Ask HN: GDPR in 2022 – What do I need to know as a solo founder?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33191701It looks like things have been getting worst on the GDPR front, for what I can tell.I am getting messages from users telling me that that can't use my service because things like Google Fonts and Google Analytics have been essentially made illegal in certain European countries like France, Austria and Germany, due to recent court rulings.A user told me they know of people who got fined because of this.Is this true? I can only find a few references here and there, but there seems to be truth to it.My main question is, what did you do in your case to make your product GDPR compliant?Any links to services that you used would be very helpful. Here is what I did so far for compliance.I generated the legal documents like terms and conditions, privacy policy etc. using a third-party document generation service, and I added a PDF with a GDPR Data Process Agreement (DPA) listing the platforms that I use (Firebase, etc).I've set the region of my production databases to Europe. To give more context

We're building a SaaS tool to help run SaaS Businesseshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33188309We’ve been working hard over the past 12 months to solve all the problems we had in running our SaaS software as a business. This was everything from taking payment, paying our taxes, licensing our users, tracking sales, marketing and analytics through to building the core functionality of our apps.We found that there are a bunch of great tools out there to help solve each piece of the SaaS puzzle; Stripe, Paddle and many others for taking payments, Hubspot, Salesforce for tracking customers, Segment and Google for analytics etc. The list goes on…but each tool needed us to sign-up, on-board, learn and understand its specific Interface, implementation methods and functionality. This meant having to log into multiple dashboards, linking data up from one tool to another and many other pain points. And whilst each tool itself is very powerful and a great experience, running the SaaS product as a business was horrible - multiple tools just don’t join up properly. When we had built multiple ap

Vintage Tech Humor: Unknown Technology Definitionshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33153189While archiving an ancient USENET group, I came across this bit of crass humor from 2003.SEX/seks/ [Sun Users' Group & elsewhere] 1. Software EXchange. A technique invented by the blue-green algae hundreds of millions of years ago to speed up their evolution, which had been terribly slow up until then. Today, SEX parties are popular among hackers and others (of course, these are no longer limited to exchanges of genetic software). In general, SEX parties are a Good Thing, but unprotected SEX can propagate a virus. See also pubic directory.2. The mnemonic often used for Sign EXtend, a machine instruction found in the PDP-11 and many other architectures. The RCA 1802 chip used in the early Elf and SuperElf personal computers had a "SEt X register" SEX instruction, but this seems to have had little folkloric impact.DEC's engineers nearly got a PDP-11 assembler that used the "SEX" mnemonic out the door at one time, but (for once) marketing wasn't asleep and forced a change. That wasn't the

Risk factor for contribution made at each phase in a startup?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33129245I'm looking for your opinions on this question with the end goal to create a 'rule of thumb' guide. I'll use the results for a product I'm building and credit HN.In any bootstrapped startup, web3 community, DAO etc the initial founders wear the early risk. The founders’ experiments may fail and their work may be worthless up until the product gains traction. Over time the community gets behind the mission and ultimately the product “meets the market” and garners paying customers. At this point the risk is 1:1 meaning effort is directly remunerated.A startup evolves through phases of risk (from A “high” to E “low”) as a product progresses from Idea to Market. Phase Outcome & Examples of Activities:A = Minimum Viable Product (ideation, building, iterations) B = Product Beta (gathering early customer feedback, iterations) C = Market Ready (creating promotional materials, raising capital) D = Active Community Established (growth and engagement campaigns) E = Paying CustomersQUESTION:What i

Ask HN: Do I have “imposters syndrome” or am I just bad?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33113627Hey all, apologies in advance for any typos or grammar mistakes, im writing this on my phone. I'm a pretty Jr. developer with about 1YOE all things considered. Im entirely self-taught. I did a few months at an agency mainly writing JS and Python, I did a few months of contract work writing Elixir, and I've been in my current position for about 6 months, mainly writing TS.I left the agency due to getting a better offer (my current job) and chose not to renew my contract at the Elixir shop for the same reason, I didn't want to overstretch and decided to focus fully on my new role. I've never been reprimanded or spoken to about my performance in any of these roles. At the agency, the code I wrote was typically standalone. Small client apps in React or simple Python servers. Small, one-off tasks that didn't need to be maintained or integrate with any existing systems. This is where I feel I shine. My current role, however, is the complete opposite. Our product is massive, and spread out over

Ask HN: Why don't quant hedge funds have hardware labs?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33090014If I'm a hedge fund, I want to have data that (a) is useful for figuring out what to buy and sell and (b) other hedge funds don't have. The latter lets me outcompete hedge funds. Hedge funds even have systems for people (mostly brokers/investment banks) submit ideas to them on what to trade, and get rewarded if it's profitable.[1] Numerai has an explicit platform for this.[2]Why, then, don't hedge funds run their own hardware / R&D labs that design and deploy sensors to get data about the world other hedge funds don't have? Why don't hedge funds build and launch a bunch of cheap satellites with interesting sensors that only the hedge fund has access to? Or footfall sensors in major cities? Or agricultural sensors in target geographies?Taken to the extreme, why don't hedge funds build e.g. Twitter to figure out what people are talking about and why, but then not let anyone use the API? Or why didn't they build Google Streetview to figure out what was in the world and where? In other word

Show HN: Collaborative Jupyter Whiteboardshttps://jupyterspot.com/I found a common occurrence in data science type of meetings is someone screen-shares their Jupyter notebook either by Zoom, Hangouts, or conference room display and then starts scrolling through it explaining their tables, plots, markdown, Latex, etc. When I want to ask a question about a plot that the presenter scrolled past, there's a lot of "can you scroll up a little, no too far, back down a little". If I want to point to an area of a plot or column in a table, I can do it in Zoom, but it's all out of place once the notebook is scrolled. Usually someone has to ask the presenter to zoom in to see some tiny Matplotlib font. This led me to start looking into multiplayer versions of Jupyter that strive to be like Google Docs. There's proprietary ones like CoCalc and DeepNote, then there's open-source work underway to add real time collaboration to JupyterLab using Yjs. All of these are geared towards collaborative editing of the notebook code, but I really needed and saw a use for was

Ask HN: Can you trust a Chinese phone after replacing the OS?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33059744Xiamoi makes some amazing phones at an affordable price point. They also tend to use flagship Snapdragon processors and release the device tree and kernel source making third party ROM support much easier.I would like to buy one of these phones with the intent of installing ASOP or lineageOS. I don't mind maintaining the kernel branch myself and backporting fixes. I understand that there are proprietary blobs that run in userspace but I would trust these as I would get them from Snapdragon's official BSP website: codeaurora. I would remove anything that isn't necessary.Since I am very nice in this field, I had a few questions:1. Is it possible for Xiamoi to place a hardware backdoor? Or would this be near impossible to do at a large scale especially when using an American SoC?2. I notice that the firmware for various chips are loaded from the Android image on boot. I assume this is because it's cheaper and allows firmware to be updated. Are there any components in a normal phone where
