Ask HN: As non-nuke power, why fight a nuke power, esp if you have an easy out?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30637859The easy out for Ukraine was to just go neutral, like Austria. Then live happily ever after. And, ps, your enemy has a trump card in the form of a massive nuclear weapon stash -- maybe the largest in the world -- you want to force him to play his trump card? The US is the only country to have detonated nukes in a war situation -- there is already precedent -- the world did not end -- it might not end this time, too. Maybe. Nuclear weapon use is definitely on the table. You, as Ukraine, do not have nukes -- but you fight a nuclear power anyways? Whut?Instead, if you went neutral, you could lead the vanguard in establishing nuclear-free zones in Europe. You could still buy lots of guns and big trucks, like many of your American friends, in case you need your toxic masculinity to run a bit wild -- just no nukes or other big missile systems and such that could really damage Russia too quickly.Nobody could blame you for acceding to 'the madman, Putin' -- Putin could have easily wiped Ukraine of

Launch HN: Optery (YC W22) – Remove your personal info from the internethttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30605010Hi HN, we’re Lawrence, Chen and Dekel from Optery (https://www.optery.com/). Optery is opt out software that removes your home address, phone number, email, age, and other private info from the internet. Specifically, we find and delete your profiles on hundreds of data broker and people-search web sites.Sites like Radaris, SocialCatfish, VoterRecords.com, Persopo, PeekYou, and WhitePages.com scrape the internet for the personal information of as many people as they can find, plus buy it in bulk from other sources. Then they post it online and sell it to anyone who wants to know about you. This is legal (though there are a lot of gray areas), but the net result is that a shocking amount of personal data is available about us online. Most of these sites will remove your data if you ask—but they don’t make it easy. Plus you have to ask each of them individually, and to do that, you have to know who they are in the first place. We automate the opt-out process on these sites, first finding

Show HN: CL and FB reselling app with auto renew and auto price reductionhttps://shto.gumroad.com/l/autoposter/ap1dollarhn?_gl=1%2Avpor02%2A_ga%2AMTg5ODI1NDE1OS4xNjQxOTYwNDU0%2A_ga_6LJN6D94N6%2AMTY0NjUwMjc1NC4yMC4xLjE2NDY1MDUzMTkuMA..I recently moved apartments and had a lot of stuff I wanted to get rid of.I found the reselling process to be cumbersome – I needed to post the same info twice, to both Facebook and Craigslist. I had to renew the items so they don't expire. I also had to reduce the item prices if they didn't sell.So I decided to do what any right minded overzealous, "pragmatic" software engineer does – instead of spending 10 minutes every few days reducing the prices and renewing the items, why not spend 3 weeks to build out a fully decked out Electron app that does all of the above automatically for you? Why not indeed...In the end, it's been a fun ride and I learned a lot. And actually! now it's coming in handy as I'm finally starting to sell the backlog of items that I've accumulated.Once I built it, I figured I'd offer it on gumroad, make a buck, why not... btw, the link is for a discounted version ($1 instead of $10) so that you lovely HN lot can try it out.Curious if you all have thoughts / feedb

Launch HN: Slai (YC W22) – Build ML models quickly and deploy them as appshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30543228Hi HN, we’re Eli and Luke from Slai (https://www.slai.io/hn/62203ae9ee716300083c879b). Slai is a fast ML prototyping platform designed for software engineers. We make it easy to develop and train ML models, then deploy them as production-ready applications with a single link.ML applications are increasingly built by software engineers rather than data scientists, but getting ML into a product is still a pain. You have to set up local environments, manage servers, build CI/CD pipelines, self-host open-source tools. Many engineers just want to leverage ML for their products without doing any of that. Slai takes care of all of it, so you can focus on your own work.Slai is opinionated: we are specifically for software developers who want to build models into products. We cover the entire ML lifecycle, all the way from initial exploration and prototyping to deploying your model as a REST API. Our sandboxes contain all the code, dataset, dependencies, and application logic needed for your mo

Launch HN: 1Flow (YC W22) – In-product user feedback for web/mobile appshttps://1flow.appHi HN, I’m Kai from 1Flow (https://1flow.app). 1Flow is an easy way to create in-app surveys for web / mobile apps. It’s really hard to get reliable feedback from users. We solve that problem. Our surveys have a 50-70% response rate on average, compared to 5-10% for traditional surveys.I studied product design at college and then joined a mobile gaming company. It was painful to see how far removed product teams are from their users in the real world. We didn’t talk to users directly, as my design program had taught me. Instead, we relied on monthly reports from customer support and made top down decisions on what to build. Then I started a mobile app company of my own and also experienced this problem—it is actually very hard to reach users and hear their thoughts. We didn’t have a good way of contacting them, or often even know who was downloading our app. And when we did manage to contact them, they wouldn’t respond. I tried showing a pop-up in my app that led users to a Google form.

