Million Singles Projecthttp://www.millionsinglesproject.com/One Million Singles on One Webpage A new website claims to display one million singles from around the world on one webpage. The website, established by 32-year-old Israeli Etai Hugi, attempts to collect one million male and female singles from all over the world on a single page. The founder claims that following a disappointing love affair that left him with a broken heart, he heard from a friend that "true love has a one in a million chance” and decided to take this one step further, establishing a website that intends to display half a million single females on one side and half a million single males on the other. He named it "The million Singles Project”, or MillionSinglesProject.com. Participation in this project costs $1 for a lifetime membership, guaranteeing a picture of the participant + a short text and a link of the participant's choice. The website was set up in English and addresses singles all over the world. The founder says that in the future, a search by country will

HIRING/RECRUITNG: Software Geniushttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6230913Look, we are a growing consulting and product firm. We are looking for a person that can take our founder's (my) architect role and help make the company succeed while I am out whoring/selling us as needed. We build some awesome products, focused on mostly the e-commerce and big-data space. Far more on really hard big-data than anything, but e-commerce interests us as a unique opportunity. We have an amazing group of people in Florida. Of which we have one person that could step into this role, frankly you would likely compete with them, but in a positive way. But because we aren't stupid, it seems logical to look at people smarter than ourselves. If you have interest, we want to talk. We aren't funded, we are bootstrapped. Which frankly means there is an opportunity that is usually unfounded. We are looking at Angles over the next 6-9 months, but frankly want to see if we can make it without them. Not because they are bad, but because we believe in our team and that our team should win

World's Roundest Objecthttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMByI4s-D-Y%3Fhd%3D1The world's roundest object helps solve the longest running problem in measurement -- how to define the kilogram. A kilogram isn't what it used to be. Literally. The original name for it was the 'grave', proposed in 1793 but it fell victim to the French Revolution like its creator, Lavoisier. So begins the tale of the most unusual SI unit. The kilogram is the only base unit with a prefix in its name, and the only one still defined by a physical artifact, the international prototype kilogram or IPK.But the problem with this definition has long been apparent. The IPK doesn't seem to maintain its mass compared to 40 similar cylinders minted at the same time. The goal is therefore to eliminate the kilogram's dependence on a physical object. Two main approaches are being considered to achieve this end: the Avogadro Project and the Watt Balance. The Avogadro project aims to redefine Avogadro's constant (currently defined by the kilogram -- the number of atoms in 12 g of carbon-12) and reverse

Tools to monitor website performance?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6068848Hi,I'm curious what the current state-of-art for website performance monitoring is?Most of the tools I've seen are either Pingdom-style applications, which simply tell you if a website if up or down, or they're like YSlow-style, which run a bunch of tests to see if you're following best practices. But is there something like say, Chrome's SpeedTracer that you could run as a service, and monitor your website's performance over time? Or before/after each commit? What would you guys recommend to track the performance of your own website over time, or gather deep-level metrics?Could you use something like PhantomJS to achieve this? Are there any existing open-source projects that already do this?Cheers , Victor

Ask HN: Pre-hackathon jittershttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5631622I'm signed up to go to my first hackathon in Nashville (www.hacknashville.com) this weekend, which I heard about through the Memphis python user group (someone posted it in the google group, though it looks like no one from that group is going). I don't expect to know anyone at the event, have no job, development, or relevant projects to show off, and am a little self-conscious about whether I'll feel really out of place and outpaced. I do have a CS degree and think I'm decent at Python, have a pretty wide (but not necessarily deep) knowledge of other languages, tools, and frameworks, and am generally pretty personable, but am having second thoughts about going. The event is 'sold' out (it was free, but all the registration spots are full) and there is a waitlist for cancellations, so I should probably let them know ASAP if I'm not going to make it.Does anyone have any thoughts or words to put me at ease? Or would you suggest giving up the spot to someone better qualified? My goals for
