Show HN: Mindfuse – A voice-only app for anonymous 1-on-1 conversationshttps://mindfuse.io/Hey HN,I built Mindfuse because I missed having real conversations online. It’s a simple concept: You press a button and get matched with someone, anonymously, for a voice-only conversation. No usernames, no profiles, no feeds. Just two people talking. The goal is to create quiet, meaningful spaces in a noisy, performative internet. It’s live on iOS now. Still early — small user base, no monetization, just people talking.Happy to answer any questions or feedback. I’d especially love to hear from anyone building in the audio/social space or interested in digital minimalism, mindful tech, or mental health. Thanks for reading.

Show HN: Turn your football knowledge into a challenge gamehttps://apps.apple.com/es/app/who-is-that-player-football/id6744461899Hi HN I'm Wyeth, a software engineer who recently started teaching myself mobile development after work hours. After 6 months of coding in my free time (mostly late nights and weekends), I just launched Who Is That Player | Football — a mobile app where you guess football (soccer) players based on their image and team badge. From that core mechanic, I built different game modes (by league, by country, by club), daily challenges, a global ranking system, tasks and rewards, bonus systems, and more. It’s kind of like a casual trivia game but with competitive layers for football fans. This was a 100% solo effort: design, code, assets, backend, testing. No budget, no team, just a passion project. I’d love your feedback — on UX, tech stack, monetization ideas, or just what you’d expect from a football fan app. Here you have download links:Android: https://goo.su/bDN0hbNiOS iOS: https://goo.su/dU6QwHappy to answer anything! How to get an initial user base for a consumer app with no money and no audiencehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43821259Not every startup can afford to burn cash for growth. Some apps have a high enough LTV - the total amount they earn on average per user - that they can justify paid ads, influencer partnerships, or blitzing CPC channels. But if you're building something free (or freemium) where the monetization strategy only works at scale (like most consumer apps) those channels just aren't viable early on. Your CAC needs to basically be $0.So what do you do?You work your butt off.I call this method hustling up users, and here’s how it works:- Go to where your users hang out (Reddit, Discords, Twitter, forums, wherever). - Search for people actively expressing the problem you solve - take the time to find people literally expressing the exact need you service. You’re looking to provide genuine value here, not spam people, so this step is super important. - Reach out directly - something short, personalized, and most of all non-salesy that expresses your understanding of their problem. - Ask them to try

Design a business model for an algorithmically free content consumption platformhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42912365So I’ve been thinking more about this idea of an algorithmically free content consumption platform.Consider this,Today, big tech companies are too fixated on algorithmically driven [everything]. Which has its limits. For instance, I remember way back in the good old days there was this AI themed YouTube channel based on crappy TTS synthesis which kinda worked, but then YouTube cracked down on TTS (at least the blatantly obvious ones), forcing this channel to move to a more realistic voice that kinda killed the whole theme of the channel.I suspect this would have demonetized or completely de-platformed Stephen hawking as well in some alternate universe where he became a YouTuber. While on the opposite side of the spectrum, one can make an argument that online platforms are failing to filter out undesirable, low quality and low effort content, among other things. In a way it’s like an arms race, and at a fundamental level, with regard to algorithmically driven content recommendation and mod

Ask HN: Should we start a discussion about the DSA?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41235201Under the Digital Services Act platforms are forced to comply with removal requests for content which is deemed in violation of the regulation.According to the "DSA Transparency Database"[1], approximately 1.2 million pieces of content are removed daily (at least in terms of their visibility inside the EU) because they fall into the category of "Illegal or harmful speech", the reason being "online services are being misused by manipulative algorithmic systems to amplify the spread of disinformation"[2].Ironically, algorithms are heavily used to perform automated decision-making on the type of content that is being removed. Platforms are subject to heavy fines for not complying (so it's better to remove more stuff than otherwise), and there's no transparency in the process. What's the content that is actually removed? A couple of people I occasionally watch on YouTube have had their content removed and/or their channel demonetized under the DSA for completely fine content (expressing opi

