Show HN: Sufleur - npm-style prompt registry with typed code-generationhttps://github.com/sufleur/cliHi HN, I've built Sufleur, a prompt registry and companion CLI tool. The motivation was essentially the frustration that prompts are becoming more and more crucial parts of applications, but in the codebases I've seen, they just sit around as random strings, in-house templates with odd rules, and essentially no version control beyond git. I've felt pain in the past when prompts suddenly changed their schemas (either input for rendering or output expected by the LLM), having to read through the whole thing to figure out what I need to supply for the rendering to work, and spent hours trying to debug why the carefully written and evaluated prompt which worked wonders in a python notebook suddenly stopped working in a typescript codebase in prod...These are the main ideas:- Mustache templates for the prompts, since Mustache is a mature, logic-less templating language which already has packages in a lot of languages I would ever want to target.- Input schemas to render a prompt properly ar

Ask HN: My dev blog has 11k followers. I stopped writing it. What would you do?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49231291In 2017, I started a series on Medium called "How JavaScript works". The idea was to explain to web devs what actually happens under the hood in the browser. Some stats from the most popular articles (purely organic):* Inside the V8 engine + 5 tips on how to write optimized code: 488K views / 128K reads* An overview of the engine, the runtime and the call stack: 423K / 166K* Memory management + how to handle 4 common memory leaks: 421K / 77KThe blog is at ~11K followers now, almost all developers.Back then every article ended with a plug for my startup, which was the actual reason I was writing them. My company got acquired, I kept the blog, and I took the plugs out. When the blog was active, I had a couple of people/companies ask to buy it and a few more wanting to advertise in it. None of it made sense at the time, so I passed on all of it.These days I don't have the time, or honestly the inspiration, for long-form technical writing like that. But it feels like a waste to just let it

Show HN: Argonix – One AI-powered platform for SRE and cloud operationshttps://argonix.io/Hi everybody,I built https://argonix.io.Argonix is an AI-powered platform for SRE, security and cloud operations. The idea is to bring and connect together things that are usually spread across many different tools: monitoring, security, Finops, health checks, workflows and incident investigation.A few things you can do with it:Connectors: Connect Argonix to your existing stack: Kubernetes, AWS, GCP, Azure, your own MCP servers, etc.Workflows: Build automation flows using the connectors.Health notebooks: Get a daily overview of the health of your platforms. Argonix can publish the report to Slack, Confluence, etc., and create tickets when something needs attention.Periodic jobs: Schedule recurring checks, analysis and automation.Security: Scan of your connectors infras, your code also (new feature), analyse network logs, and look for vulnerabilities and threats. It can also consume data from tools such as Falco, Wazuh, Wiz, SonarQube, etc. FinOps – Analyse cloud costs across AWS, GCP an

Ask HN: How can I find trackers I did not place in my stuff?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49226365By sheer luck I found a Tile BLE tracker in a car I purchased recently. I assume it was put there by the previous owner in case of theft and forgotten. It nonetheless has been destroyed. Now I'd really like to know how you defend yourself against this sort of attack?I'm not looking to defend against a 3 letter agency or nation-state, but against any low tech stalker, ex, would be thief, or cop without access to Flock cameras type of adversary. Looking for something that would be able to find BLE trackers regardless of platform/company.I ran a scan using nRF but there is a lot of noise out there and isn't sustainable. Have you found trackers in your stuff? How do you defend against trackers? There are apps out there but it's hard to trust them with the required permissions. Open source would be great. I'm on Android and have "tracker protection" or whatever enabled.

Show HN: Dirblock+envblock – tiny whitelist guards for dirs and env secretshttps://github.com/roku-oss/dirblockAfter I missed getting hit by the LiteLLM attack by 30 minutes, I decided to see what I could do about it and wrote dirblock. It uses fanotify to block access to ~/.ssh, ~/.gpg, etc. with whitelists of trusted programs — everything else is denied.Shortly after, I wrote its spiritual cousin, envblock, which uses eBPF to stop untrusted programs from receiving real values of GH_TOKEN, AWS keys, and similar environment variables (it poisons them instead).I’ve been running both on my own machines for months. They are intentionally small and narrow (67 KB and 119 KB). Setup is usually under an hour once you know which directories and variables matter. Config is TOML, dry-run modes exist, and they fail open / poison rather than try to be a full MAC system.I’ve just been allowed to open source them.https://github.com/roku-oss/dirblockhttps://github.com/roku-oss/envblockHappy to answer questions.

