Show HN: Machinations – a multiplayer strategy game where LLM is the game masterhttps://machinations.tpk.gg/I started by thinking about the game mechanics I actually wanted to see. I come from a long background in diceless tabletop RPGs, and what I loved about them was the GM improvising, making rulings on the spot. When LLMs came along, I saw a chance to build a mechanic that worked like that. But LLMs on their own are bad at it. They regress toward the mean and they try too hard to please the player. Nobody ever really fails. So I built a system (I won't name it, I'm not here to self-promote) around a 3d10 bell curve of outcomes. The dice decide how well an attempt goes, across a whole spread of grades from disastrous to legendary, and the LLM has to narrate whatever the dice say. That forces it to produce results the player won't like, which is where the drama comes from. With that in hand, I could resolve any conflict narratively. Two characters chasing the same goal, one trying to kill or rob the other, whatever. The roll leans the story in one direction or the other. Then I realized I ne

Show HN: PMG, open source package firewallhttps://github.com/safedep/pmgHi HNI am the founder of SafeDep. We have been detecting malicious packages for a while. Coming from DevSecOps background, I always considered malicious package detection & protection to be a build stage problem. But I was wrong since the S1ngularity and early Shai-Hulud days.In 2026, we pretty much started worrying more about our own dev machines than CI/CD environment. Depending only on threat intelligence data (OSV / SafeDep / Socket / any other source) to protect our own dev machines did not feel right. We wanted to build a multi-layered protection that can get 100% visibility of OSS packages coming in, and can protect against known and “hopefully” unknown threats. That’s how Package Manager Guard (PMG) started. Core idea was simple:- Start a local proxy (localhost)- Make sure supported package managers like npm, pnpm, pip etc. goes through it- Use threat intelligence data to fail fast on known malicious packages- Apply policies like dependency cooldown as additional guardrails- Ad

Show HN: An MCP server that turns async-work practices into toolshttps://github.com/open-and-async/mcpMore than a decade ago, I adopted the self-imposed rule, if I answer a question more than once, the third time I need to be able to answer with a URL. Today, I published one very large URL - a book distilling what I learned from helping people work remotely at GitHub, and I wanted to rethink my rule for the age of AI.What if, instead of a URL, I could create an interactive experience that could tailor the guidance to your particular situation? What I ended up building was an Open and Async Advisor MCP server. To install (in claude or any other AI):> claude mcp add open-async -- npx -y @open-and-async/mcpTransparently, yes, it's from a book I wrote which launched today, but the MCP server is open source and free to use. No purchase required. It knows the key principles of the book, and has specialized tools like `draft_decision_doc`, `convert_meeting_to_async`, `score_status_update`, `triage_sync_vs_async`.This is an experiment for me, and I'm genuinely curious if it's helpful for others

Mapping Alien Continents: Achieving Optical VLBI for Exoplanet Imaginghttps://www.nasa.gov/directorates/stmd/mapping-alien-continents-achieving-optical-vlbi-for-exoplanet-imaging/Paul StankusBrookhaven Science Associates The scientific goal of the proposed work will be reconstructing the image, ie resolving surface features, of an Earth-like exoplanet around a nearby star as seen in visible light. The innovation is in two stages. First, the design of a new kind of nulling interferometer — “dynamic hierarchical nulling” — combining inputs […]

Interworld Slingshot Resource Surveyshttps://www.nasa.gov/directorates/stmd/niac/niac-studies/interworld-slingshot-resource-surveys/Pablo SobronSETI Institute This proposal explores a new class of reconnaissance spacecraft that map minerals from orbit using Raman spectroscopy during high-speed flybys–without landing, sample return, or extended dwell. If feasible, this concept would enable NASA to evaluate ice and ilmenite at the Moon, ore content at asteroids, and volatile-bearing minerals at Mars’ moons–all with a […]

Robotically Assembled Electromagnetic Metamaterials for Long-Range Space Situational Awarenesshttps://www.nasa.gov/directorates/stmd/niac/robotically-assembled-electromagnetic-metamaterials-for-long-range-space-situational-awareness/David SmithDuke University The increasing population of spacefaring vehicles and satellites motivates increasingly powerful technologies for space situational awareness (SSA). While the US space surveillance network (SSN) is able to monitor objects down to about four inches in size using, for example, the latest upgrade to the space fence, the associated requirements limit implementation to ground-based […]

Actively Steerable Femtosat Constellations for In-situ Exploration of Saturn’s Rings, Atmosphere, and Magnetospherehttps://www.nasa.gov/directorates/stmd/niac/actively-steerable-femtosat-constellations-for-in-situ-exploration-of-saturns-rings-atmosphere-and-magnetosphere/Michael RubensteinNorthwestern University, Chicago We propose a mission to use ~10,000 actively steerable femtosats to map the ring composition, atmospheric composition and density, and the magnetic field distribution of Saturn. Conducting in-situ surveys of Saturn’s rings with a single flagship mission, such as Cassini, would carry an unacceptably high risk of mission failure due to […]

ECLIPSE – Efficient variable Conductivity Lunar Insulator for Passive Surveyor Environmental controlhttps://www.nasa.gov/directorates/stmd/niac/eclipse-efficient-variable-conductivity-lunar-insulator-for-passive-surveyor-environmental-control/Austin Phoenix Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State A disaggregated lunar infrastructure requires novel thermal management methods to enable future lunar operations. While thermal management solutions exist for large infrastructure, the smaller mobile systems that operate independently require improved temperature regulation devices that can survive without heaters or substantial power requirements, while limiting stress-inducing temperature fluctuations. Establishing Crew Exposure Limits of Martian Dusthttps://www.nasa.gov/general/establishing-crew-exposure-limits-of-martian-dust/Background Human exploration of Mars will expose crews to a persistent, fine particulate environment whose physicochemical properties and health implications remain only partly understood.
