Ask HN: What should I learn to be competitive in the next five years?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9989152About me: I've been working for the last 7 years for a Fortune 400 off-shore after completing my degree in computer science. It's been a smooth time, I guess I have been good in my position; my time has been spent developing C#, .net websites, little bit of Javascript, TSQL and PL/SQL (although it's getting rusty). On my time I got into the "I'm going to get rich developing for iPhone" wagon but it did never materialize on a successful project, I did also built an EFI around the Arduino with custom shields, maybe one of the projects I've like the most even tough "it's not my field".What I like to do: Creating the shields, playing with Eagle CAD, learning the basic electronics, and get into a challenging project would describe what I would like to keep doing. Why do I ask: I were interviewed for another position within the company but the "new" tendencies of IT are not something I am proficient at, I have liked more frameworks, creating APIs and back end development. Should I jump into l

Ask HN: My startup has failed, what are the largest companies in SF proper?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9916983After nearly a year of trying to tackle a really tough Fintech problem (Reducing risk by shifting moral hazard in a particular asset class), I failed getting the agreements we need and I have decided to shut the company down. The people that were working with me on the problem have now found other opportunities and I am trying to figure out what company would be best to join.I am only 1/8 programmer at best, but I have a really strong finance background so I believe the best place for me to help a company would be in their finance department (FP&A, M&A or investor relations) which are all functions of large companies.I have worked pretty hard at generating a list of companies with a major office or headquarters in SF. Does anyone know of any others I am missing? Does anyone have any other advice while looking? My plan is to reach out to finance people at each of the companies I am interested in, setup a coffee and figure out where the best fit is.I would also be interested in joining a

Ask HN: What should be the point of being rich?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9899141It is clear to everyone that being wealthy is a great asset in our world. Having money allows one to get good quality food, access to health care, good education, stimulating leisure, etc. However, it is generally accepted that it is unfair for poor people to not have access to a lot of resources, like health care or education. Therefore governments take measures and use part of tax money to make these resources accessible to low-income households. Some examples: - education with scholarships - health care with lower premium/rates - internet recently with a project to offer $9 plans to low-income households - public transportation with lower fares etcThe way I understand these measures is that the goal of making money should not be to provide a good education to your children, or keep them healthy for example - since society tries to support low-income households and helps them get access to these resources regardless of income. Now, I know all these programs are not good substitutes for

Ask HN: I keep trying and failing at startups, what am I doing wrong?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9881338I'm 34, based in London, and for the past 5 years I've built and launched several ventures. Each of them failed. I'm not dumb, and I get that I need to be technical and have some domain knowledge preferably. Hence, I've taught myself Ruby (just the basics) and design all my products on my own using Photoshop and sometimes HTML, CSS. I've spent 1000s of hours (I kid you not) designing my products. I almost always manage to convince a good developer to join me. And yet the products keep failing. Here are some:Current: Online money transfer - transfercorp.co.uk Get your energy billing issues sorted - getpowerhelp.com Check if your name is on a sanctions list - stoplosttransfers.comPreviously (repos are on git): Reloved - a mobile shopping app for home decor products Research Nation - a trip advisor for market research reportsTo be perfectly honest, I've never had more than 5 users for any of these products. And that's after investing between 50-150USD on Facebook and Google Ads..I realise

MacOS is the new Windowshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9816994I'm typing this on my late 2010 MacBook Air. Recently I was starting having problems with it (you know when you type your password and the system does not recognize your key presses, etc.). And I thought, “Oh, ok, I have to accept that we live in a world of planned obsolesce (how else faster-than-a-gigahertz multi-gigabyte-RAM machine could become slow? If it is capable of real-time response to user's actions, it should respond in real-time) and I have to upgrade to get my job done”.So I switched to this new aesthetically marvelous wonder: an early 2015 13 inch MacBook Pro. In 5 days I'm using it the machine restarted two (or three?) times "because of problems" though it has much less software installed than my old rock-stable-in-comparison MacBook Air. And now I'm installing an OS update which already restarted my system twice. First it restarted the system, than it said, “Ooops, I cannot verify the update”, fiddled with it for several more minutes, restarted-downloaded-restarted... W

Show HN: Minimalist HN reader with material designhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9755681Hello everyone!, this is a app I have being working on recently. I know there are number of HN readers on android. But couldn't find a one suitable for daily use. So I started developing this app. News articles, comments open in default browser of the device. Click on title of the item to open the article and anywhere else to open comments. Pull down to refresh. Swipe left and right to change the tabs. This is only the first phase of application. Lot of functions yet to be implement (you can read more in Google play listing). Before developing further I would love to have some feedback. BTW I'm a CS undergraduate.Thank you.Image :http://www.kasungamlath.com/assets/hnyc_framed.png Application :https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kasungamlath.hackernewsAny feedback is appreciated, thanks!
