Ask HN: How much more desperate and crappy can Facebook get?For the past year or so, I have significantly reduced my usage of Facebook, I have stopped posting status updates, mainly just keeping my account for getting event invitations. Today for the first time, I noticed a "Stories from across Facebook" feature that shows content that have absolutely nothing to do with the lives of people you know, but random news articles on all sorts of topics (god knows if half of these news sources are even credible). Did a quick search of this feature, apparently it's been introduced a few months back and there is no way for users to turn it off. Show HN: Rockhopper – Launch windows apps from bash on Windows 10I made a thing this afternoon. If you are using windows 10 and would like to open windows apps from the ubuntu bash shell normally you can't do that. I wrote this app to (sorta) let you do that. It's a two part app, first is a dotnet core webapi C# app that runs on your windows box. Next is a shell script that you put in your path on the ubuntu shell.It's called Rockhopper (named after a species of penguin, since you are hopping form Linux to windows with this app is just seemed like the right name :) ), and you invoke it like this:rockhopper -c code -a C:\\\\Users\\\\shawn\\\\Documents\\\\file_to_edit.txtThat opens Visual Studio Code from windows with that file passed in. Couple of caveats, the windows app has to be launchable via the windows cmd prompt, currently only supports 1 argument to open and the pathing is touchy, and lastly this has absolutely 0 security built in. Ask HN: Why such a negative perception of Affiliate Links?I run a blog that (I hope) brings value to its readers. I do run some google ads which I know some people block.Obviously, the blog takes some of my time and costs to run. I'd guess in the big picture, no one that gets value from my blog blames me for trying to monetize.At times, I do link to products. I cannot think of a less obtrusive and more seamless method to monetize than to affiliatize those links. It isn't an intrusive ad. Beware of the pain when setting up a company in GermanI was raised in Germany, live next to Frankfurt. My wife and I decided to set up our incorporated consultancy company here. What we are going through might not be the same for you, but it could be similar. First: be warned. If you want to serve Europe, think twice if you absolutely need to have a German presence. It's been 9 months now that we are working to set up a functional company. 1.) It took about 3 months until the company registration went through. Ask HN: I'm 17. Should I drop school for YC S12?I'm extremely interesting in applying to Y Combinator for this summer. The only problem is that I'm still in Cegep (a two-year college for Quebec students before they go to university - I'm 17) and so if ever I get chosen, I still have one more year remaining to complete my program (International Baccalaureate in Pure & Applied Science).I don't think I would drop it, because I ultimately intend to go in computer science at Stanford. Ask HN: Does Google profile information you submit to Google Contacts?I've been digging through the new Google Privacy Policy and their Terms of Service. I've noticed that there is absolutely no mention, anywhere, of how data you submit about your personal contacts is used within Google itself. I became particularly interested once Google Contacts started suggesting that I merge my contact entries with links to their respective G+ profiles, when available. Most all of the discussion I've seen so far regarding Google's proposed merging of privacy policies revolves around how to protect your own personal data. It is unclear to me whether or not they consider information you provide about your personal or professional contacts as "personal information" or "submitted content". Big difference.Is this stated clearly anywhere in their policy or TOS or am I missing something?
