Ask HN: International Student Founder in the UShttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25884142I am currently an international student in the US majoring in CS and minoring in Entrepreneurship. I am currently working on a side-project that allows students find affordable housing and roommates. International students are on a F1 status(which is the student visa for US). However, there are many restrictions that prevents international students from making money on their idea or grabbing good opportunities such as raising funds. Is there any international students who built a startup in the US? What can international students do about this? Please let me know your thoughts.Jan 23, 2021 5:19 PM

High School Fizzle Syndrome – Predicting Future Successhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21910408Given the high number of accomplished people on HN, I'm curious about the phenomenon that some people call "High School Fizzle Syndrome" -- when former high school superstars fade into the background in their adult life. In this case I'm referring more specifically to the academic superstars rather than, say, athletic superstars. At my high school there were a large number of academic superstars. These were people who routinely placed first in national and international competitions, were class presidents, had perfect GPA's and standardized test scores, were Rhodes Scholars, and went on to gain admission to coveted colleges like Harvard/Yale/Stanford/MIT. The fierce competition was encouraged by teachers and parents alike. The superstar students complied with the demand -- these were highly motivated, extremely hardworking and talented individuals. The consensus was that, as a result of their early impressive achievements, they were destined for great things later in life.In hindsight, Dec 30, 2019 2:55 AM

Ask HN: Bonding Internet Connectionshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20580811Hi Guys - I'm based in Australia and have slow ADSL2+ (4Mb/1Mb down/up). I live semi rural so have limited to no mobile reception. I can get 'skymuster' which is a satellite connection that should provide about 20Mb down. That said I've has mixed reviews like it 1) stops working in heavy rain plus 2) accounts are limited to 200bg and I probably use double that in a month and 3) I run my mobile calls over wifi so worried about the latency of satellite only.I’ve started looking at signing up to both services to get the best of both and bonding these 2 connections. The solution to bond connections that keeps showing up is Speedify. There doesn’t seem to be a huge amount of options for a non-technical person like me. I'm wondering if people have any recommendations on the best way to bond 2 internet connections?Aug 1, 2019 3:11 AM

Ask HN: How do I get into bioinformatics as a CS student?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16275367Dear HN,I am a 20-year-old university student majoring in computer science and minoring in mathematics with the intent of finding a way to build a career around data science and computational intelligence. Recently, I've started gravitating towards bioinformatics because it seems like the sort of work that appeals to me. I like working on hard problems whose ideal approach isn't well established and the idea of working with data related to the fabric of life itself seems like it motivate me to get out of bed every morning and look forward to what I do every day. However, I have at best an American-high-school-level of understanding biology. I remember the basics: cell anatomy, the DNA transcription process, basic biochemical pathways, and basic human anatomy. How do I build upon my current knowledge of biology so that I can be a strong contender for a role as a data scientist at a biotech company or at a research lab in the next 5 or so years?Specifically, I would like to find a job wheJan 31, 2018 5:06 PM

Ask HN: How good are the local startup scenes in Lisbon and Sofia?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10638815I'm a solo founder and my startup is beginning to get some momentum. To capitalise on this I've decided it's time to move ops out of my spare bedroom and in to a more dynamic environment. Main goal for moving: increase my chances of bumping in to like minded people and finding a co-founder / first hire.I've narrowed the choice down to Lisbon or Sofia (having started with London, Paris, Barcelona, Sofia and Lisbon) and would love to hear the experiences of any HNers who have spent time in either city - especially if it was while bootstrapping your own startup (or working for someone else's)!Things I'd love to know: quality, size and diversity of local talent; quality of local accelerators and investors; how easy/hard it is to find (good) people that want to take a risk and work for an early stage startup; friendliness of the local startup scene. My pros for Sofia:- Betahaus co-working space- Fantastic cost of living (~30% cheaper than Lisbon - which itself is already cheap)- Lovely city,Nov 27, 2015 9:01 PM
