Ask HN: Which is the least sloppy and claudeism free model you have used?I feel like recent models have been consistently getting more sloppy and increasingly claude-ism heavy (load-bearing seams galore) with every new release.I was hoping this trend would reverse in newer major version releases but I just tried out Opus 5 and it's similarly shit at writing. Fable is slightly better but not by far (and of course ridiculously more expensive). Adding skills helps but only mildly and not much at all for longer prose.Have you guys used any model lately that you liked for its writing style? I remember being pleasantly surprised by GPT-4.5 but since that's been discontinued, I am on the lookout for a better candidate.

Show HN: Open-weight OCR got so cheap I had to share itThis was not supposed to become a product.When PaddleOCR-VL-1.6 dropped, independent benchmarks put it at the top of document parsing models. I had to try it. I needed a provider, but there simply isn't one ready for production that I would trust.So i set one up myself. I assumed that even after getting it running, serving a vision-language model would be expensive.It turns out the opposite is true. Once I had it running properly, the cost was absurdly low. At proper GPU utilization, the cost is only around $1 per 1,000 pages.The nearest competitors are either much lower quality (Azure Read) or absurdly expensive (Extend or Reducto). Even Mistral OCR 4 which is really good and pretty cheap is still 4x more expensive.So I had to share it. I made the endpoitns public, and vibe-coded a simple dashboard.Let me know what you think!

Show HN: Poddie – A local-first, text-based video and podcast editorHi HN, I've been itching to start a podcast this year and needed a way to edit the footage quickly. I'm too cheap to pay for Descript, (and as a dev with tendency to build tools instead of working on the real task) so I just built my own local version of Descript which I call Poddie.Poddie does it e2e for free: it generates transcript using local Whisper model, lets you edit by reading through the transcript and deleting words, auto-trims silence, offers video/audio/captions export with optional caption burn-in. You can also do waveform editing for more precise cuts if desired.I'm open sourcing it so other creators could try it out and use it for their own workflows.Happy to hear any feedback!

Show HN: Crisp – Open-source display manager for macOS (DDC, HiDPI, presets)I recently bought a new 1440p monitor and connected it to my mac, but at native resolution the UI felt so tiny and unfamiliar. I'm fairly new to mac in general so I checked my options for scaling, but quickly learnt (afaik) that this wasn't a thing for external monitors. I found some options in BetterDisplay and Lunar, but it felt stupid to pay for a feature that should be included. FreeDisplay seemed like the perfect option, but when I tried it on my mac it didn't work for me. Development seemed stale so rather than adding a PR, I forked it and fixed it. After that I wanted to do some changes and add some features, which suddenly ended up in a full rewrite.It covers the thing I initially wanted, which was HiDPI, but I also wanted it to look native, so I added some native elements. Plaid recently started allowing personal developer accounts, and this provides free access to your own financial data. Existing options either require manual csv imports, or route through paid relays: Actual Budget syncs via the SimpleFIN Bridge (a third-party service between you and your data), Firefly III needs an external importer wired to an aggregator. PocketLens connects your own Plaid keys directly and transactions, balances, and brokerage holdings show up (no fee).
