Ask HN: Time to Pivot Out of Engineering?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44575810I’m looking for a new job and I’m not sure if I should even keep applying to SWE roles or not. Looking back on the 6 years I’ve been working as a SWE, I’ve always ended up in a position where I was pretty miserable after a couple years no matter what company I was working for at the time. I’m annoyed at all the process, I’m annoyed with the people, I’m not interested in what the company is doing, and it just feels like such a grind.Earlier on, I thought that this was just a symptom of not liking the product, culture, or just getting bored of what I was working on at the time and could be fixed by going to a different company. But now after working at 3 different companies of slightly different sizes, I’m starting to think that maybe I just don’t enjoy this field as much as I thought I would.I’m definitely not a 10x engineer who is constantly cranking out code, and if I’m being honest with myself I am just a slightly above average engineer. I’m good enough to do the tasks that are neede

Ask HN: How to attract top engineers as an early-stage startup?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44574896Finding great engineers is a known challenge for every early-stage startup as you need to find missionaries willing to trade cash for risk and upside. What we try: - We try to leverage personal networks, which seems like the best source (10x better than other methods)- We're willing to poach talent (when timing aligns)- We're generous with equity (can’t match FAANG cash)Public job boards didn't work at all. About 98 % of applicants are spray-and-pray. We even added a product-specific question at the end of the ad and only few noticed it (but good filter!).I also know that experience ≠ talent and that some people are terrible at selling themselves, I try to spot these. What helped you find top engineers?

Titan is the only world apart from Earth that is known to have liquid on its surface. However, Titan’s lakes and seas are not filled with water. Instead, they contain liquid hydrocarbons like ethane and methane. […]

App/Web for finding friends and like-minded people, which works?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44558257After 30+ years of feeling lonely, I've been thinking about what's missing. Yes, there are apps for meeting people—Meetup, Bumble BFF, and others. But they don't quite capture what I'm searching for: a space to find people who share our passions, our curiosities, a desire to build RC aircraft or to have that Harry Potter marathon we've been putting off.I'm searching for (or dreaming of building) a platform that:Puts community over profit — No subscription tiers hiding basic features. No algorithms designed to keep you scrolling instead of connecting. A place where you can message interesting people instantly without hitting 3-messages-per-day limits (you don't have limits saying "hello" to people on the street, right?). You can search for people by location, interests, etc. without limits!Connects through shared purpose — Find people who want to collaborate on projects, learn together, or simply share genuine interests. Not just "swipe right if you like hiking."Builds lasting relations

You can’t judge a star by its protoplanetary dischttps://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2025/05/You_can_t_judge_a_star_by_its_protoplanetary_discThis image tells the story of redemption for one lonely star. The young star MP Mus (PDS 66) was thought to be all alone in the Universe, surrounded by nothing but a featureless band of gas and dust called a protoplanetary disc. In most cases, the material inside a protoplanetary disc condenses to form new planets around the star, leaving large gaps where the gas and dust used to be. These features are seen in almost every disc – but not in MP Mus’s.

Show HN: Sohri – Turn short stories into binge-able audio episodeshttps://sohri.ai/exploreHey HN, I love creating, and I've been fascinated by AI audio tools. But as a creator, trying to actually use them felt like a trap.First, wrestling with raw TTS APIs to create something that doesn't sound like a robot reading a phone book is an art form in itself. It takes forever to get the pacing and tone right.Second, and this was the real deal-breaker: even if you create a masterpiece, platforms like YouTube feel like they're just waiting to demonetize you or slap a restriction on your work because it's "AI-generated." It feels like you're building on someone else's land, and they can change the rules overnight. It's soul-crushing.I wanted a sanctuary for audio creators. A place that’s more like a recording studio in your pocket than a frustrating API wrapper. A platform where you can focus on your story, not on fighting the tools or the distribution algorithm. So, I built Sohri (https://sohri.ai). Sohri is designed to turn your short stories into polished, binge-able audio episode

Show HN: FluidAudio – Swift Speaker Diarization on CoreMLhttps://github.com/FluidInference/FluidAudioWe needed a speaker diarization solution that could run every few seconds alongside transcription on iOS and macOS. But native Swift support was either limited or locked behind paid licenses. Since diarization is a common need in speech-to-text workflows, we decided to open source our work and give back to the community. We initially tried sherpa-onnx, which works, but running both diarization and transcription models slowed down older devices. CPU-only inference just isn’t ideal for near real-time workloads, so we wanted the option to offload segmentation and speaker embedding to the GPU or ANE. Supporting M1 Macs in particular meant pushing more of the workload to the ANE.Instead of shoehorning the ONNX model into CoreML with C++, we converted the original PyTorch models directly to CoreML. This approach required some monkey-patching in the PyTorch and pyannote code, but the initial benchmarks look promising. We’d love feedback! We're currently working on adding VAD and integrating Par

I may be beyond redemptionhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44541929I am ashamed to even type all of this...again. I have had a few rants before on HN and reddit. It seems like I cannot improve or get better at all, I have been stuck literally doing nothing for a decade, like literally, I am not even kidding. My parents are great people, great is an understatement, I had a great upbringing, hard work and academics was always emphasized. I didn't do shit though, just daydreamed about it.I have been interested in tech for a looong time but I would just read about it, daydream about using it for awesome purposes, maybe try to learn it a bit and it would seem too hard and I would think, "eh I will start tomorrow" and go consume something that provided instant gratification. Years literally passed, and that never happened. I got through middle and high school because my parents literally dragged me through it, got a degree from a degree mill, again because of my parents all this while daydreaming and deep in delusions about how I was gonna learn a lot and get

ML researchers, let's solve hardware engineeringhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44541074Hello HN, I'm talking to ML researchers here, There is a pretty challenging yet unexplored problem in ML yet - hardware engineering. So far, everything goes against us solving this problem - pretrain data is basically inexistent (no abundance like in NLP/computer vision), there are fundamental gaps in research in the area - e.g. there is no way to encode engineering-level physics information into neural nets (no specialty VAEs/transformers oriented for it), simulating engineering solutions was very expensive up until recently (there are 2024 GPU-run simulators which run 100-1000x faster than anything before them), and on top of it it’s a domain-knowledge heavy ML task.I’ve fell in love with the problem a few months ago, and I do believe that now is the time to solve this problem. The data scarcity problem is solvable via RL - there were recent advancements in RL that make it stable on smaller training data (see SimbaV2/BROnet), engineering-level simulation can be done via PINOs (Physics
