Ask HN: Thoughts on Friend Making Apps?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49383929I've been seeing an influx of friend making apps like 222, Timeleft, Real Roots, BE.IRL, and so many more. I do think that with the increasing use of social media, endless doomscrolling, and AI, human connection has been impacted adversely in the last decade.Has anyone used these apps? What're your thoughts on them? Do you think the "loneliness epidemic" is really solvable by these types of apps or is there something larger at scale that needs to be done?Aug 21, 2026 4:52 AM

Are you good at AI, or just using it?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49378057We’re working on a ladder for individual AI proficiency and would love feedback on both the levels and the definitions.L0 New: brand new to AI, or has not yet used it.L1 Chat: simple prompt-and-response use. Work is serial: ask, wait for an answer, then ask again.L2 Contextual Work: gives AI relevant documents, data, or workspace context so it can work within the actual artifact and produce a more useful result.L3 Orchestrate: coordinates multiple agents or AI roles across independent workstreams, with work that may review, challenge, compare, or build on other work. This is not just for engineering.L4 Automate: creates workflows that are triggered by business events and run without someone sitting at a laptop directing each step.L5 Loop: feeds the output of those workflows back into shared knowledge or a company brain, so future workflows improve over time.A few things I’d love your perspective on:Are these the right levels? Are any of the names unclear or overlapping? What observableAug 20, 2026 6:04 PM

Show HN: WaveHouse – Supabase for ClickHousehttps://wavehouse.devWhile building an IoT telemetry solution, we ran into hurdles with Clickhouse. For one, you can't insert quickly AND durably into Clickhouse without setting up something like Kafka, which gets complicated for quick projects wanting to make use of Clickhouse's powerful features. Then, trying to actually query Clickhouse and show data in a UI required a whole backend API to handle auth and permissions. We figured that all these parts together – fast, durable ingest, row-level and column-level security and roles, and realtime streaming – were a lot of scaffolding to have to rebuild for every project we wanted to use Clickhouse in. So, we built them all into a single Go binary to be deployed alongside Clickhouse, to help lower Clickhouse's barrier to entry. We call it WaveHouse.Would love any feedback as we work on improving and adding more features to this OSS project!Aug 20, 2026 6:00 PM

Launch HN: Vendo (YC S26) – Let users build features on top of your producthttps://github.com/runvendo/vendoHi HN, we’re Yousef & Nour, founders of Vendo (https://vendo.run). Vendo lets users create new features inside the software they already use. A user describes the dashboard, workflow, or small app they need, and Vendo builds it on top of the product’s existing data, API, and interface.Demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdpHehY64lsWe built Vendo because every SaaS eventually faces the same problem: every customer needs something slightly different. One wants a new report and another needs a workflow that only makes sense for their team. These requests either sit on the roadmap, become one-off engineering work, or force the customer into spreadsheets and external tools. We wanted the user to be able to create the missing feature themselves, without leaving the product. Here is how it works:- npx vendo init reads the product's API surface, theme, routes, and more. These are used so that the apps Vendo creates (1) look on-brand and native and (2) have the ability to read data and performAug 20, 2026 3:29 PM

Algorithm Interview: a conversation between two parrotshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49373709Algorithm Interview: a conversation between two parrotsAll children know that parrots can talk. All adults understand that parrots simply repeat sounds. You'll laugh, but these same adults actually believe that an Algorithm Interview is a conversation between a very smart algorithm expert who is trying to find out whether the candidate understands algorithms at an acceptable level…So, how many ycombinator.com readers have successfully passed the algorithms interview? Probably tens of thousands.Well, how many of them were able to understand that breaking down sorting into independent stages is a Fundamental Discovery? Zero!Zero questions and comments: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49314420P.S. Have you ever thought that NOT everyone has a mental model? But most people just memorize ready-made answers instead of understanding the problem?I recommend reading The Programmers' Stone https://www.datapacrat.com/Opinion/Reciprocality/r0/index.html ---------------8Aug 20, 2026 12:29 PM

Show HN: RelArena-α – open-source releases for Relational Learninghttps://github.com/PriorLabs/relarenaI’m happy to announce our first release in relational learning at Prior Labs, continuing our commitment to open science. Most of the data that actually matters to a business- users, transactions, sessions, orders- lives in relational databases, not in a single spreadsheet. SQL is built for backward-looking analysis: what happened, how much, when. It can't tell you whether a given user will churn in the next 30 days. This is a relational machine learning problem: making predictions directly over the structure of a database. It's still a young field, where results are often hard to reproduce, hard to compare across methods, and rarely tested outside benchmarks like RelBench. We argue that these problems have slowed progress in relational learning. We open-source three pieces of software that we expect to accelerate research in the field towards meaningful, real-world impact.First and foremost, we release -α: a unified framework for running and comparing baselines on RelBench v1 tasks. Enshitification Comes for Cursorhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49362593Sometimes I feel like the last person on HN that's still using Cursor for development work. But if anyone is curious - its getting a lot shittier, quickly. The entire application seems to exist to steer you towards using Grok and whatever new product Cursor's team has pumped out this week. You're constantly prompted to switch to using a Cloud agent, including the UI seemingly changing as you're working which caused me to accidentally select a cloud agent instead of my local system a few times. There are daily pop-ups in the app to check out this and that new thing, these are at least pretty easy to close and ignore. This morning Cursor decided to select a new Grok model by default without prompting, which I didn't notice until it had spent 10 minutes burning tokens on a simple bug investigation that Opus resolved in 30 seconds.I finally bit the bullet and setup Pi with Open Router the other day. I still prefer the UI of Cursor but this is like death by a thousand cuts.Aug 19, 2026 3:04 PM

Show HN: Zmina – clipboard with per-app paste transformshttps://zmina.app/Hi HN,Zmina sits between copy and paste. It reads what's in the clipboard and where you paste, and offers a short list of actions you can apply. Without switching apps. The problem: you copied the log and need to paste it into the issue, but it contains sensitive info (emails, IPs, usernames in paths, etc.). So you need to remove all of these from the log before publishing. It’s probably a couple of regexes.Another problem: you want to paste Rust code into Discord chat. So you have to wrap it in ```rust to have it formatted and highlighted properly. One more: you want to paste a large fragment of text (or code) from the clipboard into an email. As a file. Probably you will: create a new file, paste into it, save the file and then attach it to the email. And then probably you will want to remove this temp file. What about pasting an image from the clipboard as a data URL, pasting CSV as a table into Markdown, pasting JSON as a .env file?I built Zmina to resolve these (and other) problems.
