I Forgot to Get ExcitedI feel like from day one, LLMs was talked about in relation to how it will change the world, how it's good or bad for business and the environment. But then yesterday, I was out walking with the dog, and it hit me how freaking cool this technology is.I don't want to talk about where I am on the spectrum between booster and denier. I'm so sick and tired of hearing about it, and it doesn't matter in this context.I spent the first 8 years of my career trying to make the computer understand reality through images - scanning receipts, finding defects on wind turbine blades, and other niche-but-important things. The amount of work it took to just read a receipt and get the text somewhat right.. It was insane. It was really fun work, but it was so hard to make the real world fit into boxes.I feel like I completely missed being excited about LLMs - instead I got dragged into discussions about what it means. And it's not because I've lost the ability to care; I can get excited about a new hashi

Show HN: I made a cute weight tracking app where you can raise a petMy girlfriend hated all the weight tracking apps out there because they felt really analytical and cold. So I figured I'd make a cute gamified weight tracker for her! Introducing Wooby! You can choose one of four pets to raise, and log your behaviors and watch your pet get happier. It gives you motivational messages as you log your weight and habits, and you can unlock furniture and decorate your pet's home as well. You can even play with your pet. It's totally free right now and we don't collect any data either so give it a try!

Show HN: I replaced a $120k bowling center system with $1,600 in ESP32sI might be the only SRE on Earth with his own bowling center. It's a more in-depth gig than you'd think. My family and I bought an abandoned 8-lane bowling center in the rural mid-west. In our small town there weren't many recreation options for families. You've heard of a food desert? This is an R&R desert. It had been abandoned for a good reason. The roof leaks, the electrical system was constantly surging, and my 70-year-old bowling equipment (still) doesn't work perfectly. The system that keeps your score is particularly interesting to me. It's the thing you watch during your game, but it fades into the background beyond that. Turns out these things are really cool, but absurdly expensive.Ours was installed in 2008 and cost six figures. It's calculating ball speed and trajectory, camera-based pin detection (object detection and trig, on ICs!), runs the fouling, the animations, the pinsetting machine and ball return. Very cool stuff for its age. From the business perspective, my facili

Show HN: Regularly, hand-picked daily logic and number puzzles, no adsHi HN. I wanted to present to you Regularly (https://regularly.co), a daily logic/math puzzle website I made to scratch my own itch: can we have a fun and engaging puzzle app that doesn't eventually devolve into an iap blockaded mess? For background, a few years ago I released my first daily puzzle (Countable), which I made for my then-girlfriend (now wife) and me to play over morning coffee. One marriage and four games later, the full Regularly set was born: with no ads, no sign-up, no iaps. It spread by word of mouth and a few hundred people now play each day.Our business model is simple: the daily puzzles will always be free (without ads). At some point I may charge a small amount to access and play the back catalogue, but the day's puzzles stay free forever. As with many other websites, a fresh puzzle set drops every morning. However, unlike those websites, every puzzle shown is hand-picked rather than whatever we can make, and we really focus on getting the difficulty right. We wa

Ask HN: What percentage do images take up in your computer?Hi HN! Hope your weekend is going great.I spent the last few months building a nice frontend (https://oimg.org | https://github.com/yunho-c/OIMG) to latest-and-greatest image codecs¹, because my computer was always full² and images were taking up a big chunk of it.https://assets.yunhocho.com/images/MacBongPro-Storage.pngI just reached a stopping point for the MVP and published OIMG to Microsoft Store and App Store. And before posting about it, I came to seriously question how many people will actually find it useful... because I don't want to waste their time showing something they won't find useful. So the question is: how much do images take up in your PC, either in percentage or absolute size?¹ like jpegli, oxipng, libjxl, etc—that can generally shave 30~50% off of typical PNGs and JPGs either losslessly or with visually imperceptible differences, respectively² despite offloading a lot of images and files to the cloud regularly. Apple's storage pricing really doesn't help hereAlso, i

