Show HN: Realistic procedural fire effect via naive algorithmhttps://fx.leftium.com/fire-plasmaSource code: https://github.com/Leftium/fx/blob/main/src/routes/fire-plas...I made this naive fire effect as realistic as possible; arguably more realistic than some simulations based on real fire fluid dynamics[1]. The naive algorithm uses a kernel to simulate convection, diffusion, and cooling of heat. Described in more detail by Joakim Hårsman[2]. Also see working demo of the OG fire algorithm by Justin Greisiger Frost[3]While canvas + CPU gets surprisingly good performance, this effect would probably run much faster on the GPU. On mobile, this version is sized to work better: https://fx.leftium.com/fire-plasma?standardSize=0&text=LeIn my improved version, flames "lick" the bottom of the floating text. This is my favorite part. It was totally unexpected and just emerged from the algorithm. Compare to Joakim's version by changing the text: https://fx.leftium.com/fire-plasma?text=%E2%97%AFMajor improvements over prior art:- True-color fire gradient/palette with transparency looks dece

Show HN: NoSuggest – Watch YouTube without the recommendation algorithmhttps://www.nosuggest.com/NoSuggest is a quiet act of resistance against YouTube algorithms always trying to pull you into a loop of unlimited videos in turn into unlimited screen time. With unending side cards of videos, auto-play, what's next suggestions, YouTube shorts and notifications, users will be doom scrolling for many hours in a day.I faced the same problem. Acknowledging that, not all content in YouTube is bad. There are educational videos, genuine news contents without political bias which is very hard to find outside YouTube and many other good relaxing, entertainment stuff.NoSuggest lets you only follow the YouTube channels you like and removes all types of recommendation YouTube has. So you don't waste time on watching things which you never wanted to watch anyways.UI is very simple. You add your favourite channels in "Channels" tab and latest 5 videos per channel excluding shorts would appear in "Feed" tab. "Search" tab is to search for specific videos to watch and "Saved" tab is to bookmark any

Claude Code vs. Codexhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48388550I have been a long time user of Claude Code. I never felt the need to try other coding tools, and the times I did, I always came back. Across many projects, personal and professional, Claude has been my pair programmer. I have enough experience across generations of Claude models that, just by looking at the output, I can tell when a model switch has happened, strictly in the context of coding tasks. I have noticed models lean on some aspects heavily like bullet points or emojis or markdown tables or ascii diagrams or just a walls of text (4.8). Following the Claude Code 4.7 and 4.8 releases, the performance is immensely worse. Here is how I qualify "worse":1. Coding tasks: they don't follow instructions at all. They consistently miss close to a quarter of the ask, which cascades into bloat over time. 2. Reviewing existing code: they literally fail to read the code or use the tools properly. Both of these have, in my opinion, eroded the time saving value of the tool. Hard opinion: real

SpectraLoRA: GNN -> Ramanhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48383872Arcadia Science just dropped SpectraLoRA: they take the pretrained 22.5M-param DetaNet equivariant GNN and lightly post-train it with SO(3)-equivariant LoRA (AdaLoRA on invariant layers + ELoRA on tensor products) to predict Hessians, vibrational frequencies, and full Raman spectra straight from 3D atomic coords. Trained on ~2M molecules (QM9, SPICE, etc.), it already hits 60% fingerprint coverage at DFT-level accuracy zero-shot on out-of-distribution drug-like stuff. Then they close the sim-to-real gap with a two-stage alignment trick: a 1D U-Net (FiLM-conditioned on Morgan fingerprints) + Natural Evolution Strategies optimizing a non-differentiable F1 score. Jumps experimental fingerprint F1@15 from 0.426 → 0.532 on their RamanBiolib set. Code + Colab demo are open-source: https://github.com/Arcadia-Science/spectralora-molecular-alignment Paper: https://doi.org/10.57844/arcadia-kn60-kxsk This feels like the kind of lightweight adaptation + clever alignment hack that could actually ma

nano.rs
Show HN: Nano – open core siem built on rust and ClickHousehttps://nano.rs/Hi HN,I’m Dan Lussier & I built a SIEM named nano. The platform took around 6 months to be fully featured (and tested, and security scanned.. many times over). I’ve been working in information security for over 20 years, and even if it sounds redundant, I always found major SIEM providers to 1, be insanely expensive and 2, often have issues (outages, inability to scale properly and still have strong capabilities / fast searches).Around December (2025), I started down the path of creating nano, at first I was reading about some research around some new extensions released for Postgres (I’ve been using it for over a decade for various projects, so I was intrigued). So, I started creating the SIEM, I got about a week into it and realized even with the new extensions, Postgres will just not scale for SIEM-like workloads (I already knew this overall for standard psql, but the extensions added some really cool keyword concepts for speed). After that I started digging in and found Clickhouse

andrej-karpathy.com
Show HN: A self-growing wiki of Andrej Karpathy's public workhttps://andrej-karpathy.com/I created one simple place to consolidate all of Karpathy's stuff, like his essays, courses and GitHub projects. You can browse it like a normal wiki, or ask it a question. Every answer cites the underlying source and gets saved as context graph that can build a new page, so asking a question is the same as editing the wiki. I made it very strict about citations. Claims have to point at a real source file or the linter complains. I think it feels closer to Wikipedia than to a chatbot. This project is not affiliated with Andrej and all material is public. The engine I created is a template, so you can point it at any topic and build your own wiki.

Reading about surveillance: best place to live?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48382586Read HN post this morning detailing all the surveillance in Seattle. This begs a broader question: are certain areas in the U.S. freer of surveillance than others. Cottages by lakes (less surveillance coming from the water), college towns, big cities but don't drive, small towns, Upper Peninsula Michigan, middle of farmland, next to the Amish? Any practical ideas.
