Ask HN: A Non commercialized project for 2024https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38498386Greetings HN membersAs 2024 is approaching I want to give back to the community of Internet users (HNers included) & anyone who is selling: from products to services. Should I make this project available to the public? -> https://imgur.com/a/vlb6fMb---PAST--- Compared to today's link aggregation services and limited features hidden behind a paywall, I found the need to create a link aggregator that EXPLAINS my links as well as for selling my freelance services, to properly guide my potential customers. Tell HN: I learnt some new things while working on my projecthttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36454949Recently I worked on a simulation analysis which taught me several things:- To get the most out of Python, you really need efficient libraries like Numpy. I started off my project in pure Python and some Pandas. But soon I realized it was painfully slow and looked for better solutions.- Polars looked like a good Pandas alternative, but some googling revealed that it could be slower than Numpy. Although it's easy to work with dataframes (e.g., you can select a column by calling its name), I converted all my code to use Numpy and suddenly saw huge speed boost. But that wasn't the end of it. I was now in a rabbit hole...- Vectorization helped a lot with speed as well. I learnt that using the right tool (in this case, Numpy) guides you to do better and vectorize operations, whereas Pandas didn't enforce that technique on me. Despite the initial hurdle, I realized that vectorization made my code much more readable and easier to follow.- I then parallelized my code to utilize all 10 cores ofJun 24, 2023 2:41 AM

Show HN: Variety Quiz - Simple quiz to understand the balance of your lifestylehttps://www.varietyquiz.com/Hi HN,My name is Clay and I live in Austin. I built this simple quiz 'app' called Variety Quiz as part of a larger project I'm working on around lifestyle variety and its relationship with how we feel about ourselves as people. This feels a bit strange to post (it's clunky) but I think it's time I start putting things out there. You'll see that there is a callout to Self Sport which is the larger app/project I've been working on tied to this. It’s a much more professional effort and will launch later this summer. So why Variety Quiz?Variety Quiz is a novel tool to check in with your lifestyle and satisfaction levels in general (across key life needs). This helps to understand how you're structuring your attention today and consider changes that may be worth making.I think a lot of people spend years never really thinking about their lifestyle and the 'balance' (not a great word, but a common word for this) they've created. We all have things that make us up and form our identity — BeliefJun 20, 2023 3:20 PM

Ask HN: Have you ever experienced eBay refusing to pay youhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33471484I recently sold about $2500 worth of total sales on ebay. After they took their ~$500 fee they have now restricted my account and requested information to confirm my identity, address, and proof of owning the product. Fine, whatever, I send the the requested info (scanned my Drivers License, provided a bill with my name and address on it, and provided all receipts of the products). The items I was selling were the codes for in game items for Call of Duty Modern Warfare II. They have a promotion running where if you buy a meal they give a code for in game items. Since they are not available everywhere in the world I figured I would attempt to sell some and eBay was explicitly told what I was selling with them never saying that was any kind of issue. They are now telling me that unless I can provide an invoice they will not be unlocking my account and will be holding the $2000 that was supposed to be paid out and I will be out approximately $900 that I spent obtaining the codes. SaaS software as a part of big company's softwarehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26268858Hi, I am hoping to get some clarification regarding a business strategy. My SaaS start-up (stealth mode) is developing software for a specific industrial application. One of the big companies in the field who offers generic software feels that our focused software will be a nice add-on to theirs to provide value for their customers, who are a sizeable subset (15%) of our target market. They are asking us to integrate our software as an addon to their main software but without our startup's name for this specific subset of customers. At my previous employer, I had collaboration with this big company, and they are aware of our potential and the capabilities of the software. We initially planned to sell our software as subscription @ $ XX to general customer base. Now, they want to sell it to their customers without our name. My question is what premium do we charge this big company? The premium is not for using our name and developing our brand with customers but at the same time, we getFeb 25, 2021 9:57 PM

Ask HN: Blockchainshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10032099More and more noise seems to be appearing about blockchains. I see the small benefit of use in transactions between organisations, but am struggling for the case for private blockchains and some points of cryptocurrency in general. I don’t know if this is the best place to ask, but everything online is full of jargon and is inaccessible to me.I have a few questions:- What are the benefits of using a private blockchain (should I be thinking of it as a replacement to a General Ledger?)? Is this just another name for a ledger with auditable history?- Can a blockchain exist without mining or without a currency/coin? Will all private blockchains need a “coin”? (eg the Goldman Sachs coin or ABC plumbing coin?)And another couple of broader questions- What keeps people interested in a blockchain (and currency) once all of the easy mining is done eg, for people joining later?- I see that transaction costs for bitcoin keep rising, is that related to the size of the blockchain?- I thought bitcoinAug 10, 2015 12:27 AM
