Tech as hopeful – beyond the honeymoon phase?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23573560I want to explore revisiting the augmentative capacities of the web and ways in how we can help each other help ourselves be the Le Guinian "children who have survived" - i.e., creative adults. I'm writing a book on networked learning but it won't be complete if I don't at least try to reach out directly to those in the industry (this, as opposed to only including passive bibliographic references). Also, a great trend in academe is co-creation, which I seek to make space for in all I do. I am so grateful to so much tech - and hope that by raising this question I am returning to tech a space for relaxed reflection.((If an additional prompt is needed, if I were to submit a point for ‘talking therapy’, I’d ask about “boundary issues” that threaten a healthy hopeful relation to tech. Wondering if there are any other developments in this area, especially with reference to desktop hardware.In terms of recommendations: looking for some sort of offline speech engine that can handle multi-lingual seamlessly i.e. English/Chinese.Current setup: IVONA (stopped development after being acquired by Amazon) which sounds pretty natural, but skips non foreign characters. It works in Balabolka which has regular expression support to filter out cruft. Great workflow when TTS is triggered by clipboard.

Despite loving my work from home days, I couldn't help but notice that I was closer to my co-workers I saw in person than the ones I interacted with remotely.For the most part this was minor, but important, interactions. The banter when we first came into the office, lunches taken together more often, and a general awareness of what they were focused on. On the other hand, it was harder to setup social time with my remote teammates (I didn't want to ping and interrupt them) and the context I had about what they were currently working on was often based on signals that got piped into slack in the form of jira, zendesk, or sales bot messages.
