Ask HN: How Are Brick and Mortar Stores Retargeting Online?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13063948I thought this was just a coincidence the first time it happened, but I've had enough "coincidences" in a row now to see that it's deliberate.I've been buying things at physical locations (i.e. grocery store, walgreens, etc.) and then seeing an add for that exact thing on Instagram in my feed. The same thing happens to my fiancé and, tbh, it's kind of pushing the realm of privacy in my book.I understand that if I buy something online or on my iPhone, I'll most likely be retargeted somewhere else online. But, this is a physical store, where I physically pick something up and hand it to a person and bear through small talk while they ring me up.The only connection I can make is the email address linked to my credit card is the same one on my Instagram account - but that would also mean Instagram (Facebook) is providing access at a low enough level to allow the ad network to know my email address. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Ask HN: Do you find writing plumbing code for SaaS painful?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12951867Used to run a few different SaaS but the plumbing code relating to integrating Stripe, user authentication, billing management for customer all quickly adds up to non-product related coding which now adds friction to your testing & deployment lifecycle.I don't know, has this been the case for any of you out there?Would there be value in being able to quickly deploy different SaaS ideas by bootstrapping it with a SaaS website hosted on the cloud that will be completely taken off your hands? All you'd have to do is point to your core product running on your own deployment and interact with potentially a service that will give you drop in Access Control?I know security is paramount here but also feel like there should be minimal friction in retrofitting SaaS functionality to your web app. Stripe removes the need to store any of your customer's sensitive data on my end which would require PCI compliance. It's the classic build vs buy, and I'm curious to know if anything hits home for those w

Ask HN: Buying a business to use as an ad vehiclehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12653717Situation:Let's say you’re a startup that is ready to publicly launch a new web service. You could spend $633k in advertising (print, online banners, search engine placement, etc.) or you could buy a business with a product already inside your target customers.Example Business background:The pre-existing business mentioned above is a decade old with customers like Airbus, John Deere, etc., government agencies, universities, small law offices, small businesses, and soccer moms. Customers spend anywhere from $20 to $20k. One product in particular could be made free and millions of downloads a year would be the end result. This "free" product could be a message proxy for your new web service.Question:What is good way to calculate that buying the above business to use its products, website, and SEO as an ad or awareness engine is better for your brand and message? How would you go about proving that this path (mathematically) is more sound than traditional means?
