Ask HN: A better way to fund content creatorsI've been thinking about how content creators get funding. There's various things like Patreon, YouTube memberships etc... and lots of one off donation type things such as Ko-fi or directly using Paypal. The problem is, this all quickly adds up to a lot of money and most people will just end up in the situation of thinking - there's no way I can support everyone I should, so I won't support anyone.I wonder if there's room for a better way of doing things. Maybe a way to make micropayments actually work? What if you could pay whatever your budget is each year (maybe even a couple of dollars) and then allocate proportions of that to the people you want to support?Maybe this could be adjusted over the year and topped up - not sure how all the maths would work. But it would let you just say - I've got $10 for the year to spend - as I find people I want to support I'll add them to my list.

Show HN: Public transportation signage based on bloom filters (rough mockup)Hello, I was running around Germany, hectically navigating public transportation, and getting lost all the time. I noticed that every station had i platforms, each used lists of n buses (trains, whatever) arriving, each has their list of m destinations. That means I would be scanning i x n x m items just to see if I was at the correct stop. As I was nervous, for every bus that arrived, I would rescan the list of stops to double check. I began thinking how I could make a better system.Linked is a very shoddy mockup of how bloom filters could be used to allow passengers O(1) lookup time for which platform+bus is the correct one. I believe it's likely for public transportation to grow increasingly more complex in the future, as population grows, and under the current list-based system, this will make the signage ever more complex. I think some bloom filter mechanism could reduce that complexity. So, here is my fantasy, my day dream. What do you think?

Ask HN: All wireless headphones / earbuds have problems picking up my voiceHi there, this has been an ongoing problem for me since I started wearing wireless headphones / earbuds. So far, I've owned- Bose Quiet Comfort- Apple AirPods Pro- Apple Airpods Pro Max (Current)And for some reason, it seems other people with the same products come through in noisy environments, but I don't.I'm at the point where I cannot answer calls using these devices. Working remotely, this has a huge impact on me. I can only take meetings in complete silence with my headphones. If I am on the go and someone calls me, I have to use the Phone. It is so extremely frustrating because I bought the AirPods Pro Max to get rid of this problem, assuming Apple would have created the best of the best but at this point, I am starting to think that my voice is incompatible with whatever noice-cancelling/isolating algorithm that is built into these devices.

Ask HN: How to work with people who push back forcefully?I've worked at a large, famous software company with an academic-inspired workplace and culture for almost 8 years and been fairly successful.Several times in that span, I've worked with people who push back quite forcefully on comments or feedback on topics or practices that have either explicit company standards or at least generally accepted best practices. It seems to me that most people at the company are conflict-avoidant so that when these people push back aggressively, it's often a successful strategy. Ten minutes of arguing and wearing the other person down saves them 20 minutes of writing unit tests or fixing their code or whatever. I've seen in the past that these people effectively carve out an unspoken exemption for themselves because everyone is sick of having the same conversation.I'm the tech lead but not manager of my current team and I'm responsible for the technical execution of the team and the success or failure on that level. There are a bunch of great people who d

Ask HN: Have you ever experienced eBay refusing to pay youI recently sold about $2500 worth of total sales on ebay. After they took their ~$500 fee they have now restricted my account and requested information to confirm my identity, address, and proof of owning the product. Fine, whatever, I send the the requested info (scanned my Drivers License, provided a bill with my name and address on it, and provided all receipts of the products). The items I was selling were the codes for in game items for Call of Duty Modern Warfare II. They have a promotion running where if you buy a meal they give a code for in game items. Since they are not available everywhere in the world I figured I would attempt to sell some and eBay was explicitly told what I was selling with them never saying that was any kind of issue. They are now telling me that unless I can provide an invoice they will not be unlocking my account and will be holding the $2000 that was supposed to be paid out and I will be out approximately $900 that I spent obtaining the codes. It's als

Ask HN: How to get un-shadow banned on Twitter?Has anyone else here experienced this? (I know many people did!)So I suspected this for a while but I finally confirmed it - I was shadow banned; to my understanding this is likely because I opened a bot (commands on @mention) account with same mail/phone or whatever. This is worst than actual banning. I've been living in the shadows for who knows how long.Recently I gained some momentum - one of my threads (same handle, @high_byte) got relatively viral and I doubled my followers overnight. (from 300 to almost 600 lol)But still I am invisible to the world. support@twitter.com auto-replies with basically "we don't answer via email". Their support page has only Q&A and no contact information. This should be illegal! What can I do?

