Show HN: Silent Shark – tactical map-based WWII submarine simhttps://silentshark.app/I posted an early beta of this game a few months ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48180924 - May 2026 (45 comments) and today released the full version. You all gave extremely valuable and helpful feedback back then - thank you so much for that. It led to a lot of improvements:* I reworked the onboarding tutorials multiple times for clarity, adding protections to stop players from shooting themselves in the foot* I dropped the Comic Sans-reminiscent font and replaced it with Barlow Condensed* I improved the layout of the dials for all screen sizes to keep players on top of things* I added an "Angle-on-Bow recognition trainer" for practicing estimates of ship anglesFor the full version, I fleshed out a full campaign with radio intelligence, patrol zones, and lots of historical events impacting things like which naval bases still exist, which types of missions are given, and how reliable your torpedoes are. (And just for fun, I added a full cribbage mini-game as well!)Now, just mAug 12, 2026 7:37 PM

Show HN: Hallucinote, integrating Ableton and Claude Codehttps://github.com/brookstalley/hallucinoteHey HN!This is the first public release of Hallucinote, an integration of Claude Code and Ableton Live. Hallucinote helps with the entire lifecycle of songwriting, including ideation, instrumentation, harmony, rhythm (including microtiming), arrangement, mixing, and production.Hallucinote is focused on assisting songwriting, not doing it for you. Key features:- Git-first representation of songs, using Ableton as an audio rendering and performance capture surface- A decision log for each song, covering all aspects of songwriting and music production- Composition skills adhere to the song’s decision log and write with micro-timing and other niceties- Support for meter changes, polymeter, and alternate tunings- Skills to critique melody, harmony, and rhythm against your stated goals (NOT “is this a good melody in the abstract”)- Round trip: perform MIDI tracks in Live, pull down into Hallucinote for embellishment, push back to Live (no audio track round trips yet)- Captures every track anAug 12, 2026 12:07 PM

Launch HN: Discovered Materials (YC P26) – AI agents to discover new materialshttps://discoveredmaterials.com/research/Hey HN, we're Advaith and Akash from Discovered Materials ( https://discoveredmaterials.com/ ). We build AI agents that discover new materials for the semiconductor industry.GPUs today have a heat problem. Nvidia & AMD are almost doubling the TDP (Thermal Design Power) in every chip they release - the H100 (released 2022) has a TDP of 700W, Blackwell (2024) gives out 1.2 kW and Rubin (2026) gives out at 2.3 kW of heat. This trend is expected to continue, and getting rid of this heat is one of the major reasons datacenters consume so much power and water today - they need it to keep chips cool during operation. The amount of heat produced by a chip and its ability to dissipate it are both influenced by the materials used to make it. For example, we could reduce the energy per bit required to move data between logic and memory by 10-50x by 3D packaging chips (placing HBM memory stacks directly on top of logic chips, instead of placing them beside logic on a 2D circuit board). However, we'Aug 12, 2026 7:51 AM

Show HN: Kernelspace- interactive course on systems programming for LLM Servinghttps://kernelspace.naigap.com/Hi HN,*I* built kernelspace - a free and interactive course that takes a backend engineer (like me) with java/python experience to the systems level required to work on LLM serving at scale. (Mostly an attempt for me to understand what everyone's talking about lately and also an attempt at staying up to date to current tech - career wise). It has: 1. 68 Lessons across 9 tracks, with a rust-from-zero ramp. 2. 8 rust labs - BPE tokenizer, KV block manager, radix cache, batching scheduler, a toy executor 3. 9 simulators running in browser (wasm) - roofline model, KV cache pressure, continuous batching dynamics 4. Fleet week - a simulated prod serving fleetAll progresss is local - there is no server (it's served from github pages, repo here https://github.com/praveer13/kernelspace)Feedback appreciated, and contributions welcome. I want to make this a really good course for me (and everyone else like me).* (OK, I had sol and kimi on it for most part)Aug 12, 2026 1:20 AM

Show HN: Advect – autodiff for NumPy and Array API programshttps://yaugenst.github.io/advect/0.1.0/playground/I built Advect, an automatic differentiation library for scientific Python. It provides broad NumPy API coverage, follows the Python Array API standard, and works with ordinary Python functions. In addition to dynamic differentiation, Advect can stage a function into a reusable program that can be optimized, differentiated again, serialized, and loaded later. There is also some support for SciPy, xarray, and interoperability with other autodiff frameworks. The linked playground runs entirely in the browser through Pyodide, so you can try tracing and differentiating an expression without installing anything. The first public release is available with pip install advect.Source: https://github.com/yaugenst/advectAug 11, 2026 7:12 PM

Ask HN: Can trivial LLM calls be compiled into conventional data pipelines?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49199957We are investigating whether recurring LLM workloads can be replaced, where appropriate, by automatically constructed pipelines of regexes, deterministic parsers, traditional ML and NLP models. As an example, suppose an application repeatedly asks a frontier model to read an annual report and return all customer–supplier relationships as structured records containing a customer, supplier, and supporting evidence.A possible replacement pipeline might run named-entity recognition, entity normalization, candidate generation, entity linking, relation extraction, and schema validation. A calibrated uncertainty or out-of-distribution gate would use the pipeline for inputs inside its validated domain and escalate other cases to the original frontier model.NER → entity normalization → candidate generation → entity linking → relation extraction → schema validationOur current action space is a taxonomy of 41 atomic task types spanning classification, token and span labeling, structured extractionAug 6, 2026 5:48 PM

Do You Think OpenAI Is Apple Circa the 1980s?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49178393OpenAI is a deeply mismanaged company. Most recently, a blog post that feels like it has got to have dozens of PR violations, responding to the Apple lawsuit.More broadly, OpenAI’s main problem is that it does not have a real competitive advantage. No real models do; the real differentiation is price; they will become commodities. The need to move upwards in the market in enterprise software is difficult since the current stack should remain the same, since sticking with Salesforce plus its new AI features is much simpler than the cost of switching to an AI-first startup version, which won’t be around 3 to 5 years from now. So consumer hardware and trying to become the next Apple could work, except you would likely have to focus on people not in the Apple ecosystem because of the double-sided lock-in Apple has.The opposite dynamic works in consumer and mobile, really. Apple with AI is a much worse experience than something AI-first built from the ground up. Especially considering the cAug 5, 2026 3:50 AM