Tell HN: Tally Data Breachhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49213500Received a notice from tally.so notifying that someone accessed their user database.I asked which “hash” they used and whether passwords were salted. I have not heard back yet.—On August 3, an attacker gained unauthorized access to Metabase, the analytics service we use to see how Tally is used. Through that they reached your email address, and your password as a cryptographic hash. A hash is one-way, so it can't be turned back into your password. They didn't reach your forms, or the answers people submitted to them. Those are stored separately.

Ask HN: Are You Preparing for the Singularityhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49212687At this point it seems pretty clear that we are in the midst of the Singularity right now. Noteworthy unsolved math problems are being solved at an alarming rate. Agent swarms have executed hacks at the level of nation state actors. Depending on the domain, frontier AI models demonstrate intelligence at human levels or above. And capabilities are improving at a rapid rate at every level of the stack with no signs of slowing down. At this point it feels like we are witnessing one of the most significant events in world history. The risks and downsides are obviously catastrophic in nature. Job losses being among the potentially milder issues coming up. What are people doing to prepare for the transformations that are coming?

Show HN: Changed how I use agent harnesseshttps://github.com/maximhq/bifrost/I’ve been using OpenCode for quite a while now, and I’m in love with it. The subscription cost of Claude Code or Codex doesn’t make much sense to me, so I prefer the free tier of OpenCode Zen!But for planning and drafting I do need capable models, which I grab from Zenmux or similar providers, and those are heavily rate-limited. I’d get most of the way through a task and hit a limit, which meant stopping, opening the config, swapping the provider, restarting, and picking the task back up from wherever it died. Three or four times per complex task. Losing the quota was annoying. Losing my place in the task was worse. What I settled on was putting a gateway in front of everything and pointing OpenCode at that instead of at any single provider. One base URL in the OpenCode config, and the routing happens behind it. When one provider 429s, the request goes to the next one with headroom.I tried LiteLLM first. It works, and if your stack is already Python it’s probably the more obvious pick.B

Show HN: Sidebar – a private ESP32 intercom for five kids, no accountshttps://www.sundaradnus.ca/writing/sidebar-building-a-ham-radio-for-my-sonHello all - Inspired by many who build/assemble for their daughters/sons, I took cue and assembled a two-way communication between my son and his friends. Nothing spectacular. Just basic stuff to talk.He is eleven and doesn't have a phone. I wanted him to talk to his friends without an account, a feed, or an algorithm in between, so I built five ESP32-S3 touchscreen units, one per kid. Tap a friend's name, their unit rings. Tap Everyone, they all ring. Each unit dials outbound to a relay I run, so no house opens a port. Audio is uncompressed 16 kHz PCM in 20 ms frames, AES-256-GCM with a fresh key per call, over UDP with an encrypted-WebSocket fallback. To be precise: encrypted to my relay, not end-to-end. No rooms, no recordings, no free-text contacts; the roster lives in a server-side allow-list.I'm a PM, engineer by degree but not by profession - let alone a firmware engineer. I assembled this with Claude as the engineering partner, which is why the write-up includes what went wrong:

Show HN: I spent 2 years designing a mechanical Magic Keyboardhttps://electronicmaterialsoffice.com/Hi HN, today I’m revealing Altar II, an ultra-low profile (4.75mm) mechanical keyboard designed to replace your Magic Keyboard. It’s the keyboard I wish Apple made.Altar II has fully mechanical switches, plus a magnetically detachable dial, haptic feedback, a red backlight, and a native macOS companion app.I’m a heavy Mac user and I feel that Apple hasn’t given its keyboards the attention they deserve, in terms of hardware, software, and features, so I set out to try and change that.It was a massive undertaking and it has taken almost 2 years to get to this stage. One of the main obstacles was fitting a reasonably sized battery into the chassis, and aggressive power profiling without messing with the user experience. Another issue was we couldn’t fit any components on the underside of the PCB because there was literally no space to do so (and there are a lot of components).Around 4 years ago I posted my first keyboard to HN (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32507172).