Show HN: Axiom toolkit – Make your ideas precise enough to be proven wrongIt's our mission to make logic mainstream. As a first step on this journey, we've released a free AI toolkit for turning a belief, question, or argument into formal logic using our novel "logic for discourse" built on top of Lean 4.For a 5-minute intro and walkthrough, check out the video on the landing page: https://axiomreason.com/#walk-throughTo try it yourself, install the toolkit (AI skills, Lean library, and Axiom CLI) here: https://axiomreason.com/install/toolkitIt works best if you pick something you truly care about. An important belief you have, an argument for a position you hold, a question you really want answered. This process of transforming natural language into formal logic gives the AI the scaffold it needs to effectively identify gaps in your thinking, edge cases, equivocation, etc.The eventual goal is to create an active social platform where all communication is in formal logic. We've got a lot of work ahead to make such a thing approachable for a general audience.

Show HN: Turn a Suno song into a music video with beat-synced auto-editingI make songs with Suno, but turning them into videos used to take me days of editing, so I built a tool to automate the whole process. You just paste a Suno or FlowMusic link—or upload your own audio—and add a photo of the singer. The tool analyzes the song’s beat and structure, plans out the shots, generates the visuals, turns them into video clips, and lip-syncs the singing scenes. It then cuts everything into short 1–3 second shots that match the beat.Editing was definitely the hardest part. A 10-second AI-generated clip is rarely usable from start to finish, so the tool picks out the best moments, slices them up, and reuses them throughout the video. It currently takes a few minutes to make a video, the maximum resolution is 720p, and crowd scenes can still look a little strange. The free credits are enough to make one full video, and you don’t need a credit card. I’d really appreciate feedback on the editing—that’s the part I’m still least confident about.

Show HN: Fitbod Meets DuolingoHi all! Ricardo, Solo builder of Cooltivo here. When I first started working out, I will say that something that really got me into the habit was fitbod, the app that picks your workouts for you. This worked fine for the first year or so, but once I had a mild injury and stopped going to the gym for a couple months, It was so hard to get back into the habit. Fitbod looked as a white canvas again and I lost motivation to take it back... That's where I started working on Cooltivo, a fitness app that combines the best of Duolingo and Fitbod. The mechanic: Töllin, an animated tree coach inspired by the Tree of Tule from Oaxaca, Mexico, builds your program around your equipment, schedule injuries and preferences. After 3 workouts you're assigned a plant/mushroom friend whose body transforms based on your consistency — train and it gets stronger, skip a month and it becomes jabba the hutt. But as soon as you start working out, your character builds up a lot faster, similar as how humans do. O

Show HN: Poems, an .ISO PuzzleHere a small puzzle for you to enjoy. In this file, there are 16 short poems to be found. Joy is had not by grepping or wanton scanning, but by careful parsing, and attention to detail. Such will be rewarded by small joys of wonder. Over the past few days I’ve been building up this little file format hacking puzzle. It’s a bit niche, but I hope the sort of people who’re into this kind of thing might really enjoy it, so that’s why I’m sharing it here.(Yes, the Wii has no HTTPS yet, I’ve been busy building silly things )

Show HN: Open-source verification and tuning layer for self-hosted LLMsHi HN,Thomas here, I'm a Machine Learning, and I've been deploying models in prod for the last 5 years and decided it was time to open-source some of my learnings! In Coloma you'll find my vLLM tuner, I use it to ensure models don't OOM at runtime, and are optimized for the metric that matters the most for that deployment: low per-user latency vs maximum system throughput. To make it easier the dashboard ships with an estimator of the performance expected at runtime depending on the parameters picked.I've also started to add my outputs verification system that triggers when the GPUs are idling, so that at runtime the predictions can run fast, and get flagged later on for continuous improvement.Really looking forward to see if it that can help someone!

