I know all about designing star/snowflake/EAV schemas across dozens of db dialects (be that BigQuery, Redshift, Vertica, etc). I have performed dozens of implementations of Facebook/Google/Segment/(you name it) analytical funnels.All of the above is great when I am approached to architect analytics for yet another e-commerce start-up or a young SaaS business. I am starting to feel like 50%-80% of the work is repeatable (albeit, still requires custom modeling/SQL/ETL).The problem I keep running into is the other 50%/20%. And that is the stuff I feel that actually makes companies money.Some say that Data Science is the answer, but from my personal experience with a Data Science gig back in 2013, I beg to differ. We poured all our knowledge and experience into a taxi app called vToms (targeted at authorised taxi and private hire only, not the general public with flimsy or no insurance). We are offering it right now to drivers for free while we are on out last stages of beta testing and hopefully build a user base while we added features. Once beta is over, we will charge a small fixed fee for the drivers using vToms, never a percentage of their earnings, vToms passenger app will always be free to use, the passenger pays the driver directly at the end of the hire. I have been promoting through facebook, twitter and linkedIn, among others social networks without much success. We have the android version running now for a year and the iOS version has just been submitted for preview. We loved XMPP for it's extensibility and the protocol completely mimics XMPP - chat, chatstates, client-state indiciation.Just the namespaces are replaced by MQTT topics and with wildcards clients are really lightweight.Advantages: 1. Streaming Binary instead XML (XMPP have exi so it can be fixed). 2. Super easy to implement. Just took us a day to implement to port most of the functionality from XMPP. 3. Just like XMPP it's infinitely extendible. Wanted to add a new packet type is just adding a provider and registering it to manager (to all those who worked with Smack - will feel at home). 4. I was able to work about $2k, a comfortable position while I decide what my next move is.Said invoice remains unpaid. I'm now a debt collector. There are options to consolidate, but the amount is in excess of $25k which makes things difficult. I do have contracts in place, and counsel I can lean on, but it’s an incredibly exhausting and lengthy process. As a 24-year-old dev-shop founder I have learned my lesson. I'll require pre-paid invoices from here on. There’s more to the story, but in short, I've wound things down after my co-founder (design/sales) unexpectedly left us in early Q2 2015.The response was overwhelming.
