Ask HN: Why is hackernews so old-fashioned?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17412237As a web developer, it's always seemed strange to me that a tech incubator would have such an old-fashioned website. It's nice in some respects - pages load extremely quickly and the layout is compact and to-the-point. I was starting to think it was just minimalist by choice and not actually outdated, but then someone mentioned that async requests are done through an tag instead of ajax, so now I'm wondering what the story is there?Has it just been left alone because it's not broken? Or because they're worried people would get upset about changes? Or for maximum backward-compatibility? I'm not complaining; I'm just really curious.

Ask HN: Why does some music labels hide their albums on Allmusic.com?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10412420Now and then when I visit http://allmusic.com and click an album I get an error page saying "Due to label restrictions, we are no longer permitted to display this information on AllMusic."I find this very strange, why on earth would a label restrict information about an album they have?So I asked Allmusic that question and got this response from Zac Johnson, Senior Product Manager: "If I felt as though I was comfortable going into the intricacies of the deals that are in place between a specific worldwide distributor and our data provider, I would detail it further, but the truth is that it's an area that I don't want to poke further."Example album: "The Definition" by Jon Bellion. http://www.allmusic.com/artist/jon-bellion-mn0003006966/discography (click the album link to see the error message)To see the response from Allmusic, go here: https://getsatisfaction.com/allmedianetwork/topics/some-albums-are-unreachableCan HN shed some light on what's going on?

Ask HN: Staying Happyhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10104051I really remember it, back to the time when i was in college, i have so much tasks. I needed to attend campus club. Lots of assignment. But the fact i was happy still surprises me.It has been ~1.5 years since i graduated from my college and got to work as a software engineer. I got decent job with decent salary (at least pretty good in my area). The workplace itself considered as a "fun" environment: sleeping pod, ping pong table, coffee machine and no cubicles. Also, workload is lighter than class assignments. But it seems like i am not happy anymore -- i don't know why. (Btw, yes, i do love coding. I do some of my pet projects in weekend)I tried to do so much things (to try) making myself happier: Cycling around the city, playing some game with friends; but none of them seems to be working. After all, i want to create happiness, not to "do something" or "buy something" to make myself happy. I know happiness is intrinsic and subjective. Two persons doing a same thing may perceive that

Ask HN: Why doesn't hn have a notification mechanism?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9502725//Half rant, half ask hn...please forgive. Why doesn't hn have a notification mechanism equivalent to reddit's orange-red?When someone posts something sensible in response to one of my comments on (any) social platform then I'd like to know about it so that I can thank them/respond/decide to ignore.hn does not do this - worse...recently responding to old comments was disabled. Now I appreciate hn's minimalistic design and that they don't bug me with adverts and random ad notifications...but this just seems broken when viewed in terms of the forum's broader purpose of facilitating dialog...

Help choose which Linux distro saves the earth from alien invasion.https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6880434This post is for something I have made. So it is, by definition, self promoting. But I know many of you will be interested. So, with that in mind, I'm going to post it anyway.I have almost finished a novel. And I need help getting some dedicated writing time to get the last ~10k words down and final edits in place. The book, “Steve’s Laptop”, is a Sci-Fi Comedy about a developer named Steve who, while working at “the world’s largest software company” near Seattle, is trying to save the world from an alien invasion. Primarily with his laptop. Hence the title. If I were forced to compare it to something I would call it: “They Live” + “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” + “The IT Crowd“.I'm holding a "Help me finish this book" sale/fundraiser. A pay-what-you-want deal where you get my existing books, and get a chance to take part in shaping a small part of the book itself.Specifically, you get to vote on which Linux distro is used on "Steve's Laptop". If you want to see Arch save the world f

World's Roundest Objecthttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMByI4s-D-Y%3Fhd%3D1The world's roundest object helps solve the longest running problem in measurement -- how to define the kilogram. A kilogram isn't what it used to be. Literally. The original name for it was the 'grave', proposed in 1793 but it fell victim to the French Revolution like its creator, Lavoisier. So begins the tale of the most unusual SI unit. The kilogram is the only base unit with a prefix in its name, and the only one still defined by a physical artifact, the international prototype kilogram or IPK.But the problem with this definition has long been apparent. The IPK doesn't seem to maintain its mass compared to 40 similar cylinders minted at the same time. The goal is therefore to eliminate the kilogram's dependence on a physical object. Two main approaches are being considered to achieve this end: the Avogadro Project and the Watt Balance. The Avogadro project aims to redefine Avogadro's constant (currently defined by the kilogram -- the number of atoms in 12 g of carbon-12) and reverse

Ask HN: How should I go public with a security hole?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4050901We're evaluating an expensive software system for a certain industry. We've found public facing exploitable holes in the login system (default passwords, improper firewalls, SQL injection), which is directly translatable into profitable fraud. That is, if we used this system and someone exploited it, they could cause direct financial harm. These systems are almost always exposed to the public internet.I spoke to the company, and they seemed rather apathetic about the situation, although they said they'd fix the SQLi. Despite the codebase being in C, they report they've had no RCE security issues, "just crashes". I find that highly unlikely, more no one bothered investigating. How should I handle this? I'm worried for my own company which is at risk, and I'd also like to publish this info, as this market tends to sweep things under the carpet. In the past, with another vendor in the same market, I've privately reported, and found the vendor lied about fixing things and did not explain the

Ask HN: Can I help you be more awesome today? (No strings. Inquire within.)https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2767448This last week has been absolutely ridiculous for me. I'd like to make it up to myself by doing something meaningful for some strangers. I like this community a lot and want to see if there's anything I can do to make you a little more successful. No strings. To give you an idea of what I might be able to help you with, let me tell you a few things I've done to help others...- Last night, I volunteered at TEDxMIA's screening of TEDGlobal where I fulfilled their video stream management and multiplexing fantasies,- I've built network operations center monitoring software for proprietary wireless protocols. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnleO8H4lyY)- I regularly brainstorm with others in the SoFL entrepreneurial and tech circles as we look for ways to grow our community and attract talent to our market.- I'm an early adopter, enjoy playing with new tech and can provide strong, constructive, specific feedback.- I understand good design from bad design. Aesthetics are not lost on me.- I h
