Ask HN: Software- Better to focus on or complement with?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13858596From your experience, what advantages/disadvantages are there to: 1) Majoring in electrical engineering and physics, minoring in software development 2) Majoring in software engineering, minoring in electrically engineering and physicsContext: I'm a first year engineering student and would like to pick either Software Engineering (electrical engineering with computer science) or Engineering Physics (electrical engineering with physics). I already have a couple years experience programming, really enjoy it, and is why I went into the program. But, I've also really enjoyed physics and math classes and they've given me a strong desire to learn more about physics. Intuitively, I think that having a strong physics background opens the door to more problems I could solve with software. However, I don't want to to discount the value of studying software engineering. I don't have the experience to see what kind of walls and limitations each choice offers. What have you seen?

Ask HN: Mentor/Advisor for post-revenue EdTech Company?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13793416Hello,EdTech is a wonky industry! Many downsides... but rewarding (social + profit) if you can carve out a foothold and grow your installed base. We're a small, bootstrapped, EdTech company in a niche space (think desktop application for a humanities field) that's looking for mentorship from an experienced EdTech veteran (either on the tech or business side). We've grown annual revenue to ~$600-700K (~$400K of that is ARR) across a variety of accounts: K-12, Universities, large publics, small privates, etc.Product engagement and customer satisfaction is great; we have low churn at an expensive price point + high conversion rates on pilot trials, but we're struggling to level up and grow to the next stage (which we define as $1MM+ ARR or an installed base across 500-1000 schools). There seems to be many older/experienced operators in the B2B and B2C spaces. Finding mentors in EdTech has been difficult for us.If you have a background in EdTech and are interested in mentoring a small, but h

It's taboo to plug your startup or idea. Why?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13733654Since starting my own business (I own a drone company) it seems taboo to be honest about plugging what I have to sell. When you start a small business and have no budget for ads you need free ways to get your idea/website out there. If you built an indie game, app, Have a prototype, have a youtube channel etc and want to spread the work but you recieve nothing but hate online it can be a disaster. I thought this was a problem. So I started Runway16.us its a place to plug your idea and find early adopters looking for new products & websites to spend money on. Runway16 is not my business or source of income. I just put it together to help other people post their ideas, startups, and not feel guilty about it. Just to prove I'm real my name is Daniel and I own DroneVideoJunkie.com. If you have any recommendations for Runway16.us or just want to plug your idea I wouldn't mind constructive feedback or interesting content.

Lessons learnt from my failure. Launched my product one week agohttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13197226One week back i released my product .Voblet - A better way to send, organize and share links.Website : https://voblet.comExplainer video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0q6ZiiC2DoI worked on this for almost 10 months.I expected it to be a big hit and thought people will start using it when they see the video. But it didn't happen. I failed to gather interest, these are some of the lessons learnt.1) Explain your product in one interesting lineWhen you post about your product in producthunt, reddit, hackernews, twitter etc. You should be able to get people interest with just your one line.No body has time to read your description and watch explainer video. When someone asks about your product and you failed to get his attention in one sentence.I think you should revisit your product and make it better and strong in at least one aspect.2) Have at least one big differentiating featureIf you have a competing product which is already popular.Doing small improvements will not make users ins

Crytek haven't paid their employees in Bulgaria in 3 monthshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13140938Crytek haven't paid their employees in Bulgaria in 3 months and all workers in that office are currently owed 3 full salaries. The company is not looking to pay these salaries any time soon and have spent the last few months lying about the availability of this money in order to keep as many employees as possible. The Yerli brothers (Avni, Cevat and Faruk) are now looking at the second delay in the last 6 months (after finishing up a delay of 2 months just before the current one) and the third payment delay in the last two years. The former director of the Sofia studio, Vesselin Handjiev, left several months ago and the studio is entirely at the mercy of Crytek Frankfurt's leadership, which has proved to be unsuccessful in stemming the current bleeding for 6 months.Anyone who has an offer or is otherwise considering joining Crytek is advised to steer their ship elsewhere, as the current situation is rumored to apply to all studios within the company, even after the closure and selling of

Ask HN: Buying a business to use as an ad vehiclehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12653717Situation:Let's say you’re a startup that is ready to publicly launch a new web service. You could spend $633k in advertising (print, online banners, search engine placement, etc.) or you could buy a business with a product already inside your target customers.Example Business background:The pre-existing business mentioned above is a decade old with customers like Airbus, John Deere, etc., government agencies, universities, small law offices, small businesses, and soccer moms. Customers spend anywhere from $20 to $20k. One product in particular could be made free and millions of downloads a year would be the end result. This "free" product could be a message proxy for your new web service.Question:What is good way to calculate that buying the above business to use its products, website, and SEO as an ad or awareness engine is better for your brand and message? How would you go about proving that this path (mathematically) is more sound than traditional means?
