Ask HN: Before launch – everybody says "dont connect the trading engine" – why?Hi HN Community, during the last couple of weeks i spend a lot of time on building a fully automated trading engine. Some kind of "disclaimer": im now in the financial space since ~13 years, working for startups, creating new banks and working for them. While i'm not an "equity guy", i thought there should be some potential when playing around with some of the data feeds: it should be possible to build a fully automated bot, which is just a simple trend-following model and the system should just jump on running trends on whatever mega-corp stock, go with them some days and then exiting. So i started to build an engine which contains all the things i learnt during this interesting journey: the system reacts dynamicly depending on different market structures, it also integrates events (like earnings dates etc), it goes long and short, it captures trends for only 2 - 3 days sometimes. Now, im that convinced that this application should work under real market conditions; during development, i

Ask HN: Can all-owner firms avoid labor law complexity FTW?I understand that labor laws are intended to protect workers and create a positive and healthy environment for everyone to contribute to enterprises on reasonable terms. At the same time, just looking at the press, it does seem employment systems as they stand have many unintended consequences, large overheads, and occasionally perverse incentives.More colloquially: I don't know a single founder or entrepreneurial engineer who thinks "oh great, ERISA, let's learn more about that today!"Could a firm position itself as having all owners and no employees to avoid these complexities and operate more efficiently on private terms? Has anyone seriously tried this in tech? Outside of tech there seem to be narrow successful efforts (single airline pilot LLCs, gig work, etc).Presumably, such a firm would have to find analogs for common arrangements such as compensation (salary, equity, benefits), but surely that could be done with a collection of standard private contracts. To name just a few pot

Should I bring on a Co-Founder?Hello hackers! I am current building a generative AI application that has 1700 users, of which 200 are paying $9/month. My background is essentially 10 years in digital marketing, system and process development for franchises, and inbound/outbound sales, whereas I only have 4 months of programming experiencing.I have built my entire application in react, using OpenAI's API of course, and I think that my project is novel and has potential to become quite large if executed properly. I've only been developing my app for 2 months now and everything is happening quite fast.I "feel" like I have everything handled and of course my to-do list and list of requested features is getting longer and longer, but I keep thinking if I could just hold out a little bit longer I can hire SOME of my problems away. Whether this be through freelancers or hiring full time help in-person or remote. This is more attractive to me because giving away equity is expensive. It seems that every single Y Combinator vi

Ask HN: Is there a structure for startups where you can have 50 founders? There is an enormous opportunity where lot of people could give small amount of time, network or money to make lots of ideas come to life. But right now it doesn't happen because of concerns:- distrust, how would I know I'm awarded fairly? who decides that? lets say I worked on something I was good at, i.e. I made a logo or I designed database schema. how much should I get?- accountability, this company gave 50 people its shares, where are they now? are they just vesting? why should I bother with that baggage? is there mechanism to dilute inactive participants? how much? who decides that?- fair accountingit's a legal challenge but also more of a logistic challenge.Imagine if there was crowd/democratic way to build companies:- people can join and leave- people shouldn't be able to game or take over the equity grants- people should be awarded appropriately- system should be able independently track cost and revenueI wish it could be done in a non-centralized way but I think there is no a

UK house prices set to plummet by 60%The UK government has flat out refused to get involved in the private mortgage markets, despite calls from housing experts and economists to intervene in the face of the predicted downturn in house prices.According to a report by the UK Housing Association, house prices in certain areas of the country are predicted to drop by as much as 60% in 2023, with the South and North West set to be hit the hardest. The report has sparked concerns that the middle classes, in particular, will be hit hard by the downturn, with many facing negative equity as a result of the falling prices. However, despite these concerns, the government has stated that it has no plans to intervene in the private mortgage markets. In a statement, a spokesperson for the government said: "We believe that the private mortgage market should be allowed to operate freely and without interference from the government. Intervention would only serve to distort the market and could have unintended consequences for both homeowner
