Ask HN: How common is banning Docker?I was doing some client work recently at a bank, where most of their engineering is offshored one of the big offshore companies.The offshore team had to access everything via virtual desktops, and one of the restrictions was no virtualisation within the virtual desktop - so tooling like Docker was banned.I was really surprsied to see modern JVM development going on, without access to things like TestContainers, LocalStack, or Docker at all.To compound matters, they had a single shared dev env, (for cost reasons), so the team were constantly breaking each others stuff.How common is this? Also, curious what kinds of workarounds people are using?

Ask HN: How to properly show my skills for startup roles?I've got ~5 YoE as a Full Stack Engineer in a small software consultancy/house. Buried between dry charts and assembler notes were these odd references to an “experimental modular assembler.” At first, I figured it was just another obscure internal tool — IBM had tons of those back then. Ask HN: Why don't Americans hire human assistants for everyday tasks?in the US, there doesn't seem to be much of a demand for "domestic labor". the idea of personal assistants or housekeepers is seen as something exclusively for the ultra-wealthy, but i'm not sure why.in particular, i'm curious about what this says about the potential for the adoption of AI-based assistants.for example: there's all sorts of stuff that I have to do outside of work that eat into my free time ( grocery shopping, simple meal prep, light housecleaning, running random errands). What IAM / Authentication for B2C to pick if hosted solutions is not an option?For some reason Cleck/Auth0 is not an option, that must be something that I can selfhost.Also something that I'm really looking for is Authentication with local credential (password, passkeys, password-less etc) in native apps without OIDC webview popup (until Oauth for firstparty apps is released and adopted OIDC is PITA in this regard) but with most providers as I understand this is not an option.