Ask HN: Stuck as a CS Major. Is there a way out?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30359627Long story short, I'm a junior taking CS, I hate it (sorry to everyone who loves it. Also, to clarify, my university isn't very theoretical in its approach), and because of my circumstances it's too late for me to switch majors.I originally wanted to be a physicist, but I switched midway into my first year because CS has got more financial security, physics isn't as glamorous as pop science would have you believe, academia might be a bad fit, etc etc, and I thought I'd like it. Hell, everyone thought I was in love with CS until I started complaining their ears off, because I SEEM like I'd like it. It's to the point that it affects my work. I do submit my work on time unless life gets in the way, and I do pretty decently actually, but getting through the thick wall of "fuck fuck fuck i signed up for this" and boredom takes a lot of effort — more than I thought, and I don't have any side projects because I'm not interested in anything. My resume would probably look like a big wall of ent

Embrace, Extend, Extinguish and Free Softwarehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30269511This is my highly opinionated but closely observed view of the rise and fall of free software.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish)In 1997 I worked at Worldcom qualifying backbone and data center routers. I wrote a tool to report on and display the health of all of the thousands of computers they could reach. I released it as free software. Eventually it was hosted on Sourceforge. My next big project in 2001 was Axiom, an IBM Research computer algebra product that I rebuilt and released as free software on Savannah, a GNU site. Later versions were released on Sourceforge, Litsoft, and eventually Github. All public work I've done is intended as "free software".The first real attack using "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" on free software was "open source", aimed at a more corporate-friendly version of free software. This is the beginning of the "Embrace" step. There have been many steps in between I'll skip. The Extend step is now in motion. Extend takes an idea and "

Launch HN: OneChronos (YC S16) – Combinatorial auctions market for US equitieshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30247159Hi HN—we're Kelly and Steve, co-founders of OneChronos (https://www.onechronos.com). OneChronos is a "Smart Market" for US equities—meaning we match counterparties using mathematical optimization instead of classical human auctioneer mechanics [1]. Our flavor of Smart Market—combinatorial auctions—lets users enter orders spanning multiple securities and specify matching preferences way beyond just price and quantity. We didn't invent Smart Markets or combinatorial auctions. Roughly $1T/year flows through them in industries ranging from display advertising to telecommunications. The underlying theory was the subject of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences [2]. We're bringing them to capital markets, and we have both the customers and the regulatory clearance to do so. Our initial user base contains the household names cumulatively responsible for ≈70% of US equities trading volume.Today's market structure costs institutional investors at least a trillion dollars annually. We'll go i

What Happened to Translation in Android?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30117590When you select non-english text in Android, the first option in the context menu is Translate with the Google logo. You would assume this brings up Google translate. But pressing this option in fact just opens a Google search for "translate XXX" where XXX is whatever text you selected. No translation widget appears on the search result page and I don't actually get a translation unless I click one of the links (which look like spam in the language I'm translating).Has it always been like this? Why doesn't the translate button actually link to their translation service?

Tell HN: Trying to learn from SICP makes me cryhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30039211Hello HN,I felt like I needed to vent somewhere while breaking from my SICP self-study session.Just for some background, I do not have a college degree because I have always felt like the schooling system is not a place for me to thrive. I am 23 now and 3 years ago I have decided to learn programming on my own and I have been working as an iOS Developer for the past 2.5 years. Gradually I have come to realize that whenever I am getting stuck on something, it most likely stems from having no background in CS and having little to no information about how the computer, interpreters, compilers, programming languages etc. work. Neither I am able to solve algorithmic challenges - if I do try to solve them, it takes insane amount of time for me to get some understanding on how to approach the problem. Professionally speaking, while doing day-to-day iOS Dev agenda, no one even expects me to have some profound knowledge of CS concepts, as mostly iOS has been just a bunch of Apple Library calls,

Launch HN: Joon (YC W22) – A mobile game that teaches kids to build good habitshttps://www.joonapp.io/Hi HN, we’re Brad, Kevin, & Isaac, the co-creators of Joon (https://www.joonapp.io/). Joon is a mobile game that motivates kids to do tasks that they might not otherwise want to do—things like chores, homework, brushing their teeth, or making their bed—or things which they like, but not always in the moment—calling a grandparent, for example. The game does this by embedding these tasks into fun “Quests” that the kids do want to do. Along the way, they develop good habits—not because they’re supposed to, but as a side effect of playing the game. Here’s a short video to give you the idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkOwk_wOBBE.One of the hardest parts of parenting (and of growing up!) is getting kids to do things that they don’t enjoy. Parents usually see these as important activities that will help their kids become independent, responsible, and ultimately, happy. Kids, however, often don’t feel the same way! This is an incentive alignment problem: kids want to have fun, parents wa
