Bookwell.com.au is registering businesses without their consenthttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22214049I'm pretty sure this is not ethical. It may even be borderline legal if legal at all.My girlfriend has a salon and a personal booking system. Her name is a trademark registered in Australia. Here we were looking at google searching for her business when we see a page with her name in the first page of a Google result. On the page I can see her logo, and a list of services (with links that go to nowhere) with the banner at the bottom "this business accepts phone bookings only". The banner contains a link to her personal phone number. This is outrageous. We immediately sent a takedown notice by email. The website is bookwell.com.au. I've made a research and they're doing this for a lot of business in Sydney. Most, if not all business, have no idea that they were registered on the website. I've asked a few customers of a business and they said they're trying to book with the business but they can't cause they find it through Google. Of course, they can't, because of the fact they have been rFeb 1, 2020 11:41 PM

Show HN: Caffeinator – New coffee shops delivered over texthttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22206786Hey HN,I built caffeinator https://www.caffeinator.co/ as a side project around finding/discovering new coffee shops as a fun way to explore my neighborhood and go for a walk.We send a text at your desired frequency (daily to weekly) with a coffee shop near you. Honestly, there's nothing different here then going to to google maps/yelp, searching for a cafe, then discovering it that way, I'm just lazy and I felt like there were too many choices. It's definitely in an early stage, but would love any feedback. Surprisingly, someone picked it up on Nextdoor and wrote an article https://missionlocal.org/2020/01/caffeinator/Jan 31, 2020 10:54 PM

High School Fizzle Syndrome – Predicting Future Successhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21910408Given the high number of accomplished people on HN, I'm curious about the phenomenon that some people call "High School Fizzle Syndrome" -- when former high school superstars fade into the background in their adult life. In this case I'm referring more specifically to the academic superstars rather than, say, athletic superstars. At my high school there were a large number of academic superstars. These were people who routinely placed first in national and international competitions, were class presidents, had perfect GPA's and standardized test scores, were Rhodes Scholars, and went on to gain admission to coveted colleges like Harvard/Yale/Stanford/MIT. The fierce competition was encouraged by teachers and parents alike. The superstar students complied with the demand -- these were highly motivated, extremely hardworking and talented individuals. The consensus was that, as a result of their early impressive achievements, they were destined for great things later in life.In hindsight, Dec 30, 2019 2:55 AM

Ask HN: YouTube threatening to shut off API access to my language learning sitehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21500874For the last two years, I've been working as an indie developer on a language learning app called www.captionpop.com. This project uses the YouTube API to help language learners study foreign languages. It's gotten pretty popular, especially with English learners. The primary feature of CaptionPop is that it allows users to watch YouTube videos with multiple subtitle languages at once. It also allows users to bookmark subtitles, and create study flashcards from video snippets.YouTube has been doing an audit of my use of the YouTube API for the last couple of months. Right now, they are saying that I am violating their terms of service by interfering with the functionality of the YouTube embedded player. The following lines in the ToS were citing in my violation:Policy #: III.F.1.a (YouTube Look and Feel) API Client must not change or interfere with user interfaces in YouTube Applications unless you have obtained YouTube's prior written approvalPolicy #:: III.I.6 (Additional Prohibitions)Nov 10, 2019 11:24 PM

Launch HN: Stir – Government Procurement as a Servicehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21381411Hey HN!I'm Jay Nath, founder of STIR (https://www.cityinnovate.com).STIR is a digital platform that connects the world’s most innovative tech companies with governments to solve challenges over 16 weeks. At the end of the 16 weeks governments can choose to go into contract with the startups (nearly 80% get a contract). Our key innovation is streamlining govt procurement by 10X: govts can issue an RFP in days vs months/yrs and startups can respond in hours vs days/weeks of effort.I created STIR when I worked for the Mayor of San Francisco to help close the innovation gap between cities and private-sector. It never ceased to amaze me how many of workflows and services were paper-based or put together using a MS Access database and yet we're surrounded by so much tech talent. My vision was to help catalyze the growth of the govtech ecosystem by creating startup-friendly contract opportunities. Something that was really important to me was ensuring that governments articulated their pain poOct 28, 2019 8:41 PM

Launch HN: Multis (YC S19): online business bank account for cryptocurrencyhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21280238Hi HN,We're Théophile and Thibaut, and we're building Multis (https://multis.co): an online bank account designed for companies holding cryptocurrency. We're helping them store it, spend it and earn interest. We have been in this industry for the past 3 years. Thibaut used to lead sales at Stratumn, a Nasdaq-backed company helping companies securing their shared workflows through cryptocurrencies. Théo built several decentralized applications before starting the company in 2018.Wallets are the cornerstone of the industry: you need them to store and transact with cryptocurrencies. But these wallets are not designed for business. You cannot perform simple business operations like running a payroll, paying vendors, or earning interest, which you can currently do from your modern business bank account.Cryptocurrencies - and particularly stablecoins - are a reliable, fast and cost-efficient medium of exchange. It’s a technology that enables anyone to move value and assets across borders, witOct 17, 2019 9:25 AM

Ask HN: What's is the state of the art of lifelogging?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21268588I want to log everything about my life.A wearable camera paired with advanced computer vision would go a long way, but I haven't found a practical solution yet.I already log the easy stuff:- Computer/phone usage (RescueTime, ActivityWatch, keylogger, TimeSnapper)- Location (Google Maps Timeline, GPS Logger)- Pictures (Google Photos)- Internet usage (Google History)- Fitness (Mi Fit, Google Fit, Strong)- Finance (Mint)I even experimented with 24/7 background audio recording but didn't have much success with Google Cloud Speech-to-Text.The biggest challenge for me is manual logging. Taking pictures of my environment can go a long way (food, receipt, barcode, injury, product, book, ad, ticket, activity, weighing scale) but it becomes more difficult when I need to retrieve and log information from memory (cash spending without a receipt, weightlifting workout, pain, mood, idea, question, todo). I don't like single-purpose apps designed to log a specific domain of events and would prefer soOct 16, 2019 9:36 AM
