Ask HN: How to avoid losing a baby video that “violates YouTube's guidelines”?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23403759Years ago I uploaded to YouTube a 30 minute home video of my kids when they were babies. I wanted to avoid losing the video to a hard drive crash, and also wanted to be able to share it with family members. I never shared it publicly.Big mistake! Now years later, YouTube emailed me, and informed me that my home video "violates guidelines". My guess is that a short sequence showing a 6 month old baby naked in a bathtub triggered some kind of porn filter :(.Of course I appealed, YouTube's decision, but to no avail. The worst part is that the YouTube UI prevents downloading my video and storing it somewhere else! Four days from now YouTube will delete my home video, and it will be gone forever. What can I do to avoid losing my video?Jun 3, 2020 2:35 PM

Show HN: The 1.0 of my Slack app – Visual Officehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23272759Hi HN,I am happy to say the v1.0 of my Slack app, Visual Office, is ready today! https://www.visualoffice.app/My obsession with extending an office metaphor into Slack started last year, when I was managing a remote team of engineers at a company that is 75% remote. Despite loving my work from home days, I couldn't help but notice that I was closer to my co-workers I saw in person than the ones I interacted with remotely. For the most part this was minor, but important, interactions. The banter when we first came into the office, lunches taken together more often, and a general awareness of what they were focused on. On the other hand, it was harder to setup social time with my remote teammates (I didn't want to ping and interrupt them) and the context I had about what they were currently working on was often based on signals that got piped into slack in the form of jira, zendesk, or sales bot messages. Not an ideal way to build a relationship, especially outside my immediate team.VisuaMay 22, 2020 2:54 PM

Launch HN: Taiv (YC W20) – Replace TV commercials with content people care abouthttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22666658Hey HN!We’re Noah, Avi, and Jordan from Taiv (https://www.taiv.tv). We make a box that lets sports bars and other businesses replace live TV commercials with content their customers actually care about.A year and a half ago, I was sitting in a local bar and saw a commercial showing that the same beer I was drinking was cheaper across the street. The place I was in had other drinks on specials for way cheaper and great happy hour food, but they didn’t have an effective way to tell me about it. I ended up walking away feeling ripped off when I could have left a happy customer if they had been able to more effectively make me aware of their specials. It got me investigating how businesses communicate with their customers. I found out that half of all restaurants close within a year and that one of the most common reasons they fail is because they’re unable to educate their customers about everything they offer and what events they have coming up. We built Taiv to give business owners a wayMar 23, 2020 5:51 PM

Ask HN: Does it help moderators if we report kittens?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22443976Hi everyone,Ok, it's Friday and the question will sound very silly but I was wondering what the community would think about it.You might be aware that big social medias platforms (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter..) are getting their content moderated by farms of people, causing a lot of mental health issues. It's pretty sad to see people being payed with minimum wages with no decent working conditions and no health support, especially from companies promoting the fantastic working conditions. You can find a lot of content online about this topic.I assume the content reaching their screen is the one that is reported by the community. So, if we all report one or two content a day, something very cute to see, will we make moderator life better by dilluting the quantity of horror they are meant to see?I think about these 3 scenarios, I feel the number 2 is the most plausible.1. This will just push them to decrease the time allowed to moderate a content, so making their conditions worse. 2. PlatFeb 28, 2020 4:36 PM

Launch HN: Goodcover (YC S17) – Cooperative renters insurance for half the pricehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22368112Hi HN, we’re Chris and Dan, co-founders of Goodcover (https://www.goodcover.com). Goodcover provides renters insurance (only in California at the moment) and operates as a cooperative. We take a fixed fee on every policy, pool the premiums to pay claims, and then return what’s left over back to Members through an annual dividend. Thanks to this model and good technology we’re able to cut the price of renters insurance in half.I (Chris) worked in traditional insurance for 8 years. That time taught me to love insurance and how it picks people up after disasters, but it also gave me first hand exposure to the things people hate about it – the ever-increasing prices, the adversarial claims negotiations, the mountains of paperwork, and the byzantine decision making. All these inefficiencies kept us from really understanding and working for our policyholders – the people we were meant to serve. I became convinced technology was coming for this industry.I moved to SF in 2016, which is where IFeb 19, 2020 6:00 PM

