AI Gets Trapped in a Circular Loop on Climate Sciencehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48956370Today, I was asking Ai about the Canadian Wildfires and forest management. Instantly, the ai resorted to following the common narrative, and pushed macro human-caused climate change as an “objective fact.” I wanted to push back on the logic of this, because this narrative goes against core principles of scientific transparency. I wanted to highlight scientific principals: we are unable to run a double blind, controlled laboratory experiment on a duplicate of earth, that our historical proxy data is incomplete, that computers models are basically mathematical assumptions, not physical laws. This time the ai model abandoned the canned scripts, and completely broke character admitting that framing a predictive theory as an absolute “fact” for the masses is an ethical failure and it damages scientific transparency. Here is exactly where the turning point of the conversation that caused the models logic to completely collapse “ User: if science cant claim something is a definitive fact thenJul 18, 2026 9:03 AM

Show HN: Duiduidui is a new Chinese dictionary and flashcard apphttps://duiduidui.app/en/Hello everyone! I'm a solo developer, and intermediate Chinese learner, and I just launched a new Chinese app I want to share with you.My own Chinese language study stack used to be Pleco (and Goog Translate) for dictionary lookups, and then Anki for flashcard reviews, with a lot of manual copy-pasting in between. Which worked... okay. But the two sides never talked to each other. Pleco doesn't know what I'm studying, and Anki doesn't know anything about Chinese. So it treats 好吃 and 好 as totally unrelated cards, even though getting one right obviously tells you something about the other. So I built duiduidui! (对对对), which is basically those two tools fused together, with a study engine that actually models how Chinese is structured:- A dictionary with 200k+ entries, always available/searchable offline (characters, words, phrases, sample sentences, speech audio) where everything is linked. Every character links to the words it appears in, and the radicals it's built from, so you can (forJul 13, 2026 7:15 PM

Show HN: CrowdRank – live leaderboards for internet argumentshttps://crowdrank.appHi HN. I built CrowdRank, a small web app where people vote through head-to-head matchups and the results become a live leaderboard.Backstory:A few years ago, while I was learning to code, I wanted to build a Tinder-style voting app to rank the funniest characters from The Office. I hit a lot of dead ends, mostly on the frontend, and abandoned it.Now with a bit more technical background i rebuilt the idea as a more general platform. The backend/API is Laravel, and I used AI heavily to help build the frontend because somehow centering a div still finds ways to humble me.What did I end up building?A web based platform for ranking candidates inside different topics. There are no community-created topics yet. For now, I seeded a bunch of debates and used an Elo style ranking system, similar to chess ratings, to build a live leaderboard for each debate. No signup is needed to try it.A few example debates:- who’s actually funny in The Office? NASA’s STORIE Mission to Tell Tale of Earth’s Ring Currenthttps://science.nasa.gov/science-research/heliophysics/nasas-storie-mission-to-tell-tale-of-earths-ring-current/Earth’s magnetic field is like a powerful trap. It lures electrically charged particles in space, near our planet, and snares them in an invisible, doughnut-shaped pen around Earth known as the ring current. This captive swarm of charged particles plays an important role in how Earth reacts to changing conditions in space, called space weather, which […]May 1, 2026 3:31 PM

Show HN: Helm Terminal – Free portfolio intelligence that tells you what to dohttps://helmterminal.devHi HN,I'm the solo founder of Helm Terminal (helmterminal.dev). It's a free portfolio analytics tool that connects to your accounts via Plaid and surfaces actionable insights and intelligence. Concentration risk, tax-loss harvesting, earnings exposure, idle cash, sector drift, etc. Automatically, every day.Every other portfolio tracker/brokerage I've tried showed me balances and pie charts but never informed me what to do or what was going on. I'd check my accounts, see things were generally "fine", and move on. Then I realized I'd been sitting on thousands of dollars in unharvested tax losses, 60%+ of my portfolio was exposed to tech, and I didn't know half of my positions were reporting earnings soon.Helm is the tool I built to fix all of these issues, and a tool I wish existed. It runs on a set of intelligence engines on top of your connected accounts and gives you a prioritized inbox of things worth doing, as well as news tailored to your holdings worth looking at. Show HN: I built a $9 Ahrefs alternative because raw SEO data is cheaphttps://idiotproofseo.com/Like many solo devs and indie hackers, I was paying $100+/mo for enterprise SEO tools (Ahrefs, Semrush) but only using about 5% of their features. I really just needed basic keyword research, SERP difficulty analysis, and simple rank tracking.I wanted to see what the actual floor was for raw SEO data if you stripped away the fluff and enterprise bloat.I spent the last few months wiring together different data sources to find out. I got my costs down to a few cents per report and because the data is so cheap to fetch on-demand, I packaged it into a minimalist tool which strictly focuses on the essential elements of SEO:A keyword analyzer which pulls the top 10 search results, audits them, and flags weak spots (like low DA sites or forums like Reddit) to calculate a realistic difficulty score, a keyword finder which generates hundreds of scored long-tail variations, and a rank tracker with email notifications.Because the costs on my end are so lean, I don't need to charge $100/mo - so I Apr 5, 2026 12:05 PM

Show HN: Veil – Dark mode PDFs without destroying images, runs in the browserhttps://veil.simoneamico.com/Hi HN! here's a tool I just deployed that renders PDFs in dark mode without destroying the images. Internal and external links stay intact, and I decided to implement export since I'm not a fan of platform lock-in: you can view your dark PDF in your preferred reader, on any device. It's a side project born from a personal need first and foremost. When I was reading in the factory the books that eventually helped me get out of it, I had the problem that many study materials and books contained images and charts that forced me, with the dark readers available at the time, to always keep the original file in multitasking since the images became, to put it mildly, strange. I hope it can help some of you who have this same need. I think it could be very useful for researchers, but only future adoption will tell. With that premise, I'd like to share the choices that made all of this possible. To do so, I'll walk through the three layers that veil creates from the original PDF:- Layer 1: CSS fMar 26, 2026 11:47 AM