Show HN: Voyage – Toolbox of otherwise expensive SaaS marketing toolshttps://www.withvoyage.com/Voyage is a bunch of marketing tools for SaaS in one platform. We're betting on three things:1. Many marketing tools don't offer free tiers. Think Optimizely, 6sense, Mutiny, Typeform, Qualified, Marketo, Drift, etc. A lot of these have minimum contract sizes of 5 figures. Voyage is completely free right now (haven't shipped monetization yet) and will always be usage-based + free tier.2. Having these tools in one place compounds. We offer global themes for all of the user-facing marketing assets, which means you won't have to manage a brand theme for each of Wistia, Drift, etc. We also can use the data from one tool to modify another. Ex: personalize the header of the pricing page based on whether a visitor went through the video on your splash page.3. We can outship most engineering teams in the long term. It's difficult for mar-tech companies to attract/retain talent since they're GTM-first, not eng-first. We're building an eng-first mar-tech company, getting into teams early with a g

Show HN: Traveler's currency conversion based on location (iOS)https://www.smartercurrency.appHey! I made (yet another) currency conversion app. It has some extra features I find useful for my traveling.Currently it's iOS only (I've ended up going with SwiftUI and focusing on Apple's eco-system, mostly because their locale API was great with currencies and their reverse geolocation is simple and reliable)Features: - I uses device locale to try and set your "home" currency. - When abroad (home != foreign), it uses location to set the "foreign" currency.- Tax: Living outside of north-america, I find "tax exclusive" tricky. So, it provides rough estimation of sale taxes based on your location. (I expect this feature to require more tweaking in the US with counties name might differ between geolocation services and my json database)- Tipping: based on many sources I've composed a simplified global tipping customs json. I guess it's a mixed bag but it should be in the ballpark for the most common scenarios (dining, taxing, staying).Monetization: - It's free with banner ads on curren

Help HN: Adwords Accounts Closed by Googlehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38438849Hey HN. Posting this here in the hope that someone who can help sees this. This is a pretty long post detailing my experience, but TL;DR is I have 2 adwords accounts closed for 2 businesses. One that was dormant for 5-7 years (with ZERO use since then) and another one I opened for another of my companies (linked to my Youtube channel). I cannot appeal as I get a canned response back "can't take any further actions" due to me apparently entering in details incorrectly.--- I had to cut it a bit shorter ---In the first quarter of 2023 my Youtube channel began to approach the minimums for monetization after a few live streams.I logged into my adwords account #1 and saw my details were slightly dated, I updated the banking details and company address as we had recently moved to a busines center and we prefer a different bank to the one originally used. The adwords account is maybe 15+ years old and HAS NOT been used in at least 7 years or so.I was prompted regarding reactivating the account

Ask HN: Feeling disillusioned. Am I overly moralizing Tech?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37212733Tech Twitter is ablaze with hype around a new crypto app that lets you monetize relationships. Much of the excitement by builders & VCs explicitly hand-waves away the obvious and self-admitted ponzinomics for the sake of social experimentation.Watching this play out has peaked my long emerging disillusionment with Tech. When billions are poured into subsidizing the engineering of addiction under the guise of growth, when VR is being pushed as a way to unironically help us connect more immersively, when the crypto intelligentsia continues to wantonly deploy financial mechanisms that almost universally enrich insiders under the guise of economic liberation, and everyone seems obsessed with joining the club at all costs… how are you meant to remain hopeful for tech’s societal impact?Or am I just overly moralizing this?

Show HN: PixelForge – Verticalize YouTube videos with AI for TikTok, Reelshttps://pixelforge.artHi everyone!PixelForge aims at easily convert horizontal videos into vertical videos without having to go through the tedious process of video editing again.Among the different possibilities, I really wanted PixelForge to be efficient in the following areas:- Developing your audience on YouTube- Growing your audience on other platforms- Reduce the financial impact of content repost in other/same platforms- Getting more value out of your horizontal videos.>> So what's the problem? Why this project ?As a former content creator on YouTube (+50k subs & ~5M views), I've seen the platform evolve and I've witnessed several problems over the years. One of the best ways to succeed on YouTube today is to Shorts, which they are known to have have a wider reach. However, this can be a big challenge when your content is mainly horizontal. In addition, many creators have their content stolen and republished on platforms like TikTok and Reels for monetization purposes, resulting in a significant loss o
