When my website was 95% complete, I got one of my friends, Zake* to create my logos about a month before we went live. We agreed that I’d pay Zake $300 for the logos. Zake changed their mind & said I should rather give them 5% of my business, co-founder title & a “seat at the table”. This was 1.5 years ago & it was their initial offer, I didn’t negotiate with them.We didn’t sign any type of contract at all (bad idea, I know). We verbally agreed that Zake would a) post on social media 5 days a week b) do our SEO c) update the website images once a month, minor things like changing the website banner d) make any misc documents look good (no content just aesthetics) ie our pitch deck e) attend our weekly team meetings. Email has become live chat, despite more suitable platforms existing. I first saw this with Blackberry, but this is now prevalent in white-collar industries. People expect rapid responses. This is hugely detrimetal to morale and work-life balance.Fire-and-forget. Optional bonus: workload shuffling. We all send emails like "Here's X, let me know if/when Y" and tick-off a todo item. But this is emblematic of a terrible workflow: get it off my desk ASAP and off-load responsibility to someone else. Inevitably this multiplies someone else's workload and encourages short-termism. The individual looks productive to management, since their throughput is high, but they're contributing to a pervasive syrup which clogs the business and lowers morale.Wor

This current outbreak started about a month ago with cases slowly starting to tick up. About two weeks ago it became clear to me that we would soon be entering lockdown as the omicron cases won't stop increasing, imported as well as local. Last Friday there were about a 1000 new daily cases nationally, higher than at the peak in 2020. Since there is no clear change in policy, and already a lot is being done, there is no reason to believe that infections won't keep increasing exponentially. Today, Sunday, daily new cases reached 2000-3000.Schools, gym, parks, and most other public venues have closed. Also, to clarify, my university isn't very theoretical in its approach), and because of my circumstances it's too late for me to switch majors.I originally wanted to be a physicist, but I switched midway into my first year because CS has got more financial security, physics isn't as glamorous as pop science would have you believe, academia might be a bad fit, etc etc, and I thought I'd like it. Hell, everyone thought I was in love with CS until I started complaining their ears off, because I SEEM like I'd like it. It's to the point that it affects my work. I do submit my work on time unless life gets in the way, and I do pretty decently actually, but getting through the thick wall of "fuck fuck fuck i signed up for this" and boredom takes a lot of effort — more than I thought, and I don't have any side projects because I'm not interested in anything.
