Ask HN: What makes a GREAT hackathon?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18239793I'm helping organize the next hackathon where I work. We have something like 30-50 people participating across technical frontend and backend teams, including UIUX folks, PMs and others.Typically our hackathons are 3 days long and are self-organized in to teams who go for various bounties. Anyone can suggest a bounty which might come with a trophy and maybe a gift card. Typically - but not exclusively - the hacks have been work related. We usually have a food challenge too during the event. Last time it was "who could eat the most pirogies" (the winner ate 100 over 3 days :-) ). We have a show & tell event at the end and open voting on the winners. We're open to changing things up!What have you seen (timing, tasks, organizationally or anything else) that works well or poorly in a hackathon? Thanks HN!Oct 17, 2018 3:09 PM

Ask HN: Why is hackernews so old-fashioned?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17412237As a web developer, it's always seemed strange to me that a tech incubator would have such an old-fashioned website. It's nice in some respects - pages load extremely quickly and the layout is compact and to-the-point. I was starting to think it was just minimalist by choice and not actually outdated, but then someone mentioned that async requests are done through an tag instead of ajax, so now I'm wondering what the story is there?Has it just been left alone because it's not broken? Or because they're worried people would get upset about changes? Or for maximum backward-compatibility? I'm not complaining; I'm just really curious.Jun 27, 2018 10:04 PM

Ask HN: Mentor/Advisor for post-revenue EdTech Company?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13793416Hello,EdTech is a wonky industry! Many downsides... but rewarding (social + profit) if you can carve out a foothold and grow your installed base. We're a small, bootstrapped, EdTech company in a niche space (think desktop application for a humanities field) that's looking for mentorship from an experienced EdTech veteran (either on the tech or business side). We've grown annual revenue to ~$600-700K (~$400K of that is ARR) across a variety of accounts: K-12, Universities, large publics, small privates, etc.Product engagement and customer satisfaction is great; we have low churn at an expensive price point + high conversion rates on pilot trials, but we're struggling to level up and grow to the next stage (which we define as $1MM+ ARR or an installed base across 500-1000 schools). There seems to be many older/experienced operators in the B2B and B2C spaces. Finding mentors in EdTech has been difficult for us.If you have a background in EdTech and are interested in mentoring a small, but hMar 4, 2017 11:10 PM
