After Andrew Ng's original Stanford AI Coursera, what?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34716543In 2017, "a friend"* did Andrew Ng's original Stanford AI Coursera course.- it renewed their understanding of Matrix Algebra and more importantly "why" they need it (being from India, they were fortunate that they learned matrices by rote, and the Indian education system ensured that details like "why" on earth they needed to study this thing never had a chance to pollute their pristine mind /sarcasm).- it gave them an intuitive understanding of how neural networks are a sort of regression (those weights are akin to regression weights).- it showed them some crazy things, such as how an image is fed into a neural network as a sequence of pixels. They suspect the way humans view images is more holistic... all pixels at the same time. They did it as a lark. Because pmarca said that he would work on BTC or/and AI if he were young again (they did the BTC Princeton Coursera too). They're glad they did Ng's course back then. Wonderful teacher, a gift to humanity.Since then, they've not done any

Show HN: Contactless Testdrive Plaformhttps://twinzok.com/Hello,while selling a car, I had to make a lot of time to schedule all the test drives for people interested in my offering. This is not easy with a full time job!So I heard that in Singapore, Hyundai made a trial platform that allows users to test drive vehicles in a contactless manner, including keyless entry via web API and more.Since I could not find a replica of such a service in my country, I set out to do my own version and hence my platform twinzok.com was born.It allows people to list their vehicle and offer test drives and viewings at any time. Only people that have a verified license can drive. Just like online rental services. This solves my time problem as I do not have to be present during the viewings and drives anymore.Right now the service is a in trial phase but the main components are working.I wanted to know what you think of this idea and whether you see any use in it.Thank you for your attention!

Show HN: Using Google Sheets to manage localization strings across platformshttps://localeasy.deno.devAs an app developer, I noticed that smaller teams frequently run into the hassles of managing translation strings across iOS, Android and web, and keeping them in sync and up to date.To make this a little easier I've been working on a small utility that allows you to use Google Sheets to manage these translations. Perfect for small teams that do not need any of the advanced features that paid platforms offer, but still want to have an easy to use centralised place to edit these strings.Without creating any account or whatsoever, you can use the Localeasy endpoint to convert your sheet into translations files for multiple platforms: iOS/macOS, Android, Rails, JSON, or YAML.I would love to hear your feedback!

Show HN: I've built a C# IDE, Runtime, and AppStore inside Excelhttps://querystorm.com/csharp-in-excel/The project is called QueryStorm. It uses Roslyn to offer C# (and VB.NET) support in Excel, as an alternative to VBA. I've posted about it before, but a lot has changed since then so figured I'd share an update. The current version includes a host of new features, namely a C# debugger, support for NuGet packages, and the ability to publish Excel extensions to an "AppStore" (which is essentially a NuGet repository). The AppStore can be used by anyone with the (free) runtime component.Another great addition is the community license, which is a free license for individuals and small companies to use. It unlocks most features, but it isn't intended for companies with more than 5 employees or over $1M in annual revenue.I would love to hear your feedback and am happy to answer any technical questions about how QueryStorm is implemented.

Tell HN: From bartending to managing cloud infrastructurehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34460997Someone on HN once recommended I share this story, and I've been seeing a lot of "how do I get into tech in my 30s" and "can I switch careers" posts, so I figured I'd post.----I'm 37. I spent my twenties bouncing all over the place; did a stint in the Army Reserves while shooting for liutenant bars that didn't work out (failed out of college and I was in ROTC). Did construction, real estate, grew weed in Denver for a year (legally), ended up bartending for roughly a decade. It was great in my early 20s. Not so hot to watch my age group get raises and salary increases.I have my GED and never finished college - left with a record-setting 1.2 GPA (I have severe ADD and I wasn't properly medicated, there were other problems too). Seemed like there was this universe of 'good jobs' that were simply not in the cards. So there I am, in my early 30s, struggling to make NY rent and watching folks get promoted and getting married and buying houses and all that stuff. I was lucky enough to have fri

Could a Computer Take Over? Robert Silverberghttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34424626This discussion is not new. Quoting from Byte Magazine (Feb 1976 p77):The first man to use a machine was the first of our primitive ancestors who picked up a rock to hurl at some passing animal or to crack open some edible nut. In the million-plus years since then, our machines have grown much more complex, but even in our modern era of computers, ... their basic purpose remains the same: to serve man.Whether our machines truly serve us is a question much debated by science-fiction writers and other professional speculative philosophers. Does some essential quality go out of human life when it becomes too easy? Have our automobiles, telephones, typewriters and elevators sapped our vigor? Are we speeding into flabby decay because we have made things too easy for ourselves? And as our machines grow more able, when do they cross the boundary that separates the living from the unliving? Is it possible that we are building machines that will make humanity obsolete? Perhaps the day is coming
