My training is as a communications engineer. I've thought about information theory, signal processing and statistics. Is there any demand for these skills in that sector? Thanks

What to Do with Spreadsheets in an Organizationhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24318471I work for a midsized public agency with some very smart but non-technical colleagues(housing, environmental health etc.) I was recently hired to improve our "data infrastructure".I am currently talking to departments to understand the landscape by asking them a few key questions: 1) What data sets have they used in the past year 2) Where and how do they source it (census website, internal databases etc) 3) How frequently do they refresh it and reuse it.I am starting to see a pattern where some datasets are sourced from internal systems with their own backing databases. It's a bit of a clutter but I can bring these different datasets to a centralized warehouse/datalake like environment that has discovery and querying capability. However, there is another consistent thread expressed by departmental analysts - "I get this other data from another agency via an excel spreadsheet as an email attachment" which I am struggling to understand what to do with. At this point I am not seeking a too

More Idleness would be betterhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24168732Idleness. A word that has fallen into disrepute. Idleness, as the proverb warns, is the root of all vice; and more than a few even see in it the worst of all vices: the refusal to perform in a performance-based society. The calls for deceleration, which are becoming louder and louder, have rehabilitated idleness to a certain extent in recent years. In the wellness sector at least it has found a firm place - and in countless magazine articles when it has to do finding oneself or burnout syndrome.Idleness requires free time. This is more than leisure time: it is a time free of constraints, empty time that can be filled with what the moment offers.Caught in the daily hustle and bustle, it is difficult to develop new perspectives. One is so busy mopping up the water that one does not even think of turning off the tap.In order to get a grip on things at any time, your hands should be free. Being idle means to have time to do the right thing at the right moment.(Source: Jupp Hartmann: Depart

Launch HN: QuestDB (YC S20) – Fast open source time series databasehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23975807Hey everyone, I’m Vlad and I co-founded QuestDB (https://questdb.io) with Nic and Tanc. QuestDB is an open source database for time series, events, and analytical workloads with a primary focus on performance (https://github.com/questdb/questdb).It started in 2012 when an energy trading company hired me to rebuild their real-time vessel tracking system. Management wanted me to use a well-known XML database that they had just bought a license for. This option would have required to take down production for about a week just to ingest the data. And a week downtime was not an option. With no more money to spend on software, I turned to alternatives such as OpenTSDB but they were not a fit for our data model. There was no solution in sight to deliver the project. Then, I stumbled upon Peter Lawrey’s Java Chronicle library [1]. It loaded the same data in 2 minutes instead of a week using memory-mapped files. Besides the performance aspect, I found it fascinating that such a simple method was

Launch HN: Aquarium (YC S20) – Improve Your ML Dataset Qualityhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23821502Hi everyone! I’m Peter from Aquarium (https://www.aquariumlearning.com/). We help deep learning developers find problems in their datasets and models, then help fix them by smartly curating their datasets. We want to build the same high-power tooling for data curation that sophisticated ML companies like Cruise, Waymo, and Tesla have and bring it to the masses.ML models are defined by a combination of code and the data that the code trains on. A programmer must think hard about what behavior they want from their model, assemble a dataset of labeled examples of what they want their model to do, and then train their model on that dataset. As they encounter errors in production, they must collect and label data for the model to train on to fix these errors, and verify they're fixed by monitoring the model’s performance on a test set with previous failure cases. See Andrej Karpathy’s Software 2.0 article (https://medium.com/@karpathy/software-2-0-a64152b37c35) for a great description of th