Ask HN: Will banks inflate Bitcoin just like they inflate fiat money? One main strength of Bitcoin is that it is supposed to be limited to 21 million. Which would make it a good store of value and an inflation hedge. But what will prevent banks from creating it out of thin air, just like they create Dollars and Euros?Let's take a look at it in terms of dollars:Entrepreneur Joe wants to build a business. He goes to a bank and "takes a loan". Which means the bank writes down in their computer "Joe's balance is 100,000 dollar". Then Joe hires Sue. Sue works her ass off for one month and gets "paid" 5000 dollar. Joe tells his bank to "pay" Sue 5000 Dollar. So, the bank writes down in their computer "Joe's balance is 95,000 Dollar. Sue's balance is 5000 Dollar".The story would work the same, no matter if you replace "Dollar" with "Bitcoin" or "Purple Diamonds" or whatever. The bank's computer does not care how many Bitcoins or Purple Diamonds are out there. It's just an SQL database. So if Bitcoin become the new currency, soon people would collectively "own" bi

How are these people in Reddit getting textbooks for free?So I did a sting operation in reddit. Just google "textbook piracy reddit" and see all the subreddits where people are requesting ebooks.I used to think they download from libgen and sell here for cheap. So I created a fake request and tried to trap some. Turns out THEY HAD THE BOOK THAT I ASKED FOR.Even more surprising thing was the book I was asking them was indian books.1) Even if their university had access to ebooks, having indian ebooks is the least likely thing. (Indian I mean written by Indians not in hindi, related to engineering and cs).2) I then tried IRC chats, to check if the book they got was from there. NOPE.3) It wasn't ofc from libgen/b-ookzz or whatever it is.4) Not from google search obviously.https://www.amazon.com/System-Simulation-D-S-Hira-ebook/dp/B00QUYL022https://www.kopykitab.com/System-Simulation-Modelling-And-Languages-by-R-Panneerselvam-P-Senthilkumarthey had these 2 ebooks but not this onehttps://www.amazon.in/Modeling-Simulation-Electrical-Engineering-Ele

Ask HN: From a business perspective, how does an “arms deal” play out?Imagine congress approves the “$40 billion arms deal to Ukraine.” Logistically, what does this mean? How do the weapons and money change hands?Presumably the US treasury doesn’t send palettes of cash and a letter of reference for the Ukrainian military to give to Raytheon and Lockheed Martin in exchange for as many million-dollar missiles as they can fit in their C-130 shopping cart.So how does it work? Who picks which vendors provide the weapons? Who transfers the money to the vendors? Is the Ukrainian military even involved in the transaction, or do they take whatever the US buys for them?It seems to me that this must be rife with moral hazards. How convenient that right as the war in Afghanistan winds down (leaving all the equipment unrecoverable), a new war starts up and suddenly Uncle Sam is paying $40 billion to unload your excess stock and get you started on the next generation of weaponry.I’m all for helping the people of Ukraine, but I also believe firmly that war is unequivoc

Makers Tools vs. Managers Tools: Who's Winning?Multiplayer, hyper-collaborative tools like Figma, Google Sheets, Replit… are built with the Maker in mind. They create rich, vertical contexts for designers, developers, analysts to bloom & build. When both specialized work and collab happen speedily and losslessly within these apps, for a Maker to go to Slack, email and/or Jira becomes a channel of last resort. But Managers live on these tools! And management means setting deadlines, switching "gears", unblocking others, shifting priorities... things you can't do on the Makers' tools. My thesis is that on this massive, abrupt shift to working remotely, management tools not only haven't been able to keep up with a Manager's needs, but they have created new jobs-to-be-done. Whatever JTBD you may think of, it all comes down to one key constraint: finite time.Prior to the covid-19 crisis, time was dealt with 20th-century, office-first, protocols. Hierarchical, cultural and physical protocols that double down as constraints: seniority, offic

Ask HN: Should we survey all the oceans? Our future on Earth is rather gloomy. We are causing a massive climate dereliction and an even larger loss of biodiversity - and we do very little about it.The space programs to send humans in space are at the same time granted hundreds of billions. Many point that maybe this money should be invested in ... discovering our oceans rather than setting up a base on the Moon.I was until recently convinced that it would be much more relevant. Now I wonder: Could it be better to keep the oceans away from our knowledge?I know how absurd it sounds. My opinion varies accordingly to my mood, I reckon. One day, I have faith that knowledge and Science is The Way. The other day, I can't help thinking that the current unchecked capitalism will ruthlessly exploit whatever Science discovers at whatever cost for the climate and biodiversity.Could it be more ethical to keep our oceans and seas out of reach of capitalism?Of course, it's easy to argue that a better knowledge will empower the protectors of

Ask HN: Could Ukrainian embassies facilitate US hackers to join the cyber front?(Embassies as well as consulates.)Whatever happens inside these locations "never happened" so to speak. Ironclad plausible deniability.I've seen several comments from software engineers saying that they'd love to join the cyber fight but won't because doing so is, of course, illegal. But San Francisco has a consulate, and so it got me thinking about this option.Ukraine is now openly calling for international volunteers to support both combat and cyberwarfare operations. Perhaps they'd be amenable to allowing some of the best hackers on the planet through their doors to fight with impunity.I'm not encouraging people to do this, more just a morbid curiosity about the mechanics and plausibility of it as a strategy. We're seeing a whole lot of technological elements we (or at least most people) have never seen in war over the past few days.
