Anti-Corporate-Speak Public Announcement: We Messed Up (Chrome Crash Edition)https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44957617HN always criticizes corporate mea culpas, the “mistakes were made” passive voice, and all the gaslighting. Well, here’s what Google actually published in 2027 when Chrome (which they didn’t lose to antitrust) started crashing sometimes:We’re not going to bury this in marketing fluff or “continuous improvement” nonsense. Chrome crashed. It’s our fault. Here’s the ugly version: our speculative renderer processes started leaking handles into the compositor thread, which in turn forced GPU raster threads to lock a resource already orphaned by a zombie frame. The garbage collector couldn’t reclaim it because of a dangling reference in the shared worker pool, so the watchdog nuked the tab. If you had more than one extension juggling DOM mutation observers at the time, congratulations: you found one of the thousand sharp edges we left in the codebase. And yes, part of this happened because a programmer came in a little inebriated after an offsite party and checked in a “minor” fix without real

Show HN: I just built a tool to turn any photo into pixel arthttps://www.phototopixel.art/Hey everyone,I'm excited to share a brand new side project I just finished building: phototopixel.art. It's a simple web tool that automatically converts any photo you upload into pixel art.I've always been a fan of the aesthetic of pixel art, but manually creating it is a tedious process. After trying out some existing tools and not being fully satisfied with the results, I decided to build my own. My goal was to create a fast and easy-to-use solution that consistently produces great-looking pixel art.Behind the Scenes The core of the tool uses a combination of color quantization and pixelation algorithms. When you upload a photo, the system analyzes its color data and reduces it to a limited palette, while simultaneously creating the iconic blocky look. One of the biggest challenges was fine-tuning the balance between preserving key details and achieving a genuine pixel art feel. I experimented a lot with the algorithm to find the sweet spot, allowing users to choose different setting

Ask HN: How do you manage downtime as a developer?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44796789i've been working in software for almost 10 years with a stable, decent job. the work is interesting at times, the team is fine, and the company isn’t doing anything insane.however i’m finding myself in a pattern that’s mentally exhausting: some weeks (or months), there’s no urgent focus, no clear priority, and no pressure. there’s work i could do — bugs, refactoring, docs—but nobody will notice if i do it or don’t. these aren’t vacation days, but they feel like slow-drain burnout zones.weirdly,i’m not like this elsewhere. i have a side project where i can easily focus 8+ hours without much friction. but at my main job, staying focused feels like a mental grind. i’ve tried time-blocking, daily planning etc. - but i don’t stick with them in this foggy state. i tried working on expanding my knowledge, read a book on tcp/ip, build a webserver in a new language, but i cant seem to stick with it.my current workaround: i commit to either doing work or literally doing nothing (staring at a wa

Show HN: Fast Elevation API with memory mapped tileshttps://www.terraintap.comI recently wrote and launched a high-performance Elevation API, built from the ground up, in C. I was highly inspired by the handmade community and I was intrigued by the idea of handling fairly large datasets and optimizing caching and smart prefetching, and to cream out maximum performance in terms of latency and handling large loads. The whole thing is built from scratch. I wanted to roll my own high performance server that could handle a lot, mostly for the technical challenge but also because it brings down hosting costs. At the core is a hand made TCP server where a single thread handles all I/O via epoll, distributing the events to a pool of worker threads. The server is fully non-blocking and edge-triggered, with a minimal syscall footprint during steady-state operation.Worker threads handle request parsing and perform either direct elevation lookups for single- or multi-points, or compute sample points along polyline paths. The elevation data is stored as memory mapped geotiff ra

Show HN: Flowcus – Kanban Board for OmniFocus and Apple Remindershttps://getflowcus.app/I've been an OmniFocus user for years but always felt something was missing – I could capture everything but couldn't see the bigger picture of my work. Traditional task managers are great at collection and to do lists but I think they don't solve the problem of visualising and managing work.*What It Does*Flowcus is a macOS app that visualises your OmniFocus, Apple Reminders & plain text tasks as a customisable Kanban board. It's not intended to replace your task managers, rather it enhances them by providing:- Visual workflow with customisable columns and swimlanes - Drag-and-drop task management that syncs back to your original task managers - Work-in-progress limits to prevent overcommitment - Eisenhower matrix view for prioritising important vs. urgent work - Ability to mark tasks as blocked and visualise dependencies - A unified view of tasks from multiple platforms - Throughput & ageing work metricsFor example, you might have research tasks in OmniFocus, meeting reminders in Appl

Show HN: RKIK v0.6.0 – A stateless NTP inspection CLI (Rust, async, no root)https://github.com/aguacero7/rkikHi HN,I've just released version 0.6.0 of RKIK (Rusty Klock Inspection Kit), a command-line tool for inspecting NTP servers. It's designed for passive, read-only analysis of NTP offset and delay — much like `dig` is to DNS or `ping` is to ICMP.Why?In environments where you can't or don't want to run `chronyd`, `ntpd`, or `ntpdate` (e.g. containers, sandboxes, CI), there's no lightweight way to check if your system is drifting from trusted NTP servers.RKIK fills that gap: - Query one or more NTP servers - Compare offsets between multiple servers asynchronously (thanks to Tokio) - Output in JSON or readable text - Works with both IPv4 and IPv6 - No root, no sync, no config, no daemon - Written in Rust, single binary (~2MB)Example usage: rkik pool.ntp.org rkik --compare time.google.com time.cloudflare.com rkik -C ntp1 ntp2 ntp3 --format json Example output: Server: time.google.com Offset: -1.203 ms RTT: 2.320 ms RefID: GOOG Stratum: 1 Why Rust?It compiles to a small static binary, has gre

Show HN: Blank White Cards – Global Drawing Party Gamehttps://blankwhite.cardsG’day HN, this year I've been remaking my online adaption of the classic party game 1000 Blank White Cards (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1000_Blank_White_Cards)I started this project in 2019/2020, originally as a drinking game for house parties, but it transformed into a way for my friends to keep in touch during the long Melbourne COVID lockdowns.Essentially anyone can draw and submit cards to a common ‘Global Deck’. You then pick them up and do what they say (or not). The whole premise of this game is that there are no concrete rules - they’re forever evolving.Over the years people from around the world have contributed nearly 500 cards. I have to say I’m impressed that it’s probably 80% high vs 20% low quality content. The art ranges from awesome to hilariously crude and the gameplay is somewhat coherent - but always hilarious. There are global servers for multiplayer custom games where people can jump into the same session and move cards around a bit more like a real tabletop game.

Show HN: An API for human-powered browser taskshttps://browser-work.com/At APM Help, we have a large team that performs repetitive, browser-based tasks. Years ago, to manage this work securely and get a clear audit trail, we built an internal platform we call "Hub." It's essentially a locked-down environment where our team works that records their sessions, tracks every interaction, and prevents data from being copied or shared. It's been our internal source of truth for years.More recently, like many companies, we've been building more automation. And like everyone else, we've seen our automations fail on edge cases—a weirdly formatted invoice our parser can't read, a website layout change that breaks a scraper, etc. Our team would have to manually step in to fix these. We realized other developers must have this exact same problem, but without a 250-person team on standby. So we connected our old, battle-tested Hub to a new, modern front door: a Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) API. We're calling it browser-work.com.The idea is simple: when you hit a task that ne
