Show HN: Sociables, a Discord/Reddit/Patreon hybrid community platformhttps://sociables.com/browse/allWe've been working on Sociables in our free time over the past few years and have decided to officially launch today in light of all the recent Reddit news. While we initially intended the product to be primarily used by content creators, the platform works well as a drop-in Reddit alternative. We’ve combined Discord style voice rooms, Reddit style discussion boards, Twitch style instant messaging chatrooms, and Patreon style tiered membership plans into a singular platform. Here's a list of the core features of each community:1. Customizable discussion boards: Community owners can set up threaded discussion boards for different topics related to their niche. For example, if a user creates a community for a niche like "Cars," they can create different discussion boards for subcategories like "Car Mods," "Car Photos," "Car Sales," etc. This is different from Reddit, where you only have a singular discussion board per community. All the posts within these discussion boards are crawlable by

Show HN: Variety Quiz - Simple quiz to understand the balance of your lifestylehttps://www.varietyquiz.com/Hi HN,My name is Clay and I live in Austin. I built this simple quiz 'app' called Variety Quiz as part of a larger project I'm working on around lifestyle variety and its relationship with how we feel about ourselves as people. This feels a bit strange to post (it's clunky) but I think it's time I start putting things out there. You'll see that there is a callout to Self Sport which is the larger app/project I've been working on tied to this. It’s a much more professional effort and will launch later this summer. So why Variety Quiz?Variety Quiz is a novel tool to check in with your lifestyle and satisfaction levels in general (across key life needs). This helps to understand how you're structuring your attention today and consider changes that may be worth making.I think a lot of people spend years never really thinking about their lifestyle and the 'balance' (not a great word, but a common word for this) they've created. We all have things that make us up and form our identity — Belief

Tell HN: Stripe killed my music locker service, so I'm open sourcing ithttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36403607I'm writing this to warn anyone who might have a similar service, including backup hosting services.I run a small website at inter.tube. It lets you upload your music collection and stores it in Backblaze B2. It provides a simple web interface to listen to your collection, and support for the Subsonic API (allowing native apps to use it). Fundamentally it is not very different from something like Dropbox or Backblaze: it is a "dumb" backup that simply stores what you give it. It doesn't perform "matching" against other files, it doesn't allow you to access music you didn't explicitly upload, and it doesn't even deduplicate files between different users. It doesn't allow "sharing" of music either, download links are tied to a short access token for a specific user's login session. The only difference between other backup services is that we use the metadata tags in your uploads to organize things better. According to Capitol Records, Inc. v. MP3Tunes, LLC, this is absolutely OK in the e

Ask HN: How do you focus on productivity when working on the computer?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36346043I'm curious what methods people here use to avoid distractions when working on a computer. Obviously computers are excellent tools, but simply having access to an internet browser can be a gateway to a massive time sink. Some things I have tried:- Set up a Pi-Hole with distracting websites on the blacklist so the DNS requests do not resolve. I disabled this to dork around on the web today, so clearly not an effective commitment device.- "Cold Turkey Writer" which locks down your PC giving only a text box essentially, until you write X words. I didn't find this useful for my writing style since I tend to look up additional references/sources as I write, and losing access to that hurt my flow.- Using a Raspberry Pi 4B as my desktop PC, with the idea being I couldn't play games and YouTube isn't entertaining when 30% of the frames are dropping. I ended up wasting a bunch of time messing with Linux trying to get stuff to work (oh Obsidian needs to be compiled and installed for ARM, oh there

Complexity: Deno or Postgres or DigitalOcean or Me?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36324237The specifics:I am trying to get my (new-to-me) Deno web server talking to a Digital Ocean managed database instance running postgres using remote access.I just can't get there from here. I'm new to Deno, and tried both of the postgres modules I can find (postgres & postgresjs). I have a pretty standard DO droplet and a DO managed Postgres(ql) instance. I am trying to switch from using KOA - my favorite nodejs webserver which works - to Deno. I used the same string I use with psql to access the database when using Deno. It works with nodejs (the pg module) & psql. With both modules on Deno it fails with an invalid TLS blah, blah, blah. The question:So why am I posting this on HN? Because for the first time, I think I am going to abandon a new technology because the world is just too complex. I am unhappy about this, but it has made me think about how very, very many pieces need to work together. Is Deno good? Yes, (despite the TypeScript). I would like to adopt it. Is Postgres good? No,

Ask HN: Application Focussed AI Learninghttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36322424I’m a senior leader with a technical background as an engineer and development manager. I build with React/Rails in my spare time but my current job is not at all technical. My role is changing at my request to look at ways we as a business could apply AI. It’ll be exploratory, with 2 devs working under me to build prototypes and experiments.I’m a big believer that a technical manager or leader should understand the technology, with bonus points for being able to build with it.It’s worth saying that we don’t expect to be creating our own models, rather building on top of others’ using APIs, fine tuning, prompts, vector databases and similar. There’s lots of good developer focussed learning. I’ll run through the basics there. However I’d like to learn how businesses are applying AI and am seeking out how best to discover this.I see MIT Sloan and other institutions have short courses that appear to offer what I’m looking for [1]. I have read that these executive education programs are outso