Show HN: Da Ultimate Rap Battle: 564 dope-ass rap songs, rankedHey HN, this is a world cup-style tournament for over 500 rap songs I've saved in my liked songs in Spotify over the years. It was really fun to work on!Lots of good stuff from NWA, Jadakiss, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Big Pun, Eminem, Nas, and more.Tournaments are a good way to separate the wheat from the chaff in any high-dimensional space like music, and it's really fun to have no idea which track's actually gonna take the top spot until it's all over.As a mostly-backend/data developer for the past decade, it was my first real foray into pixel-perfect frontend and was completed last year before the AIs conquered the territory. Flexbox is fairly intuitive and frontend is quite satisfying!Structure was a series of 4-track group rounds (top 2 advance) followed by a 128-track head-to-head bracket.Knockout round: 564 -> 512 tracksSquad Round 1: 512 -> 256 tracksSquad Round 2: 256 -> 128 tracksBracket Round: 128 tracks -> 1 winnerClicking on any track tees up a preview in the embedded Spotify mini

Ask HN: Is the ngrok AI gateway for real? What are your thoughts on the ngrok AI gateway?I just found out about it and the first impression I got was this is basically a LiteLLM wrapper, a gateway/translation layer for OpenAI requests and a dashboard. Is this an oversimplification of what that product is or not really? To me, it feels like they just needed an "AI" product to say that ngrok also does AI stuff too!

Show HN: OSS Pi Agent for Slack and LinearWe've been using a now-discontinued version of pi-mom from the pi monorepo for a few months now. Digby is a slackbot which you can also assign Linear issues to. It has a private (Sign In with Slack, locked to your team) wiki and can serve raw assets. It's pi, so it's self-modifying and self-improving.This isn't enterprise-grade, super secure stuff, but really a pi session anyone can use and one can works really well. Out of the box it deploys (and redeploys itself when PRs merge) itself to AWS on a small container. Runs on Claude Sonnet on Bedrock, but can use any Bedrock model easily. If you give it a Github token it'll open PRs to your codebase on its own behalf (or whoever owns the token -- very much advise you give it its own account). It can sign you into MCPs, and open its own browsers using Browser Use. Most importantly, it's very easy to fork and extend and make your own. We've been slowly improving a lot of the sharp edges the original pi-mom came with, to the point it's usable

Ask HN: I feel like I've lost my identity due to AII am a self taught software developer. I was previously an electrical engineer. For the past 10 years I’ve spent almost all my spare time reading and learning and lifting weights - software, electrical engineering, reading, and creating what I thought were novel projects - mostly in the software domain. For the longest time I’ve only been interested in ideas that haven’t really been done before, maybe that’s because I have adhd? But lots of the ideas I pursue and build are relatively novel or unique in some way, not derivative.Anyway, then LLMs happened. Now any idiot can just ask an AI for ideas or to think for them, or to build software for them in a single shot.Initially I was really excited by LLMs because I thought great, something to bounce ideas off. Now LLMs have far surpassed any idea I could possibly have. Not only that, but I’m a builder and I have always built things and launched projects to the world. Now my projects are drowning in a sea of noise. I’m contributing to the no

Learn by BuildingAs long as we don't have AGI or superintelligence, we still need good software engineers. And even if we do reach AGI and coding is "solved," are we really supposed to just trust the generated code?Outsourcing our cognitive thinking and understanding isn't the way to advance as humans, nor is it the way to stay ahead of AI. If we give that up, how do we limit AI slop? And how would we even pull the plug, if it came to that?Understanding computer science concepts and developing good software engineering practices is still very much in demand, even as most students and engineers seem to be letting their coding and algorithmic reasoning skills atrophy.Time to build those back up, in a fun and engaging way. If AI is good for one thing here, it's helping us learn, not thinking for us.That's why we built a Claude skill that teaches computer science concepts by having Claude guide you through implementing their core components from scratch. It's open source and still early, so it's very much
