs roamed freely and ruled this planet once. We evolved from single cell organisms and therefore each and everyone one of us here today is a de facto winner of trillions of chance events: the genes that make us triumphed through countless generations, people who had to meet met, wars that killed millions did not kill our ancestors (or not in time), therefore rendering an incalculable number of alternate scenarios pointless and meaningless , because we are fucking here, breathing, living, loving, working. That sort of stuff. It's incredibly humbling and deep. But at the same time, that's all learnable. You need a brain and a textbook and you get this knowledge instantiated within said wet neuron-mee

How to convince my parents that masters in IT in Nepal is not worth the hassle?I am from south asian country.Parents are forcing me to do masters in data science and analytics. I want to do masters, but not in my home nation. And I don't really have money for doing it in Europe/US. My best bet has been on getting Assistantships and merit-based scholarships per semester. However, I do realize it's extremely competitive and luck is a huge factor as I've some friends who got C grades in engineering getting RA in the USA.I've a bachelors degree in computer science. And I must say it left a lot to be desired for me in terms of both knowledge and grades.Pros of masters degree:- Get good grades and apply for abroad for scholarship.(But extremely impossible to get good grades with full time job).- Good connections in data field as there will be lots of eager to learn students.- I've been self learning stuffs like data structures, algorithms, database, programming, distributed system etc. This degree will provide me with a structured approach to learn all these.Cons of de

Ask HN: How to deal with a serious mental health breakdown?I am dealing with a delicate problem concerning my housemate who has recently had a very serious mental health breakdown. This man is my friend of a decade and a housemate for 5 (uneventful) years. He began behaving erratically last week, and got progressivlely worse over the last weekend to the point where he was not really making any sense at all anymore. ("Reality is an illusion - but he knows the truth now" type stuff). He was not sleeping and began talking to himself.I no choice but to call his family and also a mental health crisis team. The crisis team arrived first with police and forcibly entered his space. This made him very angry, both at them and me, and he was forcibly removed to a hospital where I understand that he is refusing any sort of treatment and cannot be forced. His family arrived to pack some things for his stay and found a half-written suicide note in his room. He is claiming it is "creative writing".My flatmate is fiercely intelligent, and very highly educated. H

Ask HN: Why would a CA revoke a cert with a public private key?To get working HTTPS on localhost, something I have done in the past is: - register myproject.dev, - point it to 127.0.0.1, - create a cert for it, and - just store the private key in the repo. Every coworker can check out the (private) repo and has working HTTPS without any fuss or configuration. There are projects like https://lcl.host, but they require installing stuff on the machine and/or modifying the browser trust configuration. Why has nobody just registered a similar domain like lcl.host, pointed it to 127.0.0.1, and published the private key for everyone to use?Would the CA revoke this cert? Why? Doesn't the domain owner get to define the set of servers they allow to use the cert, and if that set just happens to be everyone, so what?Is this "there are limits to how wide you can distribute your private key" policy documented somewhere?Looking at digicert[1], if a revocation request is submitted, the owner must approve it. What happens if I just don't approve it?[1]: https://docs

Serious question: What to make of "crazy" folk's research?Greg J Marchand, MD has co-authored Systematic review and meta-analysis of vaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery vs laparoscopic hysterectomy https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10910317/.I have no way to tell if there are any problems with the methodology, conclusions, etc. I know nothing about the topic or how to assess sciency stuff.BUT, I can say that based on his response to a Kamala Harris tweet that women are not receiving the care they need and deserve, in which he called the VP a "lying piece of sh!t", that I question his research. (https://bsky.app/profile/mollyknight.bsky.social/post/3l4nckbgsly2g).So, serious question: Should the MD's research be taken seriously based on his socials, this response in particular, his reviews, etc.?

Ask HN: The friendship paradox in sheep's clothingIt occurred to me that the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendship_paradox explains:Imposter syndrome: the tech-savvy I know know more techSocial anxiety: the cool kids I know know more cool stuffI have not seen this paradox connected to these contexts. Is this interpretation of the paradox legit? Are feelings of inadequacy vs network effects simply statistics playing out? Anywhere else this paradox applies?

Show HN: Fantasy Sports with Supabase, Vercel, and Next.jsHave enjoyed playing fantasy sports for years. This year I have a league going with friends for a $500 prize pool. It's tough to do a full team with drafts, because it takes so long to monitor injuries, set lineups, etc. So we came up with a new game mode. Just pick one quarterback per week, and if he throws for more yards than his real life counterpart, you advance. Person who advances the farthest without getting eliminated wins the $500. The catch is that each quarterback can only be picked once by each contestant throughout the whole NFL season.I used Supabase to do the authentication and login/signup process. Supabase is also used for the database. For example when my friends and I login to make our weekly picks, those picks are stored in Supabase. The rest of the project uses Vercel and Next.js. I have read stuff online about people who wake up to unexpectedly high Vercel bills, so I'm hoping that doesn't happen to me (tips on how to avoid this are appreciated).Right now I'm still

Ask HN: Should we start a discussion about the DSA?Under the Digital Services Act platforms are forced to comply with removal requests for content which is deemed in violation of the regulation.According to the "DSA Transparency Database"[1], approximately 1.2 million pieces of content are removed daily (at least in terms of their visibility inside the EU) because they fall into the category of "Illegal or harmful speech", the reason being "online services are being misused by manipulative algorithmic systems to amplify the spread of disinformation"[2].Ironically, algorithms are heavily used to perform automated decision-making on the type of content that is being removed. Platforms are subject to heavy fines for not complying (so it's better to remove more stuff than otherwise), and there's no transparency in the process. What's the content that is actually removed? A couple of people I occasionally watch on YouTube have had their content removed and/or their channel demonetized under the DSA for completely fine content (expressing opi
