Ask HN: Bonding Internet Connectionshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20580811Hi Guys - I'm based in Australia and have slow ADSL2+ (4Mb/1Mb down/up). I live semi rural so have limited to no mobile reception. I can get 'skymuster' which is a satellite connection that should provide about 20Mb down. That said I've has mixed reviews like it 1) stops working in heavy rain plus 2) accounts are limited to 200bg and I probably use double that in a month and 3) I run my mobile calls over wifi so worried about the latency of satellite only.I’ve started looking at signing up to both services to get the best of both and bonding these 2 connections. The solution to bond connections that keeps showing up is Speedify. There doesn’t seem to be a huge amount of options for a non-technical person like me. I'm wondering if people have any recommendations on the best way to bond 2 internet connections?Aug 1, 2019 3:11 AM

Ask HN: How do I get into bioinformatics as a CS student?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16275367Dear HN,I am a 20-year-old university student majoring in computer science and minoring in mathematics with the intent of finding a way to build a career around data science and computational intelligence. Recently, I've started gravitating towards bioinformatics because it seems like the sort of work that appeals to me. I like working on hard problems whose ideal approach isn't well established and the idea of working with data related to the fabric of life itself seems like it motivate me to get out of bed every morning and look forward to what I do every day. However, I have at best an American-high-school-level of understanding biology. I remember the basics: cell anatomy, the DNA transcription process, basic biochemical pathways, and basic human anatomy. How do I build upon my current knowledge of biology so that I can be a strong contender for a role as a data scientist at a biotech company or at a research lab in the next 5 or so years?Specifically, I would like to find a job wheJan 31, 2018 5:06 PM

Ask HN: How good are the local startup scenes in Lisbon and Sofia?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10638815I'm a solo founder and my startup is beginning to get some momentum. To capitalise on this I've decided it's time to move ops out of my spare bedroom and in to a more dynamic environment. Main goal for moving: increase my chances of bumping in to like minded people and finding a co-founder / first hire.I've narrowed the choice down to Lisbon or Sofia (having started with London, Paris, Barcelona, Sofia and Lisbon) and would love to hear the experiences of any HNers who have spent time in either city - especially if it was while bootstrapping your own startup (or working for someone else's)!Things I'd love to know: quality, size and diversity of local talent; quality of local accelerators and investors; how easy/hard it is to find (good) people that want to take a risk and work for an early stage startup; friendliness of the local startup scene. My pros for Sofia:- Betahaus co-working space- Fantastic cost of living (~30% cheaper than Lisbon - which itself is already cheap)- Lovely city,Nov 27, 2015 9:01 PM

Ask HN: Staying Happyhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10104051I really remember it, back to the time when i was in college, i have so much tasks. I needed to attend campus club. Lots of assignment. But the fact i was happy still surprises me.It has been ~1.5 years since i graduated from my college and got to work as a software engineer. I got decent job with decent salary (at least pretty good in my area). The workplace itself considered as a "fun" environment: sleeping pod, ping pong table, coffee machine and no cubicles. Also, workload is lighter than class assignments. But it seems like i am not happy anymore -- i don't know why. (Btw, yes, i do love coding. I do some of my pet projects in weekend)I tried to do so much things (to try) making myself happier: Cycling around the city, playing some game with friends; but none of them seems to be working. After all, i want to create happiness, not to "do something" or "buy something" to make myself happy. I know happiness is intrinsic and subjective. Two persons doing a same thing may perceive that Aug 22, 2015 10:41 PM

Show HN: Minimalist HN reader with material designhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9755681Hello everyone!, this is a app I have being working on recently. I know there are number of HN readers on android. But couldn't find a one suitable for daily use. So I started developing this app. News articles, comments open in default browser of the device. Click on title of the item to open the article and anywhere else to open comments. Pull down to refresh. Swipe left and right to change the tabs. This is only the first phase of application. Lot of functions yet to be implement (you can read more in Google play listing). Before developing further I would love to have some feedback. BTW I'm a CS undergraduate.Thank you.Image :http://www.kasungamlath.com/assets/hnyc_framed.png Application :https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kasungamlath.hackernewsAny feedback is appreciated, thanks!Jun 22, 2015 1:12 AM

Ask HN: Finding a technical lead in Cambridge, MA?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8675900Over the last several months, I have tested and validated a business opportunity in the legal space. Customers are very interested - 4 or the last 5 have asked to be part of a paid Beta as soon as possible. I'd like to get something workable into customers hands as soon as possible, but am hamstrung by my technical skills.I'm by background and skillset much more business than technically oriented. I know enough Python/Django to be dangerous and have built a working proof-of-concept / demo. However, I know when I'm at the limit of my capabilities, and to take it from POC to working product, would like to bring on someone to help buildout a real product. Some of the problems that need to be solved for (many of which I've been dealing with in one capacity or another): - web scraping. Done mostly with BeautifulSoup to date + lots of custom regexes. There are a lot of corner cases to deal with. - regularly scraping 10,000s of pages and watching for changes on those pages - entity and person Nov 30, 2014 3:42 AM

