Ask HN: Not treated respectfully by colleague – advice?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45700879I work with a competent jerk: https://www.pickardlaws.com/myleadership/myfiles/rtdocs/hbr/...Backstory -- I joined my current team a year ago. It was falling apart. The team members hated each other and were trying to get each other fired. The team lead who’d joined a quarter before had quit to join another team largely due to conflict with one difficult coworker. Then I joined as the lead. I helped to stabilize the team over the last year. It’s grown from four to ten engineers. Three engineers joined specifically to work with me.Yet the entire time I’ve been on that team, that one difficult coworker has been criticizing and fighting almost everything I’ve done. That coworker was relatively inexperienced, yet was told by a previous director that he was meant to be the lead of this platform. Hence the fighting with the other lead from a year ago. And with me over the past year. It’s burning me out bad.It mostly comes across in passive-aggressive comments, and in trying to argue and prove

A soft power strategy to preserve non-sovereignty from Chinese land claims on the moonhttps://spacenews.com/a-soft-power-strategy-to-preserve-non-sovereignty-from-chinese-land-claims-on-the-moon/The United States’ goal of completing a crewed moon mission before China has been coined as the new space race, reminiscent of the days of Apollo. Similar to Apollo and the space race with the Soviet Union, the principle of non-sovereignty is at issue as is the rule-based international order. The issue of non-sovereignty in […] The post A soft power strategy to preserve non-sovereignty from Chinese land claims on the moon appeared first on SpaceNews.

Show HN: Remove Sora watermarks in 5 seconds – without quality losshttps://www.removesorawatermark.onlineHey everyone! I built a tool that removes Sora watermarks in about 5 seconds, and I'd love to share the story behind it. How it started: I've been watching people make money with Sora2 in wild ways - selling invite codes for thousands a week, generating instant product ads with UI screenshots, automating social media workflows with n8n... it's crazy out there. Check out r/SoraInviteCodes if you don't believe me. But here's the catch everyone hits: even as a ChatGPT Plus subscriber, you're stuck with that watermark. And when you think "okay, maybe it's for copyright reasons," OpenAI hits you with the reality - $200/month for Pro membership to go watermark-free. The complaints across Reddit, X, and Discord are... intense. So I built: https://www.removesorawatermark.online What makes this different: Most tools out there use open-source AI models to "paint over" the watermark - it's slow (1+ minutes) and quality is hit-or-miss. Mine pulls the actual original video from Sora's servers - the

Show HN: We built the first comprehensive benchmark for legal retrievalhttps://huggingface.co/blog/isaacus/introducing-mlebHey HN, I'm excited to share the Massive Legal Embedding Benchmark (MLEB) — the first comprehensive benchmark for legal retrieval.Unlike previous legal retrieval datasets, MLEB was created by someone with actual domain expertise (I have a law degree and previously led the AI team at the Attorney-General's Department of Australia).I came up with MLEB while trying to train my own state-of-the-art legal embedding model. I found that there were no good benchmarks for legal information retrieval to evaluate my model on.That led me down a months-long process working alongside my brother to identify or, in many cases, build our own high-quality legal evaluation sets. The final product was 10 datasets spanning multiple jurisdictions (the US, UK, Australia, Singapore, and Ireland), document types (cases, laws, regulations, contracts, and textbooks), and problem types (retrieval, zero-shot classification, and QA), all of which have been vetted for quality, diversity, and utility. For a model to do

Ask HN: How to properly show my skills for startup roles?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45614161I've got ~5 YoE as a Full Stack Engineer in a small software consultancy/house. We build products for external clients, covering everything from requirements gathering to production, with a focus on GenAI for the last two years.Goal: Land an international role at a startup, preferably in the AI/GenAI field, ideally Founding or Full Stack Eng positions.Problem: I'm not getting opportunities. I've been looking on and off for 2/3 years but only had 1 offer. My guess is my consultancy background isn't translating well on paper for the startup landscape. We don't operate like a traditional consulting agency. I function as a Product Engineer (Full Stack and GenAI) including client-facing responsibilities, talking with stakeholders, challenging designers' UX/UI deliverables, partial team management, ownership of the internal AI tooling and some public-facing marketing stuff. I think all of this doesn't show up properly on resume's experiences.I'm confident in my tech and soft skills. The main

Ask HN: How to stop an AWS bot sending 2B requests/month?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45613567I have been struggling with a bot– 'Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; crawler)' coming from AWS Singapore – and sending an absurd number of requests to a domain of mine, averaging over 700 requests/second for several months now. Thankfully, CloudFlare is able to handle the traffic with a simple WAF rule and 444 response to reduce the outbound traffic.I've submitted several complaints to AWS to get this traffic to stop, their typical followup is: We have engaged with our customer, and based on this engagement have determined that the reported activity does not require further action from AWS at this time.I've tried various 4XX responses to see if the bot will back off, I've tried 30X redirects (which it follows) to no avail. The traffic is hitting numbers that require me to re-negotiate my contract with CloudFlare and is otherwise a nuisance when reviewing analytics/logs.I've considered redirecting the entirety of the traffic to aws abuse report page, but at this scall, it's essentially a small D

Show HN: PAO Trainer – A small app I built to practice PAO memory systems [video]https://www.youtube.com/shorts/S_nBfn87uRoI’ve been experimenting with the Person–Action–Object (PAO) system — a memory technique that helps you memorize large sets of numbers by turning them into vivid mental images and short stories. To make my own training smoother, I built a small app that helps me:Assign a person, action, and object to each numberGenerate random PAO combinations to visualize as storiesPractice recall with flashcards, quizzes, and timed drillsIt’s helped me get faster and more consistent when memorizing number sequences — and made training a lot more fun. Here’s a short demo of how I’m using it: https://youtube.com/shorts/S_nBfn87uRoI’d love feedback or ideas from anyone interested in memory systems, learning tools, or visualization training — especially on how to make the practice even more effective or gamified.

Critique this 8–9-module course for experienced devs moving to contractinghttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45595957I’ve been a software consultant for ~30 years. I’m shaping a course for experienced engineers (US SWE/DevOps/SRE, ~5–15 yrs) who want to move into contracting using an agency-first workflow: you qualify/price/deliver; agencies bring openings and handle MSAs/SOWs. Expected time: 2–4 hrs/week.I’d love a sanity check from people who contract or place engineers: what’s missing, out of order, or unrealistic? What students should build • A realistic target rate (with clear rate math) • A recruiter-ready profile and 10–15-minute qualification script • A simple “operate-like-a-business” setup (LLC/banking/insurance) • A pipeline plan that typically leads to interviews in ~6–12 weeks • Tactics to avoid scope/rate mismatches and keep agencies happyDraft syllabus (9 modules)Module 1: Introduction — What’s This All About? The Mars moment: Why now is the time to build the futurehttps://spacenews.com/the-mars-moment-why-now-is-the-time-to-build-the-future/We’re entering a new era of space. One defined not by exploration alone, but by the infrastructure that makes a sustained presence possible. For decades, our presence in space has been limited to short-term missions: land, explore and return. But now that’s changing. Artemis is preparing the moon as a steppingstone to Mars, shifting the […] The post The Mars moment: Why now is the time to build the future appeared first on SpaceNews.
