Design a business model for an algorithmically free content consumption platformSo I’ve been thinking more about this idea of an algorithmically free content consumption platform.Consider this,Today, big tech companies are too fixated on algorithmically driven [everything]. Which has its limits. For instance, I remember way back in the good old days there was this AI themed YouTube channel based on crappy TTS synthesis which kinda worked, but then YouTube cracked down on TTS (at least the blatantly obvious ones), forcing this channel to move to a more realistic voice that kinda killed the whole theme of the channel.I suspect this would have demonetized or completely de-platformed Stephen hawking as well in some alternate universe where he became a YouTuber. While on the opposite side of the spectrum, one can make an argument that online platforms are failing to filter out undesirable, low quality and low effort content, among other things. In a way it’s like an arms race, and at a fundamental level, with regard to algorithmically driven content recommendation and mod

Ask HN: Should we start a discussion about the DSA?Under the Digital Services Act platforms are forced to comply with removal requests for content which is deemed in violation of the regulation.According to the "DSA Transparency Database"[1], approximately 1.2 million pieces of content are removed daily (at least in terms of their visibility inside the EU) because they fall into the category of "Illegal or harmful speech", the reason being "online services are being misused by manipulative algorithmic systems to amplify the spread of disinformation"[2].Ironically, algorithms are heavily used to perform automated decision-making on the type of content that is being removed. Platforms are subject to heavy fines for not complying (so it's better to remove more stuff than otherwise), and there's no transparency in the process. What's the content that is actually removed? A couple of people I occasionally watch on YouTube have had their content removed and/or their channel demonetized under the DSA for completely fine content (expressing opi

Show HN: Closed my startup & spent $30K to bring payments to Project Management!Hi HN,It was really hard to get paid for our service work. There was always the pain of delay, uncertainty and the stress it brought to our operations in our bootstrapped service business. The bigger pain was the embarrassment of following up on an invoice. After trying all the 'expert advice' on getting invoices cleared on time without any good outcome, we thought of fixing it.The idea is to let service providers tag each task on the project management board with a monetary value, and we get money in our account instantly after the task is approved by the client. This way, every task becomes a tiny invoice payable after approval. Sort of like an escrow (that the client pre-funds), but for micro-transactions.This sort of brings work and payment into one workflow rather than treating them as two divergent processes. This was fun to build and fun to test. Experiencing the high of seeing money in the account instantly once some work was done was crazy. We have like $700,000 worth of transact

Show HN: Voyage – Toolbox of otherwise expensive SaaS marketing toolsVoyage is a bunch of marketing tools for SaaS in one platform. We're betting on three things:1. Many marketing tools don't offer free tiers. Think Optimizely, 6sense, Mutiny, Typeform, Qualified, Marketo, Drift, etc. A lot of these have minimum contract sizes of 5 figures. Voyage is completely free right now (haven't shipped monetization yet) and will always be usage-based + free tier.2. Having these tools in one place compounds. We offer global themes for all of the user-facing marketing assets, which means you won't have to manage a brand theme for each of Wistia, Drift, etc. We also can use the data from one tool to modify another. Ex: personalize the header of the pricing page based on whether a visitor went through the video on your splash page.3. We can outship most engineering teams in the long term. It's difficult for mar-tech companies to attract/retain talent since they're GTM-first, not eng-first. We're building an eng-first mar-tech company, getting into teams early with a g

Show HN: Traveler's currency conversion based on location (iOS)Hey! I made (yet another) currency conversion app. It has some extra features I find useful for my traveling.Currently it's iOS only (I've ended up going with SwiftUI and focusing on Apple's eco-system, mostly because their locale API was great with currencies and their reverse geolocation is simple and reliable)Features: - I uses device locale to try and set your "home" currency. - When abroad (home != foreign), it uses location to set the "foreign" currency.- Tax: Living outside of north-america, I find "tax exclusive" tricky. So, it provides rough estimation of sale taxes based on your location. (I expect this feature to require more tweaking in the US with counties name might differ between geolocation services and my json database)- Tipping: based on many sources I've composed a simplified global tipping customs json. I guess it's a mixed bag but it should be in the ballpark for the most common scenarios (dining, taxing, staying).Monetization: - It's free with banner ads on curren

Help HN: Adwords Accounts Closed by GoogleHey HN. Posting this here in the hope that someone who can help sees this. This is a pretty long post detailing my experience, but TL;DR is I have 2 adwords accounts closed for 2 businesses. One that was dormant for 5-7 years (with ZERO use since then) and another one I opened for another of my companies (linked to my Youtube channel). I cannot appeal as I get a canned response back "can't take any further actions" due to me apparently entering in details incorrectly.--- I had to cut it a bit shorter ---In the first quarter of 2023 my Youtube channel began to approach the minimums for monetization after a few live streams.I logged into my adwords account #1 and saw my details were slightly dated, I updated the banking details and company address as we had recently moved to a busines center and we prefer a different bank to the one originally used. The adwords account is maybe 15+ years old and HAS NOT been used in at least 7 years or so.I was prompted regarding reactivating the account

Show HN: Melo Rhythm – A Piano Teacher's Take on Music Dictation AppHello Hacker News community! I'm excited to showcase my latest project, Melo Rhythm. Melo Rhythm is a unique blend of my musical expertise and my passion for coding. It's built primarily in JavaScript (abcjs, tonaljs, threejs, react), wrapped in React Native for a seamless mobile experience, and uses Keycloak for secure Single Sign-On functionality. The backend is a straightforward ExpressJS setup, focusing on efficiency and scalability, primarily used only for storing and syncing progress. The app is offline-first, meaning that, for example, on mobile, once you log in, you can use it in flight mode, but once online, it syncs your progress across devices. For monetization, I'm using subscriptions, and the App is already available on Google Play. If the Android version of the mobile part of the app gains some traction, I'll release it for the App Store as well.I was motivated by the fact that I could not find a music dictation app that would combine rhythm and melody dictation into melo-rh

Ask HN: Feeling disillusioned. Am I overly moralizing Tech?Tech Twitter is ablaze with hype around a new crypto app that lets you monetize relationships. Much of the excitement by builders & VCs explicitly hand-waves away the obvious and self-admitted ponzinomics for the sake of social experimentation.Watching this play out has peaked my long emerging disillusionment with Tech. When billions are poured into subsidizing the engineering of addiction under the guise of growth, when VR is being pushed as a way to unironically help us connect more immersively, when the crypto intelligentsia continues to wantonly deploy financial mechanisms that almost universally enrich insiders under the guise of economic liberation, and everyone seems obsessed with joining the club at all costs… how are you meant to remain hopeful for tech’s societal impact?Or am I just overly moralizing this?