Ask HN: Need of a much better GitHub/Gitlab?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7618161Github [1] has become slow and the hosted solution (enterprise version) is too costly, so we have been using Gitlab which is a Github like repository hosting platform that also has issue tracking and merge/pull request based workflow and integration with its CI (gitlab-ci project). In the past couple of months, we've been facing a lot of problems for example -- Gitlab has broken our development workflow (due to bugs in it), the web hooks would stop working, the merge request diffs would be too slow to load, sometimes the ruby based backend would blow up and give us 500 etc. So, we've started working on a single page webapp based on Go and AngularJS that just does minimalistic things that we need. We wanted a tool that is easy to manage and install so we chose Go (single binary) and we wanted to keep the frontend easy to implement and use so we chose AngularJS (single page app). What are the pain points you've faced while using these tools, and what features etc. you want in it and will yApr 20, 2014 7:30 PM

Help choose which Linux distro saves the earth from alien invasion.https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6880434This post is for something I have made. So it is, by definition, self promoting. But I know many of you will be interested. So, with that in mind, I'm going to post it anyway.I have almost finished a novel. And I need help getting some dedicated writing time to get the last ~10k words down and final edits in place. The book, “Steve’s Laptop”, is a Sci-Fi Comedy about a developer named Steve who, while working at “the world’s largest software company” near Seattle, is trying to save the world from an alien invasion. Primarily with his laptop. Hence the title. If I were forced to compare it to something I would call it: “They Live” + “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” + “The IT Crowd“.I'm holding a "Help me finish this book" sale/fundraiser. A pay-what-you-want deal where you get my existing books, and get a chance to take part in shaping a small part of the book itself.Specifically, you get to vote on which Linux distro is used on "Steve's Laptop". If you want to see Arch save the world fDec 10, 2013 1:03 PM

My mission to solve the problem with Facebook, Google+ etc.https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3838747Now I know everyone has their own issues with the current state of social networks. Some have issues with privacy, some have issues with too many friends, some have issues with spam. My issue is with all the above, but more importantly I am sick of the fact that I look like everyone else and I don't own the content. I am being controlled and it needs to stop.I am tired of feeling like I live in an apartment complex where I have no control over how things function or look. It's not even like a complex anymore. It's more like a prison.Best quote in a long time..."If you aren't paying for a product, you are the product."Your data is being sold to advertisers so they can find sneaky was to throw their ads in front of your faces. And who is going to take the time out to actually go through on FB and customize your ad experience so they are relevant to you? Not me.For the past year and a half I have been working on a solution to solve these problems and many others. It's been a very difficulApr 13, 2012 8:39 PM

Ask HN: Does explaining your program's complete design reduce sales?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3674312I'm working on my very first Android application; and, I've been considering talking through the different parts of my design; and how and where my code is growing organically to support the different ideas that I have.Since I'd basically be explaining every feature and design decision I make from here on out, this leads me to a question. Would I lose sales from my application? I'm very interested in selling it.It's an active wallpaper that plays the Game of Life. I know the market already has one, but I was going to be adding more features to it that would make it more interesting and perhaps a good wallpaper.Mar 7, 2012 4:49 AM

Ask HN: What's the point with so many stupid people in the world?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2997502Have you ever tried to sit and write code in a bar? It's nice. It's a hell of a lot more conducive to creativity than working in an office cubicle. You got your drink, you got your smoke. You sit at a table with wifi and a plug and you're invincible until about six drinks in. You look out over the patio at the mountains and you think...this is what life's all about. Then at about 6pm the soccer game starts. Suddenly, the owner of the bar comes out and unplugs your laptop, turns on the TV, and cranks the volume up to 7000000. Even though there's no one there. You say, "Man, that's too loud." And he says, "when they show up, that's what they're gonna want."Sure enough, about 3 minutes before the game starts, the patio goes from empty to packed. People are trying to move your table, your laptop bag. Then suddenly they're all staring, slackjawed, at this stupid TV that's blasting the same shitty commercials it was showing yesterday, last week, last month.HN readers, I'm sitting in that bar Sep 14, 2011 7:22 PM

Ask HN: Is that important for a developer to have an impressive personal page?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2407157I am a Python developer with good design background. I am willing to expand my freelance activity in Python web development area now. I have seen tons of visually appealing impressive personal pages of web designers. Those that are more web graphic designers working with HTML/CSS/JS than hardcore programmers. I bet you saw much of them too on the web. They have professional look and feel giving you an image of the person. I tried to find something similar for the programmers to inspire myself for creating my personal page. I searched for 'web developer portfolio', 'web developer personal page' and some other keywords on Google. I didn't find anything as impressive as web designers' pages. All I could see were some boring CVs or something like CVs, sometimes with a small photo of a person and more or less average look. Obviously everyone is the best at what he is the best and programmers sell their technical/analytical skills. They can show perfectly structured code to impress a potentiApr 4, 2011 4:15 PM

Ask HN: Do you think primarily in English?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=387921Rather, do you think primarily in your native language, or more in terms of abstract imagery?I've noticed that rather than forming images in my head to represent ideas, I will instead often think in English. For example, if I'm working through a logic problem, I will repeat the various elements of the problem in my head in English repeatedly until I solve it.I'm unfortunately unilingual. English is the only human language I have ever learned. I've noticed that when I speak phrases in Spanish, I'm actually speaking English in my head. It's like a lookup table. By that I mean, let's say I want to communicate "How are you?". Rather than attempting to reason through this task in Spanish (by trying to communicate the individual elements "how", 'in what way', "are", 'your state of being', and "you" 'the person I am communicating with'), I try to remember the phrase in Spanish that corresponds to the ordered set of words "How are you?". So it is rote memorization -- I'm not thinking in SpanisDec 6, 2008 6:54 AM
