Ask HN: How do I market to consumers as a solo dev about to go to uni?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44289162Hi!I've spent my gap year making a language learning tool[0]. It's been somewhat successful, but I really don't have a sustainable marketing strategy (e.g. SEO or ads) - it's all from me sharing it, making blog posts, etc. I'm going to uni in ~2.5 months, and I'd like to be able to keep it growing, even as most of my attention goes towards my studies. My users are really happy with it, the conversion rate is good, and there's been a surprising amount of word of mouth from them already, but it's just not quite enough.I've had some limited success from Reddit text ads, but their algorithm is determined to optimise for cost per click, rather than conversions, and it's only getting worse over time. Text in general is a lot easier for me to work with.X ads don't work at all. Nor do Google or Reddit banner ads, or Adwords.SEO is an expensive labyrinth. I've made some progress there, paying for some backlinks and having a high quality blog, but not enough to rank for the keywords that matter.

Technical co-founder, built everything. Offered 4%. Oofhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44287568I wanted to share a cautionary tale and get your take:Note - I had AI help me turn my billion-page story to a reasonable length.I understand I was naive in this, but I was trying so hard to do my best work that I didn’t look at the whole situation objectively. That’s on me.The truth is, no calculator or startup blog can account for all the variables in a situation like this — execution, risk, emotional labor, trust, money, time. So I’m turning to the real-world experience of people here. Appreciate any thoughts.I spent 7+ months as the technical co-founder on a startup. I built everything — backend, frontend, auth, UI/UX, integrations, hosting. There was no product before I joined, just an 8-year-old idea (yes, I know) and some outdated PDFs (just designs). I also paid out of pocket for tools and brought in a second dev a few times to help with tedious work so I could focus on core functionality. I spent money while they spent zero, so I could, now in hindsight, make their dreams come

Show HN: I made SEO backlink exchange platform using vector embeddingshttps://www.babylovegrowth.ai/Hey HN,I’m a solopreneur and have been in the SaaS space for the past 3 years. My last three startups failed, and a common challenge in all of them was figuring out how to reach my audience. SEO always seemed like the answer, but I didn’t know where to start. It felt overwhelming...Soo many technical terms like keyword research, clustering, SERP, semantics, topical authority… I could go on.That’s where my idea for my next startup came from -> building SEO tool which runs on auto-pilot. The complexity of SEO is hidden behind a simple UI and everything happens automatically behind the scene, even publishing and backlink exchange! I have been working on it for the past 8 months and already have 500+ registered users (not all paying ofc) (mainly got them through reddit)My biggest bet (and competitor differentiator) is the ABC backlink exchange platform we just launched. With it, we are getting our customers 4-7 backlinks per month, naturally placed within articles. No more paying for backl

Ask HN: Develop more intentional computer usage via physical unlocking device?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44266295I get sucked into my laptop very easily. Games, news, online chores, even work.As soon as I tear my attention away from the abstract computer world -- getting up to pee, answering the door, running out of battery -- I'm back in my body, looking around at todos, noticing the time. I'm suddenly better equipped to be intentional about what I want to do.Maybe I don't make perfect decisions every time, but if I were regularly interrupted from the virtual mindspace, and forced to get up and, say, tap my computer to a physical device on the wall downstairs, at least I would have a fighting chance to consider what I actually want to be doing. I could grow that muscle over time.I've tried lots of apps and life hacks, but they're all too easily overridden by my pleasure-seeking lost-in-the-computer brain.SO I ASK HN: DOES SOMETHING LIKE THE FOLLOWING EXIST?I want my computer to effectively lock up after X minutes of usage until I unlock it with a physical device (that I would secure next to the

Show HN: I built a cleaner YouTube – no ads, sponsors, or doomscrollinghttps://skipcut.com/Hi HN!I built SkipCutit’s like an ad-free, distraction-free YouTube with useful extras: background play, SponsorBlock, dark mode, playlist support, local history, download/share buttons… and it works on any device. No install. No login. Here’s the best part: It works just by replacing "youtube" with "skipcut" in the video link. You skip all the boring stuff — ads, sponsors, intros, silence, filler and just watch what matters. Why it’s different: No comments. No suggested videos. No clickbait.I made this for my kid, I create a playlist and just send a SkipCut link like: https://skipcut.com?list=xyz123 It plays only those videos and stops the doomscrolling.Just replace youtube with skipcut in the URL of any video Example: https://www.skipcut.com/watch?v=abc123No signup requiredWould love your feedback, ideas, and bug reports!Try it: https://skipcut.com
