NASA Advances Pressure Sensitive Paint Research Capabilityhttps://www.nasa.gov/aeronautics/pressure-sensitive-paint-2025/Many of us grew up using paint-by-number sets to create beautiful color pictures. For years now, NASA engineers studying aircraft and rocket designs in wind tunnels have flipped that childhood pastime, using computers to generate images from “numbers-by-paint” – pressure sensitive paint (PSP), that is. Now, advances in the use of high-speed cameras, supercomputers, and […]Jul 3, 2025 6:59 PM

Show HN: Mochia, a virtual pet browser game, built with Rust, SolidJS, Postgreshttps://mochia.net/Around three years ago, I was reminiscing about how much I loved playing Neopets as a kid. Meanwhile, I was also looking for a project to better learn Rust and SolidJS. So.. I figured making my own virtual pet browser game would be a fun way to practice! Since then, I’ve been working on it nearly every day, and.. it’s grown quite a bit! Here are some bulleted lists for your convenience:Technical Details: * Backend monolithic Rust server runs on a single $5/month VPS * Lean frontend with just 3 dependencies (SolidJS, Solid Router, and Mutative) * Around 130,000 combined lines of code (frontend + backend) * Rust server uses axum, sqlx, tokio, rand, strum, tungstenite (websockets) * No server crashes or data loss in 3 years (thank you Rust + Postgres!) * Almost all graphics (500+ assets) are SVGs for perfect detail at every zoom level * Fully mobile responsive and playable on all modern browsers and devices * Actor model for player actions enables trivial parallel, multi-core scaling * SiJul 3, 2025 5:00 PM

One line email taught me more about communication than months of buildinghttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44453367I'm Francesco, as you might have read here I'm building a job application tool called interviuu, and this morning, like every morning, I was checking emails. After recent launch day my inbox looks like a mix of user feedback and people offering their services, but there was also this one message that really hit me."Interesting approach no free time don’t know what’s behind the curtain just pay the money good luck"Super simple email, just a few lines, but the value was huge. Made me realize that if my startup doesn't have a free trial (or freemium plan) I have to communicate the real value of the product way better on the landing page or in any educational content.I'm not saying this is some groundbreaking discovery or that it wasn't obvious, but there are certain interactions when you launch that make you pay attention to these obvious things a lot more. So, for me, a clear, realistic view of what your product actually does can solve three major issues: - Potential misunderstandings andJul 3, 2025 9:52 AM

Show HN: A tool for services businesses to improve their customer experiencehttps://sashy.ai/demoI took a 9-week Data Science bootcamp last year, having previously had no formal software development education. My previous jobs had been mechanical product development and business development.During the course, I came up with the idea to extract valuable information from natural language. Online reviews seemed like a good place to start.Unlike other platforms that pass reviews to an LLM and get it to output the sentiment, I came up with a formula for calculating how much each individual review comment affects the business's overall Google rating (see Reviews page of the demo). The 'impact' values are then added up to tell business owners where they are doing well/poorly in terms of customer experience and suggests prioritised improvement actions (see Actions on Dashboard page) so that they know where to focus their attention. So far, 25+ businesses are using the platform, mainly restaurants and food & beverage consultancies, but also cleaning services, bakeries.I built the product mysJul 1, 2025 4:41 PM

Show HN: Semcheck – AI Tool for checking implementation follows spechttps://github.com/rejot-dev/semcheckHi HN, like many I've been interested in the direction software engineering is taking now that coding LLMs are becoming prevalent. It seems that we're not quite there for "natural language programming", but it seems new abstractions are already starting to form. In order to explore this further I've built semcheck (semantic checker). It's a simple cli tool that can be used in CI or pre-commit to check that your implementation matches your specification using LLMs.The inspiration came while I was working on another project where I needed a data structure for a GeoJSON object, I passed Claude the text of RFC-7946 and it gave me an implementation. It took some back and forth after that before I was happy with it, but this also meant the RFC went out of context for the LLM. That's why I asked Claude again to check the RFC to make sure we haven't strayed too far from the spec. It occurred to me that it would be good to have a formal way of defining these kinds of checks that can be run in aJul 1, 2025 9:49 AM

Show HN: Checkpoint K8s pods transparently (plain CPU or GPU accelerated) [video]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9yY6_2255YHi HN,I am an early adopter of containers with a background in HPC. From the early days, I’ve tried to merge container tech into the HPC (and HTC) stack. Containers already make packing and deployment easier - especially in AI/ML and data science. How about checkpoint/restore?Over the last couple of months, we at MemVerge have developed a Kubernetes Operator for transparent checkpointing and restoring, allowing you to use discounted Spot instances for long-running workloads, like bioinformatics workflows or ML training. Here’s how it works: - the operator attaches a PVC to your pod - intercepts the STOP signal to checkpoint the pod - if the attached PVC contains a checkpoint when the pod is starting over, it will be restored instead of starting from scratch. Here’s a 2m30s video that demonstrates interrupting a small training workload: https://youtu.be/K9yY6_2255YThis can be triggered by someone draining the node (e.g., due to an EC2 Spot reclaim), deleting a pod, or another operator actJun 27, 2025 5:33 AM