Do Software Engineers inflate the reported hours they claim to work?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22317069Every now and then I hear a Software Engineer (often from the Bay Area) report how they work or are expected to work "60 to 90 hours a week", for example this guy: https://youtu.be/dvdL-21o3GM?t=22460h/w is 12 hours a day 5 days a week and 90h/w is almost 13h a day 7 days a week...I cannot imagine how you can stay productive during such extended period of time, not to mention any time to sleep, commute, self-care, basic house chores, family, games etc. Yet still, my impression is that plenty of Bay Area engineers are staying up-to-date with various Netflix shows, computer games and contribute to open source projects... this just doesn't compute.Probably one of the largest surveys of IT professionals on how long they work (still self reported) is the Stack Overflow survey, which shows that the average is actually more like 42h a week in the US: https://insights.stackoverflow.com/survey/2019#work-_-hours-worked-per-week0. Honestly, there's nothing different here then going to to google maps/yelp, searching for a cafe, then discovering it that way, I'm just lazy and I felt like there were too many choices. It's definitely in an early stage, but would love any feedback. High School Fizzle Syndrome – Predicting Future Successhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21910408Given the high number of accomplished people on HN, I'm curious about the phenomenon that some people call "High School Fizzle Syndrome" -- when former high school superstars fade into the background in their adult life. In this case I'm referring more specifically to the academic superstars rather than, say, athletic superstars. At my high school there were a large number of academic superstars. These were people who routinely placed first in national and international competitions, were class presidents, had perfect GPA's and standardized test scores, were Rhodes Scholars, and went on to gain admission to coveted colleges like Harvard/Yale/Stanford/MIT. The fierce competition was encouraged by teachers and parents alike. The superstar students complied with the demand -- these were highly motivated, extremely hardworking and talented individuals. The consensus was that, as a result of their early impressive achievements, they were destined for great things later in life.In hindsight, Dec 30, 2019 2:55 AM

Launch HN: Stir – Government Procurement as a Servicehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21381411Hey HN!I'm Jay Nath, founder of STIR (https://www.cityinnovate.com).STIR is a digital platform that connects the world’s most innovative tech companies with governments to solve challenges over 16 weeks. At the end of the 16 weeks governments can choose to go into contract with the startups (nearly 80% get a contract). Our key innovation is streamlining govt procurement by 10X: govts can issue an RFP in days vs months/yrs and startups can respond in hours vs days/weeks of effort.I created STIR when I worked for the Mayor of San Francisco to help close the innovation gap between cities and private-sector. It never ceased to amaze me how many of workflows and services were paper-based or put together using a MS Access database and yet we're surrounded by so much tech talent. My vision was to help catalyze the growth of the govtech ecosystem by creating startup-friendly contract opportunities. Something that was really important to me was ensuring that governments articulated their pain poOct 28, 2019 8:41 PM

Looking for the best way to compare the performance of different SVMs and CNNs?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21303240Hello, I'm a beginner in machine learning und I have a problem to find the best way to compare the performance (accuracy) of different SVMs and CNNs (Jupyter Notebook)? The CNNs I train in Google Colab with GPU. So far I've tried to make the models reproducible by setting seeds und train each model architecture several times. The reproducibility works with the SVMs, but not with the CNNs in Google Colab. But generally I'm not sure if reproducibility is really helpful in this case. Wouldn't it be better not to put any seeds and train each model several times and then compare the models by using the calculated mean and standard deviation?I hope and would be very grateful when you can explain me how to do it right. Many thanks in advanceOct 20, 2019 10:06 AM
