TB 26-04 Webbings for Use in Elevated Oxygen EnvironmentsFlammability test results for commercial-off-the-shelf webbings that meet NASA flammability requirements are reported for use in elevated oxygen environments anticipated for future lunar and Martian missions. Testing demonstrated that a webbing composed of 60% Kevlar®/40% polybenzimidazole (PBI) from Sturges Manufacturing Company, Inc., specifically the natural version, passed flammability testing per NASA-STD-6001B Test 1 using a […]

NASA’s Curiosity Mars Rover Discovers Field of Honeycomb TexturesAs NASA’s Curiosity rover recently began climbing up a Martian valley nicknamed “Valle Grande,” it sent back images that were a familiar sight to mission scientists: honeycomb-like textures called polygonal fractures, each one about 1.5 to 3 inches (4 to 8 centimeters) across. The mission has spotted small patches of these geometric shapes several times […]
ECLIPSE – Efficient variable Conductivity Lunar Insulator for Passive Surveyor Environmental controlAustin Phoenix Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State A disaggregated lunar infrastructure requires novel thermal management methods to enable future lunar operations. While thermal management solutions exist for large infrastructure, the smaller mobile systems that operate independently require improved temperature regulation devices that can survive without heaters or substantial power requirements, while limiting stress-inducing temperature fluctuations. New […]
Curiosity Blog, Sols 4941-4947: (Pin)Stripes on the Fourth of JulyWritten by Deborah Padgett, MSL Operations Product Ground System Task Lead at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory Earth planning date: Thursday, July 2, 2026 Curiosity spent the week leading up to the Fourth of July holiday approaching a geologic boundary between a very smooth but somewhat sandy region and a rougher bedrock unit. Leaving the polygonal […]
NASA Announces Winners of 2026 University Innovation CompetitionNASA announced the Massachusetts Institute of Technology project, Exploration-Class Lunar Integrated Power SystEm, as the first place winner for the 2026 Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts – Academic Linkage (RASC-AL) competition, which challenges students to bridge gaps in aerospace technology by innovating new system concepts and prototypes. Another team from the same university won second place overall for their project, Mars Exploration Layered Infrastructure for Operations, Research, and Advancement, while Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University took third place with the Mars […]
NASA’s SPHEREx Observatory Maps Interstellar Ice in Milky WayAn observation made by NASA’s SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) shows the chemical signatures of water ice (shown in bright blue) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (orange) in Cygnus X, one of the most active and turbulent regions of star birth in our Milky Way galaxy. The […]

Show HN: A local-first genomic analysis toolkitI built this over the weekend after downloading my raw file and realising how much clinically significant data was in there that the company never surfaced for me.The tool parses raw genotype files from 23andMe or AncestryDNA and does the following:Cross-references ~1,500 curated, clinically significant SNP variants across 21 categories (cardiovascular, metabolic, autoimmune, pharmacogenomic, etc.) Detects convergence across 22 biological pathways — individual SNPs are noisy, but when you have multiple variants across lipid metabolism, coagulation, and cardiovascular pathways all feeding into the same risk, that's a signal. The tool uses sigmoid synergy scoring to surface those patterns. Calls pharmacogenomic metabolizer phenotypes for 11 genes (CYP2D6, CYP2C19, CYP2C9, CYP3A4, CYP3A5, CYP1A2, DPYD, TPMT, SLCO1B1, UGT1A1, ABCB1) with CPIC-aligned star-allele calling, and maps 60+ drug interactions with specific dosing actions. Computes polygenic risk scores with z-score → percentile co
