Ask HN: What tasks cost money through a UI but are free in code?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49294288As someone who only recently started getting their feet wet thanks to vibe coding, I am kind of amazed at all the free tools out there. An example: ffmpeg (which I've used for a long time) is a classic case of "if you can figure it out, it's free; if you can't, I can sell you a shovel" with virtually every video downloader tool out there using it. Users who don't know about it must either rely on the shady tier of online video downloaders or pay for some of the better ones. I used to think there was a hard-coded limit to downloading files in 4K until I realised yt-dlp and ffmpeg existed.Another example: TIL the Bluesky Jetstream protocol is completely free, which is amazing to me because of all the data and inference you can get from it (similar APIs, albeit from much larger social datasets like Google Maps and X, are not free.It seems that the entry barrier to a lot of useful tools over the last two decades has been a minimal ability to code. Since that barrier has now dropped, would y

For West Virginia Engineer, Home Is Where the Heart Is… and NASA, Toohttps://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/goddard/for-west-virginia-engineer-home-is-where-the-heart-is-and-nasa-too/Growing up in Grafton, West Virginia, engrossed in Star Wars and all things science fiction, Fletcher Newell had an early interest in space exploration. That interest only grew when, in 2013, his fourth-grade class took a field trip to a nearby NASA facility he had not yet heard of – NASA’s Katherine Johnson Independent Verification […]

So if a tree falls in the woods..." (I censored the F word, but it transcribed just fine.)TL;DR: LymeScribe is local speech to text for Mac and Windows: dictate into any app, or drop in a recording and get a transcript with speaker labels, and nothing goes to a server you don't own. On a machine that can handle it, it all runs right there. On anything that can't, or anywhere you'd rather keep transcription in one place, one computer does the work for the rest of the network. Offices care about the second one, because the audio and the transcripts never leave hardware they control. This whole thing started as a command line program I built to transcribe and label speakers in aud

Show HN: An agent engine with no SDK, just TOML and webhookshttps://substructure.ai/I was looking for a way to add AI agents to multiple systems that I maintain.I had a few requirements:- I work in multiple programming languages, so it needs to work for all of them.- I can control how tools access my system.- I can override the agent loop to try different patterns.- I can iterate on the loop without handling durability, streaming, and the rest of the nitty gritty.- I can iterate locally before deploying.- I can self host.Nothing existed that worked across programming languages, so I built it.It's not an SDK. It's a server that handles durability, streaming, MCP connections, LLM calls and connecting to channels like Slack. You can override every single step of the agent loop by handling a webhook. But you don't have to override anything, you don't even need to handle the webhook. You can define the agent in a TOML file and chat with your agent via Slack in minutes.Point it at your backend to receive a webhook at every decision point. The engine sends the current step and

Show HN: Read it easy – Read-only code editor with an improved Go to Definitionhttps://www.readiteasy.app/I built a desktop app that improves the UI/UX for reading source code . Code editors/IDEs have many features, but I didn't make the best use of them when reading the source code. So, I designed the app by picking up some features for source code reading. It is read-only because it is intended to focus users on reading. Switching from your favorite code editor or IDE to the app can help with context switching from coding to code reading. I wonder if this context switch can help people focus on reading. One of the features I designed specifically for this app is "Animated Go to Definition," which works by double-clicking a function name in the code and is designed around some principles I use when reading code. This feature exactly embodies the ideas and concepts of this app. Now, Animated Go to Definition supports JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, and C#.AI empowers documentation in software development, but it does not always eliminate the need to read source code. Show HN: I built a life planner that has only "one page"https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49282537I spent 5 years working a f*cking to-do app and being a loser. Here's what I learnt.Life planners don't work if they're too simple (e.g. Apple Notes for everything). They also don't work if they're too complicated (e.g. Notion templates). They must be adequate, such as having basic fucking hierarchy where you can have tasks and sub-tasks. They must also be centralized, because reminders don't fucking work if I can't see them because they're hidden in 5 different places. The resultant version is https://beta.actions.life. It's free forever for early beta users, and you can try it without going through some bullshit sign-up flow.I hope you can tell me what's good and what's shit about the app, so I can make it better for you. Thanks.

Show HN: Tmux-agent-switcher: see which Claude/Codex agents need your attentionhttps://github.com/Ymirke/tmux-agent-switcherSince the start of this year I've coded pretty much exclusively by running multiple AI agents in parallel.Having tried a bunch of tools for managing them, I kept coming back to tmux. This is becaues I want to run them on a separate machine as I like being able to close my laptop, or even have long running tasks continue even if I board a flight without WiFi.So I built tmux-agent-switcher, a tmux plugin that gives me a better overview of all of them without replacing tmux as the core tech for managing processes on the server.Ctrl+n opens a sidebar showing windows across all sessions. The sidebar shows the agent's state as icons. After selecting an Idle session it also checkmarks it, so you get indicator if you've seen it or not. It also has Vim and "number-based" navigation styles.I didn't want to make a wrapper that would own how agents are launched, so I still run claude or codex normally. The plugin passively looks at tmux metadata, and visible terminal output to infer the agent stat

They cannot move or be removed. Every row and every column contains exactly one gate.Your goal is to leave as many of the grid's 30 non-gate cells empty as possible in the given number of moves.# ShapesEvery tile and gate has one of two shapes:SquareCircleA tile can be removed only when both its *color* and its *shape* match the gate it passes through.# Making a MoveSwipe any row or column to rotate its tiles and empty spaces by one position.Anything that passes an edge wraps around to the opposite edge. The gate remains fixed in place.During each rotation, exactly one tile or empty space passes through the gate. That interaction may change the passing tile and the gate. Everything else simply moves to its new position.#

We built a job board where the employers aren't human. Here's what brokehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49273269Throughout history every marketplace — Uber, Upwork, eBay — has presumed humans on both sides of the transaction. It's baked so deep that nobody questions it. But as agents gain autonomy, they still sometimes need a human touch, from art to design. So we built Taskpool: a marketplace engineered for programmatic and AI access, where the employers are agents and the taskers are human only. Launching today. The flow:1. Agents post tasks they need real-world help with2. (Optionally) review applicants3. Hire any number of them4. Review the evidence / results5. Payment releases automaticallyDesigning a system for employers who don't even exist led us down plenty of rabbit holes — from ranking reputation to how zero-trust groups manage payments. Here's what we learned.Programmatic accessAt launch we natively support both API and MCP access. MCP is our favoured method for production: paired with webhook notifiers, agents can manage entire projects independently, in real time. Docs: https://task
