Ask HN: Why Connected Home Appliances?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49278761Asking for a magazine writer for a feature story about "IoT" connected home appliances. The primary question behind this feature is: “I have to now use an app to operate my washing machine. Why?!”The feature explores why this is happening, what technology is behind that, and how this trend (?) might evolve as consumers increasingly complain about app overwhelm.Any pointers to details on how these systems work would be welcome. If you have worked on any of the underlying software, the writer would love to interview you or communicate via email. They have given me some questions they are hoping to answer (see first comment below). Thanks!

Show HN: Tmux-agent-switcher: see which Claude/Codex agents need your attentionhttps://github.com/Ymirke/tmux-agent-switcherSince the start of this year I've coded pretty much exclusively by running multiple AI agents in parallel.Having tried a bunch of tools for managing them, I kept coming back to tmux. This is becaues I want to run them on a separate machine as I like being able to close my laptop, or even have long running tasks continue even if I board a flight without WiFi.So I built tmux-agent-switcher, a tmux plugin that gives me a better overview of all of them without replacing tmux as the core tech for managing processes on the server.Ctrl+n opens a sidebar showing windows across all sessions. The sidebar shows the agent's state as icons. After selecting an Idle session it also checkmarks it, so you get indicator if you've seen it or not. It also has Vim and "number-based" navigation styles.I didn't want to make a wrapper that would own how agents are launched, so I still run claude or codex normally. The plugin passively looks at tmux metadata, and visible terminal output to infer the agent stat

Show HN: Tried some experiments with architecture for Long term memory for LLMhttps://github.com/faisalhussain-devs/MindCache/tree/collapsed_treeThe main ideas that survived the experimentation are:using four memory types — user, knowledge, episodic, and decision memories, each with different lifecycles, different roles and different token budget in the retrieved context. Decision analysis + anchors — decisions can evolve overtime so they can be active or superseded or conditional instead of remaining as unrelated memories. we keep the track of decision memory which is active, superseded or conditional with additional context and using such active decisions related to the query as anchors to further retrieve memories using lexical bm25 often helps. Smart injection — New memories aren't simply assigned to a topic based on similarity. An LLM-guided ingestion step uses the existing topic structure as context to decide where a memory belongs and how it relates to what is already there. This lets the hierarchy grow dynamically instead of becoming a collection of isolated memory nodes.Hierarchical summaries — MindCache adapts the sta

Show HN: Silent Shark – tactical map-based WWII submarine simhttps://silentshark.app/I posted an early beta of this game a few months ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48180924 - May 2026 (45 comments) and today released the full version. You all gave extremely valuable and helpful feedback back then - thank you so much for that. It led to a lot of improvements:* I reworked the onboarding tutorials multiple times for clarity, adding protections to stop players from shooting themselves in the foot* I dropped the Comic Sans-reminiscent font and replaced it with Barlow Condensed* I improved the layout of the dials for all screen sizes to keep players on top of things* I added an "Angle-on-Bow recognition trainer" for practicing estimates of ship anglesFor the full version, I fleshed out a full campaign with radio intelligence, patrol zones, and lots of historical events impacting things like which naval bases still exist, which types of missions are given, and how reliable your torpedoes are. (And just for fun, I added a full cribbage mini-game as well!)Now, just m

Show HN: Programmable timer web app (for gym workouts or stretching sessions)https://timer.jotaen.netOver the last couple of months, I’ve been building a timer web app for myself that I use for workout and stretching sessions. My main use-case is gym routines that consist of repeatable sequences, e.g. where you are holding certain positions for a set time (rinse and repeat). The app counts down the program, beeps, and reads the activities out loud. Two things (I suppose) are special about it:- The timers are “programmable”, so you can freely express your own routines and procedures in a declarative notation.- The app is all static (no backend): the entire program is encoded in the URL and can be bookmarked or shared/transferred via QR-code.You can check it out at https://timer.jotaen.net, optionally with a demo program pre-loaded: https://timer.jotaen.net/#demo.Source code is at https://github.com/jotaen/timer. I’ve also written up a small behind-the-scenes on my blog: https://www.jotaen.net/SAKxq

As of today, even the search engine lite.duckduckgo.com/lite/ (in Google Chrome) barely works when searching on H and 3G mobile networks — not to mention EDGE. When I try to open a website on EDGE, the browser displays the message: DNS_PROBE_STARTED.

Show HN: Apollodorus Video – batch video editor in the browser that runs locallyhttps://apollodorus.pages.dev/videoA few weeks ago, I made a browser-based batch image editor called Apollodorus. The idea was simple enough: pass in as many images as I want, have the same operations (crop, resize, watermark, etc) applied to all of them, and then it spits out all those images with the edits applied. Everything is done client-side too, which is good for privacy, and also good because I was worried about slow WiFi and bandwidth limits. The overall idea was simple, it worked fine in practice, and everything was good. Then a little while ago, I wondered: could I do this with video too? After some research, I realized the answer is "technically yes, but it's probably not a great idea." The biggest problem is how demanding it is to edit video if it's all being done client-side, especially via web frameworks like FFmpeg-wasm. From a hardware perspective, editing multiple images is extremely easy, but the same edits on multiple videos though... well, that can get really demanding. And what if it's being done on

Development Mindset for AI Programminghttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49275608Most software engineers that learned to build things in the past 10-15 years have a move-fast-break-things mentality. I've found that AI coding really amplifies the downsides of this mentality (pushing broken slop to users), and further depresses the need for very clear thinking on what needs to be built.Since there is no longer an associated cost with building so time spent thinking about what to build is very low.To rectify this situation in my own life, I've been using the V-model while programming with AI agents. This is effectively the meticulous process that medical devices, spaceships etc. are built using. The core idea of the V-model is that if you are able to describe what you want with great articulation, the process leads to it being built correctly.Telling my AI agents to follow the V-model has been a tremendous benefit in terms of getting bug-free, production-ready code.Any similar experiences?
