Will this become a thing?OK, onto the topic of today's little blog by me, your humble interlocutor.I just occurred to me that as a result of the tremendous velocity magnifier that is AI, there will be many upcoming societal changes, and many second order effects. One of these will be the rise in jobs that take care of, maintain, tend to, and operate these giant automated tools. Tools that, today, look much like ChatGPT, but in the future, will become highly specialized and do all sorts of funny things wonderfully well. Most likely.So, that's why I hit you with the paradoxical anachronism that jobs like Technician and Machinist are going to come back. AI Machinist (for a cyberspace machine), Technician (for an AI automation for some task). Tell HN: I learnt some new things while working on my projecthttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36454949Recently I worked on a simulation analysis which taught me several things:- To get the most out of Python, you really need efficient libraries like Numpy. I started off my project in pure Python and some Pandas. But soon I realized it was painfully slow and looked for better solutions.- Polars looked like a good Pandas alternative, but some googling revealed that it could be slower than Numpy. Although it's easy to work with dataframes (e.g., you can select a column by calling its name), I converted all my code to use Numpy and suddenly saw huge speed boost. But that wasn't the end of it. I was now in a rabbit hole...- Vectorization helped a lot with speed as well. I learnt that using the right tool (in this case, Numpy) guides you to do better and vectorize operations, whereas Pandas didn't enforce that technique on me.
