Ask HN: Taking the First Job Offer?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24946252What are your thoughts on taking the first job offer you receive out of college?I'm in a weird situation. I have an offer to start as an SWE consultant at a small, but growing technical consulting company that has an office near my college (in NC), as well as offices in other states.Things I like about the company/offer: - Flat organizational structure - Supportive and collaborative culture (I've talked to 7 people at the company and had good impressions from all of them about this) - Better work-life balance compared to other consulting companies I know of - Opportunity for exposure to lots of technologies via different clients - Good starting pay ($72K) - Company pays for continuous learning opportunities (certifications + online courses) - Role is oriented around being a self-starter - Health insurance and 4 weeks PTOThings I don't like: - Perception (by others and myself) of settling, since this is my first offer - In an industry I don't think I'll stay in long-term. I'm interested

Ask HN: Can signal processing experts contribute to sustainable food production?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24386530From the outside I've always seen the field of sustainable food and artificial meat production as extremely important but am not aware of any ways someone with my skills can contribute to it. My training is as a communications engineer. I've thought about information theory, signal processing and statistics. Is there any demand for these skills in that sector? Thanks

What to Do with Spreadsheets in an Organizationhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24318471I work for a midsized public agency with some very smart but non-technical colleagues(housing, environmental health etc.) I was recently hired to improve our "data infrastructure".I am currently talking to departments to understand the landscape by asking them a few key questions: 1) What data sets have they used in the past year 2) Where and how do they source it (census website, internal databases etc) 3) How frequently do they refresh it and reuse it.I am starting to see a pattern where some datasets are sourced from internal systems with their own backing databases. It's a bit of a clutter but I can bring these different datasets to a centralized warehouse/datalake like environment that has discovery and querying capability. However, there is another consistent thread expressed by departmental analysts - "I get this other data from another agency via an excel spreadsheet as an email attachment" which I am struggling to understand what to do with. At this point I am not seeking a too

More Idleness would be betterhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24168732Idleness. A word that has fallen into disrepute. Idleness, as the proverb warns, is the root of all vice; and more than a few even see in it the worst of all vices: the refusal to perform in a performance-based society. The calls for deceleration, which are becoming louder and louder, have rehabilitated idleness to a certain extent in recent years. In the wellness sector at least it has found a firm place - and in countless magazine articles when it has to do finding oneself or burnout syndrome.Idleness requires free time. This is more than leisure time: it is a time free of constraints, empty time that can be filled with what the moment offers.Caught in the daily hustle and bustle, it is difficult to develop new perspectives. One is so busy mopping up the water that one does not even think of turning off the tap.In order to get a grip on things at any time, your hands should be free. Being idle means to have time to do the right thing at the right moment.(Source: Jupp Hartmann: Depart

Launch HN: QuestDB (YC S20) – Fast open source time series databasehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23975807Hey everyone, I’m Vlad and I co-founded QuestDB (https://questdb.io) with Nic and Tanc. QuestDB is an open source database for time series, events, and analytical workloads with a primary focus on performance (https://github.com/questdb/questdb).It started in 2012 when an energy trading company hired me to rebuild their real-time vessel tracking system. Management wanted me to use a well-known XML database that they had just bought a license for. This option would have required to take down production for about a week just to ingest the data. And a week downtime was not an option. With no more money to spend on software, I turned to alternatives such as OpenTSDB but they were not a fit for our data model. There was no solution in sight to deliver the project. Then, I stumbled upon Peter Lawrey’s Java Chronicle library [1]. It loaded the same data in 2 minutes instead of a week using memory-mapped files. Besides the performance aspect, I found it fascinating that such a simple method was

Ask HN: How can I gain more control over how much I work?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23773558I have 12 years experience writing software. The first half of that was at big data startup working with distributed systems using C++ and python. The second half has been more conventional full-stack development. That would be node / react / angular / backbone, etc. I was recently a part of a team upgrading a legacy system to a modern web application.I do enjoy my job and software in general, but there are a lot of other things I'd like to do in life and having a full-time job makes that difficult. Here are some options I've considered and my thoughts about them.1) Contract work: I live in NYC. From what I gather online, most contract opportunities are actually just a way for companies to put you on probation for a year before hiring you. I would happily work for 6 months to a year to then be able to take 1-3 months off. I can't help but wonder if there aren't speciality developers work shorter contracts that aren't just glorified probation. Am I missing something here?2) Part-time wo

Launch HN: PostEra (YC W20) Medicinal Chemistry-as-a-Service and Covid Moonshothttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23700275Hey everyone! We’re Alpha, Matt and Aaron, co-founders of PostEra (https://postera.ai/). The title above is quite a mouthful (we used all 80 characters) so we'll begin by breaking down what it means. What is medicinal chemistry? It’s part of discovering new drugs. A drug hunter decides what disease to focus on and then selects ‘targets’: usually proteins whose activity is key to the disease. Then they look for a molecule that can ‘hit’ that target and stimulate a response which will hopefully have beneficial effects. Developing such a molecule that is potent and safe is medicinal chemistry.Despite it being a crucial part of drug development, this field has relied on trial-and-error approaches—a very expensive way to muddle toward a drug. Where computational tools have been used, they have emphasized the 'best' designs without any awareness of what it would take to physically make the drug in a lab and test it. Our approach is to apply computational methods that know how to make these de

Ask HN: How to avoid losing a baby video that “violates YouTube's guidelines”?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23403759Years ago I uploaded to YouTube a 30 minute home video of my kids when they were babies. I wanted to avoid losing the video to a hard drive crash, and also wanted to be able to share it with family members. I never shared it publicly.Big mistake! Now years later, YouTube emailed me, and informed me that my home video "violates guidelines". My guess is that a short sequence showing a 6 month old baby naked in a bathtub triggered some kind of porn filter :(.Of course I appealed, YouTube's decision, but to no avail. The worst part is that the YouTube UI prevents downloading my video and storing it somewhere else! Four days from now YouTube will delete my home video, and it will be gone forever. What can I do to avoid losing my video?
